American had a similar promotion to celebrate their 20 year anniversary in 2001. It involved generating *SOME* kind of activity from a partner. It could be as simple as a point transfer. The thread grew to over 10 pages with hints and tricks. Some people go the 20K (or was it 25K?) bonus by spending well under $100 and never sitting a plane. Didn't apply to preferred, but did count towards the lifetime status(as all activty in an AA account does). But it was a nice quick way to get a big bonus.

This makes sense, but might the codes for this promo and a challenge clash? My understanding is that challenges are activated by DM staff using similar promo codes. I hope I do not have to one choose one or the other.
I do appreciate them doing this. Maybe this is meant to lure pax from non-AFA carriers (CO, NW, DL, WN, AA, etc...)?

I'm doing a MR to ORF in December and while I don't NEED the extra 2K miles.. assuming I can get the same fares etc, is it worth it?

I'm not sure I agree with the reading of this offer as allowing 40K in preferred between the two years. For those who believe that is what the offer says, what do you think would happen if you flew 2 RTs in '03 and 3 in '04? Do you think you would get 5K in '03 and 9K in '04? I think you would get 5K on '03 and 15K in '04.
I do agree that the fine print quote "Maximum 20,000 bonus miles toward Preferred status can be earned in 2004 and again in 2005." sure does seem like they are saying you could earn 40K, but the details on how they would handle that confuse me.
It does seem like a pretty sweet offer. Given that I'm going to end the year at 86K, I may just have to add something in to go ahead at hit CP now. Anyone have advice on the cheapest RTs in the system?

I think it's very, very clear that it allows 40K miles - "Maximum 20,000 bonus miles toward Preferred status can be earned in 2004 and again in 2005." doesn't leave much room for confusion.
The transition over the year-end is not clear at all. I could see the arguement for either 9k or 15k in '05. But what if you take a 4th flight in '05? I'd bet on the counter re-starting in '05. Actually, I'd bet on "gee, we didn't think of that..."

I'm 100% in agreement. US is rewarding the customers whose loyalty has been called into question (no offense to those of you reading this post who fall into this category), and don't offer the same bennies to the loyal customers who have continued to support this airline through the past few turbulent months.
Yes, this is a great promo for new bookings, and I appreciate the effort, but PLEASE, Barry -- reward good behavior as equally as bad behavior, and make it retroactive.

One interesting tid bit. I had signed up for an envoy bonus some time ago and this in fact had caused me not to get this email. I had thought I might use the envoy bonus but have not been able to do so.
Moral of the story..... Their systems are in fact getting better and they can in fact see who has signed up for which bonus automatically. I guess this means the days of GOM are really over. :D It also means you should only sign up for those bonuses you know you are going to use.
And special thanks to the individual who saw my post here and did some checking behind the scenes. We really do want you guys to succeed and we are behind you all the way. This is truly a good promotion that was needed to fire up the troops. You guys did a nice job on this one.

While I am not a big fan of USAirways miles, I am a big fan of using the shorter security line at USAirways. This year I made United Premier on my United flights and about 10k short of Silver Preferred on my USAirways metal flights. I've been puzzling whether it's worth it to try to get this 10k, but with this new promotion, 3 quick trips would do the trick (a total of 9k bonus preferred miles, along with at least 3k on the actual trips themselves).
I'm thinking of riding up to PHL and doing a PHL-BDL turnaround twice in a weekend, with a drive down to the casinos to hang out with a buddy. $78 bucks R/T a pop. The only fly in my ointment is that I'll be near DC that weekend, and while Philly is a reasonable drive, would rather just fly out of IAD or DCA on a cheapie fare somewhere and keep myself entertained.
Any thoughts/suggestions on cheap fares out of the Wash area for a weekend turnaround? Dream Maps actually shows BDL from WAS for the $78 R/T but that fare has been pulled and is now $122 -- not much more, so I might just fly straight from WAS.. still doing the cost/bennie analysis :)

