From employee email, some news of interest to some FF's:

DID SOMEONE SAY “GESCHAFTSFREUND”?
In case you’re wondering, that’s German for “business friend”, and
we’re referring to Lufthansa. Starting July 1, Canadian Plus members
can earn and redeem CPlus points on all LH operated services. All
points earned on LH count towards membership tier status in CPlus.
Executive Platinum and Gold members can access Lufthansa business
class lounges, as part of the STAR Alliance access policy for
members. CDN will become a partner in Lufthansa's Miles and More
program August 1.

EXPRESS CHECK-IN NOW IN YVR
Air Canada has installed six Express Check-in kiosks in the domestic
departure area at YVR, along with a special baggage drop-off
counter. Over the summer, at least six more kiosks will be opened in
the same area. Kiosks are in place for Air Canada customers in
Ottawa, Toronto and Dorval. AC reports that 5,400 customers use the
kiosks in those three cities on a typical business day. The kiosks
complement existing Check-in services and help reduce wait times
during busy periods.

That's all for today!

Thanks Fly Girl!

It starts to look more and more "Star Alliance". Lufthansa is a big player in *A and it is excellent news for us. I am wondering why they do this airline by airline instead of announcing a full integration with *A.

Perhaps it is related with the different pull-out dates from other previous OW partner

Getting into an airline Alliance is a bit like getting admitted to the Group of 7, NATO, the EEC, the Organization of American States, etc. It requires official agreement by all members meeting at their annual congress, plus the other forms bi-lateral and multi-lateral negotiations. Plus, as you point out, extracting yourself from previous Alliance arrangements. (A bit like Poland or the Czech republic wishing to join NATO but having to shake off all their Soviet Block alliances. They make bi-laterial agreements, etc. building up to the final acceptance and initiation into the allaince.) So it is with Canadian, half-sister of Air Canada right now.

And think of that poor man down in the paint shop. If he gets another logo to put on those airplanes, he may "go postal"! So perhaps STAR is just holding off until the final merger takes place and CP is fully integrated into AC, and no new logos have to be applied to the sides of their airplanes. Or onto their brochures and other materials, only to be removed when CP finally does fold its tent and the goose is gone forever.

In the meantime, it is bi-laterial agreements carrier-by-carrier.

Thanks for the news, A Flygirl.

Thanks for the info Flygirl.

If only they gave us a bit more notice! I've just booked a pair of tickets to Cairo for July 3 on BA - 7500 miles down the drain. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/mad.gif
