Can anyone recommend any one-day safaris outside Sydney to see some wildlife, such as kangaroos, koala, etc? I used a really great company Redback Safaris (http://www.redbacksafaris.com.au/) while I was in Perth to take me up to the Pinnacles desert. Cost was AUD$100 and I thought that was pretty good for all that was included.

Thanks

For SYD you are probably better off visiting Taronga Zoo.

There's another place in SYD you can see koalas etc. Koala Park is in a suburb of SYD & there are places that run tours. Have a look at their website www.koalapark.com.au & they have a link to a tour company which runs tours to KP travelling on the ferry & then bus.

Don't forget the Australian Reptile Park (http://www.reptilepark.com.au/) - less than an hours drive north of Sydney and really well set up.

Feel free to come and ask for more information on Australian zoos over at our local ZooBeat discussion forums too ! http://www.zoobeat.org/forums

There are kangaroos in the wild in the grounds of Morisset hospital about 2 hours train ride from Sydney (AUD 15.60 return if you leave after 9:00AM or all day weekends - may increase slightly after 04/01/2005) and a 6-8 km taxi ride from Morisset (AUD 25.00 should do the taxi).

Note that the hospital is a psychiatric hospital but is just about abandoned now. The trip in the train is quite scenic, especially near the Hawkesbury River.

If you get back into Morisset before 2PM, the hotel across from the station serves a good lunch (not open for lunch Mondays, though).