Jusr to re-confirm...
According to DM service center, this promo is not in any way retroactive. If the tix have been purchased there is no way to apply promo to that reservation. This includes reservations prior to departure. Who knows what the computer will accept or not though.
I also agree that it would be nice if this applied to loyal flyers that have already purchased tickets (sometimes several reservations), but I can understand the purpose of this promo is strictly to encourage new cash flow during desperate times. This will encourage flyers to purchase new tix. For those of us that already have reservations, it's not like we will refrain from making new ones because we feel dissed (for the most part).
Maybe we could kindly petition them to reconsider though? We are loyal sources of revenue when they need us most.
To answer a previous question I posted on this thread (post #38) about whether this promo might clash/ cancel out a challenge promo: the answer is no. According to DMSC the challenge promos can work simultaneously with other codes.

Can't a CP actually who is over 100,000 for the year get 40,000 preferrred out of this for 2005?
1) 20,000 in 2004
2) 20,000 carry over credited to 2005
3) 20,000 for 2005
Unfortunatly I probably will not benefit from this. I must buy from the corporate site and I have vouchers to use for personal flights. If the future was more certain, I would use $$ now and the vouchers later.

2) 20,000 carry over credited to 2005
3) 20,000 for 2005
That's my thinking. Anyone with a different opinion?

I think this is a great promo. I'm not going to chase the 20k this year, but will feel better about taking some discretionary flights earlier if my schedule allows. I don't think they need to grandfather, exempt or otherwise break the rules...the promo is great the way it is now.

Do these bonus miles count purely towards preferred qualification, or are they added to your ordinary mileage balance as well?
I've read the blurb several times, and I can't decide which is the correct interpretation.
It seems very ambiguous...

If they give redeemable miles that count toward status as well, it's a go like hell. ^
If it's only status in play, no way. :td:

Even if it's only status, I still might give it a shot. Could probably make GP again good thru 02/07 by the middle of next year with a couple of extra transcons.
And if US goes away before then, the miles are of no more use than the status is. (In actual fact the status might be more use for getting a match with another airline.)

I know that there are other reasons for flights being all booked up, but any short same-day weekend jaunts from BOS are pretty much booked up in the roach fare category. BOS-PHL is often pretty heavily booked, but I thought a SAT or SUN fare would work out.
Having to take the car to PVD and taking a whole weekend day to fly around might just garner the wife's ire.

p.s. I am also not happy about not being able to use corporate booked travel as I do have a choice among carriers and sometimes do have to force the system to take US flights.

Correction -- I got a message from the CP desk -- the rep called back ^ to tell me that the information he gave me was incorrect and that it is in fact good for 20K this year and 20K next year, so if you are a CP and have rollover this is good for 40K for next year, and anyone else can gain 20K in each year towards qualification. ^ ^

Dividend Miles 20th Anniversary promotion
Question
What is the Dividend Miles 20th Anniversary promotion?
Answer
To celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Dividend Miles program, we are offering a special promotion in appreciation for your continued loyalty.
Book and purchase your roundtrip tickets for travel on US Airways at usairways.com, and you can earn up to 20,000 bonus Dividend Miles that also count toward Preferred status.
Bookings and travel must be completed between November 16, 2004 and February 16, 2005.
From LGA you can do 5 quick BUF/SYR/ROC trips for $116 per trip all in and make silver or whatever they call first tier elite.
In total you 25K miles that count toward elite status, 5-8K in online booking bonuses, plus whatever else you can get from existing status. I'm going to do it in Jan I think.

Wow. That is directly contradictory to every other statement in the offer - "Bonus miles earned from travel completed between 11/16/04-12/31/04 will be credited to members 2004 Preferred balance and bonus miles earned from travel completed between 1/1/05-2/16/05 will be credited to members 2005 Preferred balance.", etc.

Has anyone had any of these bonus miles post yet? I know the terms say 3-6 weeks after the flight, but usually USAir mile promos post at the same the as the flight miles.
I bought a ticket on 11/20 for same-day travel. I had two flight segments (the minimum to trigger the bonus) that day and two the following day. The flights miles for the two 11/20 segments just posted, but the bonus was not there.
Only reason I ask is that this trip, with the 2,000 bonus status miles, will put me at 100,028 on the year. I want to see my account say CP as soon as possible.

