I will be flying CP to HNL this evening and am wondering if there is US customs and immigration in terminal 1? I would guess not since this is the only US flight from this terminal.

Thanks in advance.

The flight is meant for connections onto Sydney and Auckland so you would have to clear U.S. immigration and customs in Honolulu. It works great for those who are headed to the S. Pacific. The flights from YVR don't preclear for that reason either.

Actually, terenz, not quite.

Flights to Hawaii are not precleared because of the more stringent agricultural inspections which are required for passengers arriving in Hawaii.

It would be too expensive to put Agriculture inspectors at the PFI stations for the number of flights that are involved, so they don't bother preclearing them at all.

While CP and AC sceduled flights do connect with South pacific services, there are also substantial numbers of passengers on those (and on charter flights) that are destined to Hawaii.

I wouldn't think Hawaiian agriculture clearance would be that big a deal as all CONUS (continental U.S.) pax would have to go through it anyway. They have similar programs in Tasmania (although it's limited to warnings, quarantine drop off bins, and presence of inspectors).

Agreed that most Canadians do stop at Hawaii but havign pre-clear in Canada would be a hassle for those continuing on to the S. Pacific.

From the airline's perspective, why subject the aircraft and passengers to two inspections, when you can do only one.

Remember, the airline pays for each passenger that is cleared at a PFI. They then pay for each passenger who goes through Agricultural clearance in Hawaii. However, I suspect that the Ag inspection is included in the inspection fee if the passengers are cleared at HNL, but not if they are cleared at a PFI.

So, a lower marginal cost to pass on to the consumer.
