If it would remember where I was in multiple tabs when I closed it, and have the ability to restart there, I'd ditch Avant in a heartbeat.

And it doesn't have a spellchecker

(I know, I know, I have posted this for the longest time, but yet, they still don't have one ;) )

Open a couple of tabs and go to the pages you wish to use at startup. Then, go to Tools->Options and select "Use current pages." It's that simple!

Mozilla is GREAT!

Fantastic. ^ Firebird/Firefox is as good as it gets browser wise.

Thanks for any info.

I'll let winkydink speak for himself, but I'd really like Firefox to remember the last set of pages I had open, not a fixed set of the same pages that always open on startup.

For me it's a minor point, though . . . the only time I need to use IE is when I have to cut/paste an HTML table into Excel (itemized calls on my cell phone bill, in my case). If Firefox did that properly, I'd never use IE.

Some bug fixes and security updates. Don't know why they don't publish a proper changelog; here's an unofficial one:

Works great - just installed the newest version on 11/10 on both work computers and home computers. So far so good.

I'm still preferring Mozilla, it has more of the functions I need.

Just installed the 1.0 final release. Works great.

Re starting up several tabs semi-automatically, one way is to put all the links in a separate folder in the bookmarks and toolbar folder. Then all you have to do is click on the folder on the bookmarks toolbar and select the "open in tabs" option and all the pages will load in their respective tabs.

The tabbed browser features in Firefox 1.0 is lacking, compared to the Tabbed Browser Preferences extension available in previous versions. Everything else is as expected.

Another alternative to IE is Avant Browser (http://www.avantbrowser.com). It uses the same "engine" as IE (therefore, vunderable to the same security issues IE has been dogged with), but it gives you a lot (maybe more) features of Firefox.

I know I'm in the minority, but I still prefer Netscape. That "New Tab" button just to the left of the first tab is just so useful that not having it bugs me whenever I use Mozilla or Phoenix/Firefox.

Ctrl-T opens a new tab in FireFox. I use it all the time.

Even more useful, though, is when you click any URL, Bookmark, or Favorite, hold Ctrl when you click, and the URL/Bookmark/Favorite opens in a new tab.

I'd repeat a bunch more keystrokes, (such as Ctrl-n, changes focus to the n-th Tab), but they are nicely summarized here: Firefox Help - Keyboard Shortcuts (http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/keyboard.html). This shows a very useful comparison to the equivalent keystrokes in IE or Opera, so if there's something you can do in one browser, this matrix shows you how to do it in the two other browsers.

It's quite easy to add a "New Tab" button to your Navigation bar in FireFox. Right-click on the navigation bar, click "Customize", then drag the New Tab button to your preferred location.

As NS is developed from the same code base, or some semblance of it, all of those shortcuts also work in NS. I'll look through the others and see if there are other differences, and whether they are worth it. In the past, a new version of NS has followed a Mozilla release, with the upgraded features, within a week or two.

Adding New Tabs and Bookmarks through customizing the toolbar gets close, but NS puts the "New Tab" next to the first tab and "Bookmarks" next the bookmarks, not in the toolbar with everything else. Close enough that it's personal preference and what you're used to. In the end, they're both "Not IE". :)

You have to re-install the plug-in for Firefox. That also goes for anything Macromedia.

Actually, I believe you can pretty much position the tabs where you want when customizing the toolbars in Firefox. For example, to increase viewing area on my laptop display, I have some of the navigation buttons and the address window all combined up on the top toolbar (the one that also has File, Edit, View Go, etc.), and in the toolbar below that, I have the Google window, new tab button, reload button, and bookmarks toolbar, all together on that second toolbar and that's it. Gives me a little more room for viewing web pages.

Three observations so far on Firefox.

1) Web pages open faster than IE6.

2) My autoscroll function on my mouse has slowed down to the point where it is no longer useful. Has anyone else encountered this?

3) I used ieSpell as my spell check program for web based sites like FT and Hotmail. Does Firefox have a similar spell check program available for web based applications?

I just downloaded Firefox for my Mac. Seems OK so far. One question...does Firefox have the "Forms Autofill" ability as does IE and Safari? I can't seem to locate one and this will be a knockout punch if it doesn't.
Thanks...

I downloaded the dictionary search extension function but I don't know how to access it to use it. Is there a way to move an icon to a tool bar or are there command keys?

I have been using Opera for several years and it just crashed one time to many so I'm testing Firefox. It's pretty good, and it doesn't crash, and so far hasn't been rejected by Fidelity and Hilton who don't much like Opera.

Cholula,

I downloaded the plug-in "AutoForm" for Firefox and it has been working just fine to automatically fill typical web forms. There are some neat features such as the ability to not save a particular form's data ... and also some configuration so it fills out only what you want it to fill out.

You can get to it by visiting the plug-ins section on the Firefox website.

Hope that helps :)

Sylvia,

First - make sure that the dictionary extension has been successfully added to Firefox. To do this, go to Tools -> Extensions on the Firefox menu. Ensure that "DictionarySearch" is listed (the most current version is 0.7).

Firefox does require a restart after installing a new extension...but I'm assuming you have restarted the browser since you initially installed the extension.

To check a given word in the dictionary - you just highlight the word (or words) ... right click ... and select "Dictionary Search for 'highlighted word here'".

Hope that helps :)

Opera does this automatically, including remembering all histories, so it's like being in the same session.

Other things Opera seems to do more easily than Firefox:

One letter shortcut for back (z) and forward (x).

One letter shortcut for zoom (0) and un-zoom (9) font/image sizes, one letter shortcut (6) to return to original size.

Right click menu options for clone current window (good for following 2 different trails) and for go to URL (instead of cutting and pasting a text URL into a new window).

One button switching between user and author stylesheets.

SLOWER than IE? No way, there has to be something wrong with your installation. Firefox is constantly faster than IE, all tests agree with that. There are even ways to tweak it to be even faster than "out of the box".

As for some sites not working, I agree, some web designers have focussed too much on making their site work with IE, and not enough time sticking to the W3 standards. Having a browser that complies 100% with the W3 standards isn't a bug, it's how a browser is meant to be.