This is a good promotion except for one thing. You need at least 2 segments for the promo to apply. If you were flying out of or into a hub city, it is harder to find the lower fares with connections. I hate that many of the go fares will be excluded because many are nonstop. To think that even a transcon nonstop doesn't count is really detrimental to the promotion. If you're flying 5000 miles RT on US, they shouldn't take you out of the promo because you flew it nonstop. That is a major snag with this.

I think that's a misread if you don't take everything into account.
Eligibility is based on tickets purchased online and flown on US Airways only (minimum two segments required)
I think they state this to disqualify two one-way tickets being purchased and to allow open-jaw and roundtrip tickets qualify.

OK, here's the answer I received to the question on whether these were actual miles or only tier miles:
"Earn up to 20,000 Bonus Miles that count toward Prize Eligible and also toward Preferred Status"
Clear now? :p Is that Mumbai-speak? Charlotte-speak? Crystal City gobbledygook? I asked for clarification.
Regarding the other questions:
"I wanted to verify your second question with our Marketing Services and was told that if you take 3 RT's in 2004 and your 4th trip in 2005, you will receive the 5,000 bonus for your 4th trip in 2005. The promotion would then begin over in the same sequence.
I am not aware of any exceptions for Chairman's Preferred members with a carryover balance."
So the balance doesn't restart in '05.
Extending the above sequence:
- 3 flights in '04 - 2K+3k+4K
- flights in '05: 5K+6K+2K+3K+4K (max out at 20k)

Thanks for the clarification. I just saw the "two segments minimum" on the TOS. It was unclear as to whether there had to be 2 segments each way or what. That's what threw me.
And yes, I do tend to complicate things more than I should. That's why I wish the airlines would spell out the rules for a 9th grader. That would save us a lot of questions. lol

I emailed US CS and asked them if they could post the bonus points soon so that I can have access to the CP line. I did not get a reply, but when I checked my account today, I see that I am CP (still have 98,xxx preferred miles).
Just a idea if these miles would make a difference for anyone status-wise. For me, I have a flight to FL in late Dec and will have a much better shot at an upgrade as a CP than as a GP.

For this, I should get 22,000 status miles (enough to bump me up to Gold -- important since I will do some international travel next year, so *Gold is worth something), and 28,000 FFM (4 trips * 1000 + 2000 Silver Bonus + 18,000 from this + 4,000 Online Booking).

Cheapest RT has to be $58 out of PHL to Providence, Hartford, or RDU

United did something sort of along the same lines with regard to changing the terms of the offer earlier this year:
Ok, so now it seems that they have two different T's and C's. The first allowing up to 40k the second capping it at 20k.

---------- Original Note ----------
Dear Gold Desk,
Please see the attached email from Barry Biffle highlighting the terms and
conditions of Promotion 6855, which I registered for in November, 2004.
As you can see, from the original text, I can earn 20,000 preferred miles for
5 paid flights in 2004 and another 20,000 preferred miles for 5 paid flights
in 2005.
A review of the website indicates a change of a "maximum of 20,000 preferred
miles" can be given to a member. This is a complete reversal of the offer I
signed up for.
I would like some clarification of this issue as soon as possible. I have
purchased 5 roundtrips for 2005 with the express purpose of obtaining status
miles. If Dividend Miles will not honor the terms of the original offer, I will
ask USAirways to cancel my flights and refund my money.
Sincerely,
Mr PHLbuddy

Thanks, PHLbuddy. This isn't going to affect me, as I have no plans to travel before the end of the year... BUT...
We need to be careful, folks. Does this mean only those who call them on it get the double dip, or will everyone who qualifies in both calendar years get it?
I ask this because of the BOA Platinum 15K fiasco. To refresh people's minds on this... you got the 15K only if you had spent the required $25K on/before the date they sent the corrected mailing (which I still think stinks, even though I had qualified, fought for, and waited for the miles to post like watching paint dry), else you got the "corrected" 10K preferred upon spending $25K on the card.

