I'll be in Samui and Phangan for about two weeks in March. Planning to spend time in BKK on my way home. How many days should I budget? Is 2-3 days sufficient?

After being in Samui...2 or 3 will be all you can handle. :) If you just want to hit the some of the sights in BKK and maybe hit a bit of the night life then 2 or 3 should be fine. For me, more time in Samui would rank higher than more time in BKK. You will enjoy both for sure but they are for sure different.

If you don't mind seeing only the main sites and being totally exhausted at the end of the day, 2-3 days should be enough. But then I would suggest doing BKK first.
Otherwise, I would say 4-5 days. I was there for 4 nights which was a good start but I'm already planning to return to see the rest (and do some more shopping :D ).

Shopping??!! Do tell....what and where? I can certainly add on days for good shopping.

ChactuChak weekend market. You can find some great thigns for the home. Alot of stuff that normally costs an arm and a leg.

There's also a night market just down Telegraph (or is it Wireless?) road? At any rate, some 10-12 minutes walk from the Conrad (same side of the street) away from Sukhumvit Road.

Also don't forget the market near the World Trade Centre shopping arcade. It's north along the road that intersects with Sukhumvit near where the 2 Skytrain lines merge. Next to some hotel and essentially a rat's den.

That night market is Lumpini Night Bazzar at Suam Lum. Enter off of Wireless Road. Tons of shops and a nice beer garden with live music too.

Looks like more time for shopping should definitely be allotted...... :) .
