MilesBuzz! - LHR - NRT. Best way to gain miles?

Hi there,
It looks as if I need to fly LHR - NRT next year. I usually fly UA or other *Alliance carriers so given a free hand in booking this, it's be simple. Unfortunately, the problem is that I am travelling out with a group of colleagues and it seems as if we are all going to be required to travel together and it looks like being on a Virgin flight. Oh, it'll be in Economy on low fare tickets.
I should be able to book almost anything provided
i) I travel with my colleagues and
ii) the fare is the same (or comparable) to my colleagues.

What can I do to earn miles on this trip?
Here's what I've thought of:
1 - Join the VS frequent flyer program. This doesn't seem such a good idea as I'm unlikely to fly VS again in the near future.

2 - Join another FF program that partners with VS. Who does this and can you earn miles on the LHR-NRT flights?

3 - Look for a 2(+) carrier flight so I only "waste" the LHR-NRT (VS) leg and credit the NRT-LHR (*Alliance) leg to my UA account. This could work out if the price is right but is tricky to get a low fare.

4 - Book a RTW flight ex LHR with the 1st leg LHR-NRT on VS and then the rest on *Alliance flights. This would require few days holiday but after an expected hard and busy week in Japan, this seems attractive. There are some very cheap RTW fares from the UK so this might work out.

Any suggestions, options or recommendations are gratefully received!
Cheers,
Jason

Why not join singapore Airline's ffp? You can accrue miles from VS, the whole of star alliance and a few other airlines (Emirates being one)

BMI Diamond club allows you to earn mileage on Virgin as does Delta Skymiles. If you already have a Star Alliance Frequent flyer card with United then maybe you should opt for Delta, you are then covered for any trips within the Skyteam alliance in the future which includes KLM, AF, CSA and many other partners.

I find the virgin frequent flyer is a lot more generous than most for things like car hire and hotel stays so I top my mileage up in this way. Also at the moment Virgin offer you a 3,000 mile bonus for referring friends so maybe you could join and refer your colleagues and get 3,000 miles from each of them, and if you need someone to refer you then I'd be more than happy to volunteer :D