""Thanks for the note. Plus, you can earn up to another 20,000 award & status miles toward Preferred status again in 2005. You can get a maximum of 20K in 2004 and a maximum of 20K in 2005. But you would need to fly five trips under the program in each year.""
"So for example, if you flew three trips in 2004 and two in 2005 you would get 20K award miles total, and would get 9K status miles in 2004 and 11K status miles in 2005. If you then flew an additional five trips in 2005, you would only earn another 11K miles because it is capped at 20K miles for each year. Of course, the best deal is if you can squeeze in five trips in each year. Good luck, hope you get to take advantage of it."

Someone correct me if I'm not right here... 11K + an additional 11K = 22K for 2005, not 20K. l4pi, is our CCY buddy not able to add correctly or will they really only give 20k? If this is the case, we may have another loophole. I guess it could come down to how the latin programmers code this offer.

Hey, don't bust my chops. I'm not a mind reader, just the messenger. :D
I'm quite sure this was a mistake as our source was quite clear it is a max total of 20K per year.

What's gotten in your shorts today, l4pi??? :p
I'm just saying what's what here. The math doesn't add up. Is it a mistake or is this they way they are going to play?

Oh quit it. Don't get your shorts in a wad, I was just kidding. :p
Let's just say that our source is better at marketing than math. :D

l4p,
Thanks for posting US' response. I've got to agree about the math error. The main point is 20K each in 04 & 05.
Looks like I'm be spending some time doing the MHT-PHL shuffle a couple of times.

As a note the website's been updated again:
Maximum of 20,000 bonus miles toward Preferred status can be earned in 2004 and then again in 2005.

Can anyone who has taken advantage of this offer confirm that you recieved 20K in 2004 and again in 2005? Has anyone had their total 40K post yet? I am about to book some MRs but I want to make sure the "double dipping" is in fact legit before I do it. I'm mostly interested in hearing from people who did NOT call CS back when there was ambiguity about the offer!
Thanks!

I received my 20K for 2004; however, I've taken 3 RTs so far in 2005 and none of the bonuses have posted. I've called the CP desk several times -- each time I was told that they would post soon. Last time I called the CP agent conferenced in someone from the DMSC and they looked at my record and said that they should post, but something was wrong. They put a note in my file and told me that after I complete all 5 RTs for 2005 to call and they will manually add all the bonuses -- not exactly the answer I wanted but.... my last 2 RTs are next weekend and then I will start calling again.

If needed, Kim, I have an email from Dividend Miles Service center stating they will honor the promotion as originally distributed (20k preferred miles in 2004 and another 20k preferred miles in 2005).

I just checked my Dividend Miles statement and the first bonus for 2005 posted on Saturday the 29th...3K for my first January roundtrip, not the 2K that I had expected.
I received the 2K bonus for a trip to LAS where the outbound occurred on 12/31 and the return on 12/4; that bonus posted to my 2004 balance. I thought the clock would start back over at 2K for the first 2005 r/t, since the promo allows you to obtain a maximum of 20,000 preferred bonus miles each year. But apparently US's computers aren't sophisticated enough to recognize that.
I'm not complaining, since I'll only have three roundtrips total (one in 2004 and two in '05) that qualify for the bonus, but for those of you who took five roundtrips in '04 and five in '05, you'll probably have to call the DMSC to get all of the bonuses to post correctly.

Actually wahoo, they did it correctly. Regardless of what year it was taken in, the first RT will be 2K, 2nd 3K, etc until you earn a maximum of 20K for that calendar year. For example, the way it will work out for me is the following:
2004
RT#1 2K
RT#2 3K
2005
RT#3 4K
RT#4 5K
RT#5 6K
RT#6 2K
RT#7 3K
hope this helps....

Thanks for the input guys! Although I have to admit it is not exactly the encouragement I was looking for....seems like no-one has actually gotten the 40K post yet.... Since the offer expires in less than two weeks I pretty much have to take them at their word and go for it. PHLbuddy, I may be asking you for that email!
Everyone, please do keep us updated when your miles come through...
