Well it looks like the new website is near. I don't know if anyone else on FT got the e-mail, but I am happy to take proxy votes and suggestions for the focus session that I plan to attend.

Note that it is targeted.

Dear NeoOfTheCRS
Dividend Miles #: XXXXXXX

We’re in the process of redesigning usairways.com to make your online interaction easier including enhanced functionality. As we proceed, we’d like customers to view our progress and provide valuable input in a series of one-on-one meetings.
Some of the proposed improvements to usairways.com are:
• New design and functionality
• Multiple shopping methods by price and schedule
• Simpler lowest fare search

We invite you to share your feedback with us at one of our next sessions on December 8th, 9th or 10th at US Airways headquarters. Each meeting will involve a review of the usairways.com prototype and last up to an hour. Our headquarters building is located at 2345 Crystal Drive in Arlington, Virginia.

If you would like to participate, respond by November 30th to XXXXXXX@usairways.com with your name, Dividend Miles account number, contact information, and preferred date and time. We’ll contact you by December 2nd to confirm your attendance. On the day of your session, you’ll receive $75 as token of our appreciation and validated parking in our garage.

We are interested in your opinion, and therefore only you may accept this invitation, and only you may participate in the session (valid photo identification will be required and checked). In order to receive the $75 payment, participants must arrive on time and stay for the entire one-hour session. Due to the highly sensitive nature of the subject matter, you will be required to sign a confidentialy agreement.

We hope you can join us in December. If you can’t attend this time but would like to participate in 2005, please let us know via e-mail. We look forward to improving usairways.com and making it your premier one-stop travel site.

Thank you for your support of US Airways,

John Reistrup
Director, Dividend Miles

I wonder if they'll ever contact any of the RF people who volunteered?

Heck, I'd almost pay them for a slot at such a session (I said almost)

Of course, like most of their best customers, I happen to be flying that week. They might want to think about doing some weekend sessions -- or maybe setting up some sessions in conference rooms at The Club where they can actually find their best customers.

There's something about having your parking validated that just doesn't seem right when we're talking about an airline web-site -- I'd have expected something more along the lines of a TA upgrade certificate or 10,000 bonus (tier) miles or something neat like that

I signed up at RF for this too. I'd be happy to do it; too bad it's targeted.

What is Debra Thompsons E mail address. I live right around the corner from Crystal City. I could just walk in.

I'm going to give e-commerce the benefit of the doubt here. I believe Neo lives in the DC area so it is possible they are contacting those who live close. It is also possible that they do not believe that many who live outside of the area would be wiling to make the trip to CCY at our on expense. Hopefully all who volunteered at the RF will get the opportunity to contribute to the project. I believe management now understands that many members of FFOCUS are willing to give our time and spend our own money working with US to see this airline succeed.

In the FWIW, department I received a personal phone call last spring and was extended an invitation to come and review the web site. I couldn't go because of a little conflict called "market". I'm looking forward to another opportunity as well.

And then we could do Krispy Kreme afterwards :) ....if only I was going to be in town. But alas, I will be away all that week.

Thank you for that PM. If they allow me to attend. I am not going to accept the 75 dollars. They need every cent to get them through this winter. I would just be appreciative just getting to make suggestions on the new website and it's functionality. After all in the Navy I am an IT so it would be good to have some extra technical help there.

Ok, fine. Benefit of the doubt given. They probably mean well.

Now on to the positive suggestions for improving their review process:

1) Don't make the customer come to you -- go to the customer.

(Hint: when you're an airline your customers can often be found in airports. I know where to find several that have hordes of US Airways travelers on a pretty regular basis -- if you need directions send me a PM.)

2) Your customers tend to travel a lot -- they're going to need a bit of variety in meeting times.

I think they need special equipment to conduct a proper web usability session (recording equipment, wired secondary viewing room for closed capture in real time, PCs, etc). At least this is my experience with the ones I have participated in. I am even surprised that USAirways has this equipment at their headquarter. The logistics of trying to get this into DCA, particularly, if they are leasing, would be a nightmare. I doubt if the airports have the type of technical room set up required.

I'll buy you a beer if this is a constraint for US Airways.

I wonder if they might not be sending out the invite more randomly... a self-selected group of frequent flyers may not have all the diversity one would look for in a focus group. Not to say that the feedback of FT'ers should be discounted, but rather that they might want to have a more random sample to include people with less familiarity with commercial flying.

Additionally if I was an IT manager I'd be scared of being in a focus group where the attendees knew more about the company's fare structure than I did...
