I have a school loan with 8.25% that I'd like to do a balance transfer to a credit card.

Got an offer from BofA for 0% until october of next year. But of course I'd like to find a card that has some bonus miles for signing up preferrably American or Starwood. Anyone know of any?

Thanks

My AA Citibank card recently had a 1.99% offer with no transfer fees.

As a new customer, I have no idea if they'd give you the same offer. Also, sometimes the big bonuses are tied to "first purchase" - which means you might need to open the account, make 1 purchase, pay it off, and then do the transfer.

For AA and SPG I've never seen an offer where the transfer money earned miles.

I have seen 0% transfers + miles earned on the transfer itself with YX. Cap of $5k or $10k, I think. Annual fee is $69 or $79, IIRC. Still, if you have a use for YX, it would be a good way to get 10,000-15,000 miles and get paid a few bucks to do it (when you factor in the value of $5,000 or $10,000 of free moolah for 6-9 months). All comes back to that "do you have a use for YX" question...

I'm assaulted by Capital One mailings that routinely get thrown out unlooked at.

This offer '0% fixed APR on transfered balances until May 2006- Capital One GO MILES VISA PLATINUM' has following details:

* earn double miles for first six months of card activation
* transfer up to $30,000
* up to first $5000 of transfer amount counts toward mileage redemption balance
* charge minimum of 1 transaction per month for first 5 months to keep 0% through May 2006
* no annual fee
* NO BALANCE TRANSFER FEE

Some conflicting info from Capital One about if this is a targeted offer or not.
It does not appear on the Capital One website. I'll advise when the dust settles.

You are welcome to try inputting the info Capital One provided me:

I can't believe I would ever be on the Capital One bandwagon....BUT its strictly because of interest rate NOT becaiuse of their mileage scheme.

Yeah...with those terms, you gotta pick one or the other: either go for the max double miles you can get or take the free money. If you do both, the free money ceases to be free money.

The 5 transaction rule simply means that the offer will cost you 1 dollar per month (assuming that's the minimum finance charge). Just remember to put it in your calendar to go buy five Cokes with this card on the correct days. Then put it in your sock drawer until May 06.

Watch out for balance transfer fees! I have been playing the 0% game but noticed that most of the recent offers have balance transfer fees.

I just did a transfer to Discover which had no fee if you apply online. No miles, but I have other cards for that.

Some of my cards that have had maximum $50 balance transfer fees have now increased to $75 maximum. My GM card gives 5% but there is a 3% fee-no maximum stated. I've noticed fewer 0% offers lately, and many have a much shorter time period.

I just opened a new Citi card that offers $50 and no interest until 2006 when you purchase $100 w/in the 1st 3 months. No fees for transfers. I quickly spent my $100 and now I'm going to pay it off and then make my transfer.

It's the best offer I've seen.

Good luck at finding something!

Last I looked, Citibanks's MyPoints credit card will still get you 2,000 MyPoints if you sign up through the MyPoints website, and 3,000 if you got the Bonus Mail for it and sign up through its link. That card offers 0% no fee balance transfers for a year.

I am using this card now for that purpose. It took over a month for the points to post. The transfers are accomplished with an easy phone call to Citibank.

To get the 2,000 points, you have to make a purchase on the card. But you don't want to pay interest on that or any purchase. So wait for the bill for the purchase, then pay it off. Then do balance transfers. Make no more purchases on the card, as all payments to the card will be credited to the 0% balance transfers first, causing interest to be paid on the purchases.

To read about MyPoints, look on the Miles or Money for Clicking page of my website, Free Frequent Flyer Miles (http://www.freefrequentflyermiles.com/index.htm).

Are MyPoints worth anything these days? What can you get with them?

(Pardon my skepticism - I've accumulated too many home-grown points over the years that started promising but were then watered-down to near worthlessness.)

Sure. Check out the Spend Points section of MyPoints. You can convert them to Hilton HHonors points, which can then be converted to miles or used to get a room. Or, probably better, you can use MyPoints to get gift certificates or cards for gasoline or stores from which you probably buy stuff. (I like the Home Depot gift card.) Or you can accumulte a zillion of them and cash them in for a UAL ticket.

I received a similar offer last month (have only had the AA citicard for a year). IIRC the transfer fee was 3% with a $50 max (not bad for large sums).

I don't recall if you got miles for this transfer. However, you will get miles for
any balance transfer that are done in the first 3 months on a NEW account - I picked up an easy 10K miles and the finance charges were minimal as I re-paid them all within a month.

The problem with ALL of these offers that you will not be able to use the card to earn additional miles AND keep the low rate because your payments always go first to pay off the low-rate balances. So you will pay interest on all of your new charges at the exhorbitant regular rates until you have paid off the entire account balance.

Thus, IMO, the balance transfer deals should only be done with accounts that you do not plan to use for anything else, since you won't want to boost the rate by making new purchases.

Got a question regarding miles and balance transfers.....

Say Ive got a balance of 10k on my AA Citibank card. I'd like to do a balance transfer of the entire 10k to a United Bank One card, Will I get 10k miles for the AA card being paid off and 10k miles once I pay off the United card? Thanks.

I won't speak to the United earnings-side of the equation, but if I understand your question, you typically don't get miles for paying a card off. You get miles for charging items to a credit card. If you have 10K to pay off on your AA credit card, I would assume that you have already earned your 10K miles for charging items to your AA card.

For my offer, I got no miles - just the good rate and no fees.

I've been getting a ton of zero-percent direct mail offers from Bank One, but all of them have a $65 fee for the transfer (whether or not the card is also tied to a mileage/points program.)
