Does anyone have any experience with the tax deduction for donated miles to a charity? Can you deduct say .01 per mile donated as a charity deduction? Do you have the charity provide a receipt with a value?

Thanks

In order to deduct a miles contributon, you would first have to be taxed on the miles you earn. I doubt you want to go there.

I am not at all sure that you would have to be taxed before you could get a deduction, after all, donations of goods like used clothing which you may not have been taxed on can be tax deductable.

Is it possible to donate miles to a charity of your choice? How would a charity be able to take a donation of miles?

This is the small print included on American Airlines' charity page:

"Donated miles are not tax deductible. For every three miles donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, American Airlines will donate one mile to American's Miles For Kids In NeedŽ program. Miles For Kids In Need provides transportation for seriously ill youngsters from needy families seeking medical treatment that's not available where they live. Miles For Kids In Need is a mark of American Airlines, Inc."

If you are looking for a place where your miles can do a lot of good, rather than just providing yourself with a tax deduction, you might want to check out AA's page. I don't know, but I suspect other airlines probably have similar charity partners.

Mileage donations are NOT tax deductible. But as you received a ton of them through your mortgage scheme, go ahead and donate some. Greed is not good. :)
