I currently have a Delta Skymiles Platinum card and would like to switch to a different Amex card, maybe Starwood, or another that would let me earn MR points. Can I do this without canceling my account, so that I can keep my long credit history with American Express?

My dad was able to do this about 1-1/2 years back, I would imagine that you can still do it.

You can convert from one AMEX Credit Card to another AMEX Credit card, but not from credit card to charge card. So you can convert your Delta CC to a Starwood CC, but not to any MR point earning charge card. If the Blue CC also earn MR points, I suppose you could convert to that.

Apply for a new card and get a bonus. Then cancel the "old" card (with remark "request of cardholder..".
You don't loose your "long credit history with American Express"! @:-)

I applied for the Starwood card, and while I was activating it, the lady asked me if I want to cancel my old & transfer my old AE's credit line to *wood, I said yes.
Ill agree with what USAFAN wrote. If the new card you want doesnt give any type of a bonus for signing up for it then you can keep the old # and get a new type of card.
If however you want the bonus then you'll need to get a brand new acct #.
Yrs ago I switched my DL Amex to a SPG one, at the time there wasnt a bonus for signng up only for the 1st 10 stays at a SPG prop. When I was sent a preapproved DL appl I got the card again but not the 15,000 miles Only 5,000. I called up and was told that since my SPG # was my old DL# the 15,000 doesnt apply as I had needed to close out that # altogether and just not switch to a different Amex card with the same #. (I did apply for the Biz card and got the 10,000 miles that way to make up the 15,000, but I should have gotten 25 in total and not 15). So if you use the Amex # all over the place (re; on your profiles for airlines, hotels, car rentals, and in online profiles for shopping in different shopping charts you'll have to go in and change all of them, is it worth it? thats a personal issue some might say yes others no, it'll also depend on what your bonus is and what it will be worth to you.
You can - but only from certain products to certain other products. Some of them reside on different systems, apparently, and they don't have the ability to change your card between the two.

Make sure to transfer your credit line from the old card to the new one
