Trip Report BNE-CNS J

I’ve been an active member of FlyerTalk for about 1 month now and an avid flyer for years but have not had the chance to post a trip report. I have always been fascinated in other people’s flying experiences so I’ve decided to post my first report. I hope I have included everything that is supposed to be here and if I haven’t, could some of the more experienced flyers correct me. Regards.

So, I finally finished university for the year and going back home to Cairns on QF786 departing at 7:25pm. I arrive at the airport at 5:45pm, struggling with the 6 pieces of luggage (including exercise equipment) that I am bringing up for the three month break, somewhat paranoid that I was going to pay for excess luggage although in the past Qantas have been very lenient with the amount one can bring on a flight. Waited for about 3 minutes until Daniel, one of the two check-in agents was free. Handing over my Qantas Club card, I was relieved that when I replied to the “How many bags will you be checking in today, sir?” question, he didn’t seem to care about the excess and processed all my bags with no sweat. Swift but very stale service (didn’t smile once), I collected my boarding card, pleased to see I was allocated 1F and made my way through security, up the escalators, and turned immediately left straight towards the QP lounge to indulge in some pre boarding beverages.

QP at 6:00pm was fairly quiet for a Saturday night. Found a place near the buffet and was surprised to see only Spinach and Feta pastries as the hot food, no sausage rolls or pies. I was also happy to see that Qantas decided that two public use computers in the lounge were not enough and have installed about 6 brand new computers and printers, but still no Broadband internet, what is up with that?!?! Anyways, I relaxed for a while until my flight was called for boarding at 7:05pm through Gate 18.

QF786
Brisbane – Cairns
SDT: 7:25pm
Seat: 1F
Seq. 78
Aircraft: 737-800

Boarded and was greeted by a lovely lady by the name of Gabrielle who happened to be the CSA. Got comfortable in my Millenium seat next to a lady reading a book, which I later got to know as Ms Zellman. Was offered a pre take off juice or water by Scott. I took the juice, and am still deciding whether it was OJ or mango and OJ?? Who knows? The captain was Alan Kushan (Cushan, Cuchan, Cushion??) and first officer was Wayne.

Push back was at 7:24pm where I was offered a newspaper and happily accepted to the Fin Review. Safety demo (with a very loud PA system) at 7:26pm. Take off at 7:34pm which was quite rough and there was turbulence for 5 minutes as we ascended into a small storm. As we levelled off, the Captain came on the PA to greet everyone and give the flight details. Pre dinner drinks were offered at this time and I asked for a white wine, which turned out to be a glass of Mount Pleasant Chardonnay, and as the name suggests, was quite pleasant.

There were only 8 pax out of the 12 capacity in the Business class cabin and as I was sitting in row 1, I was served quickly. Thanks Gab!! Dinner service commenced at 8:15pm and was a choice between Poached Chicken Salad or Beef Stir Fry. I chose the Beef. Not a bad choice, the meal was slightly overcooked by about 5-10 mins as the rice at the top was dry and hard. Other than that, the meal was quite enjoyable. It was accompanied by a Garden Salad with Herb Vinaigrette, a Bread Roll, and a Paton’s Macadamia Chocolate. I continued with the Mount Pleasant Chardonnay.

As I was eating dinner, I amused myself with the inflight entertainment of ‘Kath and Kim’, and once dinner was cleared at 8:40, sat back with a cup of tea and watched an utterly fascinating and ‘eyes glued to the TV’ (slightly sarcastic) documentary about Papua New Guinea. A Keith Urban music video thing was on after that but looked highly uninteresting.

Continuous offers for drinks etc. were made throughout the flight until we landed in Cairns at 9:36pm and disembarked at 9:46, just on time! Luggage took a while as people were still collecting theirs from QF932 but was one of the first to leave with my 6 bags at 9:58pm!

Overall, it was an enjoyable flight. The trip was comfortable, and the service was very efficient, friendly, and attentive. Once again I have to thank Gabrielle the CSA for being so nice. I am impressed with Qantas’ premium product and the service it provides to its high-paying customers.

So there it is, my first trip report. I hope you enjoyed it. Please make some suggestions if need be. :)

Good report. Your meal choices were the same I had on a ADL-SYD lunch flight earlier in the month. I also chose the beef and enjoyed it.

A great report - Qantas service has improved recently - unlike its Frequent Flyer Program.
