Over the weekend I was going through my Canadian Plus file getting ready to archive everything in preparation for the mileage transfer to Aeroplan. I came across an award schedule dating back to 1989 with some absolutely incredible awards. 2 economy tickets to South America for 68,000 miles; 4 business class tickets in North America for 82,000; 2 business class tickets to Europe for 110,000 (including space on BA and KLM); 2 first class tickets to any CP or KLM destination for 140,000; 4 business class tickets to any CP destination or 2 RTW business class tickets on CP and/or BA for 225,000. And all of these awards included a hotel and a car award to boot!
This brought back memories of my first trips to Chile and Argentina - I had redeemed for two tickets to South America and upraded to business for an extra 10,000 miles per ticket (i.e. two business class tickets for 88,000 miles! Wow!!). It also reminded me that CP's reward schedule was far superior to Aeroplan's and that I wished my flying patterns would have favoured CP instead of AC. I recall back then (anyone have an old Aeroplan reward chart?) the destinations on Aeroplan were quite limited, you couldn't even fly to South America or the South Pacific! Anyone also remember CP's promotion where, on flying certaining number of domestic flights, you'd qualify for two tickets to any destination for $99 each? I went to Rio with a buddy of mine and can still remember the giddy feeling that came from the scorching heat of Ipanema in April along with marvelling at being able to get there for the price of a train ride between Ottawa and Toronto! Thanks Canadian Plus, you're a big part of the reason I've become a mileage nut.
