I tried 3 times (for 3 different dates), but I was told rooms are not available using points. But rooms are available if I book through cash. I even tried from US customer service but in vain.

I thought if the rooms are available, then we should be able to get the room using points.

I had booked past January in Mumbai and Delhi and did not have any problems. I have heard that other have had problems booking on points in Bangalore.

Hotels in India do get very full especiall during festive times. It is my understanding that hotels can sell rooms even if sold out and go into an oversold situation but will not provide reward rooms if the hotel is sold out.
Another possibility could be that they are 'sold out' for standard rooms which is what one gets on reward!!

If there are other room types, then it was my understanding that you should be able to pony up more points for a higher category of room that is still being sold.

I asked for possible upgrade using more points, but no use.

Which dates are you looking for and at which property?

Not all hotels offer upgrade awards.

Are you referring to upgrade awards (from any given category of room to the next higher category of room) or awards for a room in a higher category than the "standard room" depending on room type? Perhaps it is one and the same thing?

Had no problems booking rooms at the Maurya Sheraton last year. However there was some discrepecny regarding the points they were charging. So I had to get the Higher Powers involved--and yes, Lurker and the gang rectified the problem :)

I was trying to get one night at the Bangalore Sheraton but to no avail. They did not have any standard rooms left for sale for the night I wanted even though they had other room types available for sale. I was lucky to get an upgraded room (suite) at twice the points.

We just stayed at the Maurya Sheraton last week using points. There were no standard rooms available (I booked about 6 weeks in advance) but we got an executive club room for extra points. According to my SPG bank, I was charged 4,000 points for 2 weekend nights and 15,000 points for 3 weekday nights... Is there a way to find out if this is correct? I looked on SPG.com and it says 3000-4000 points per stay but it doesn't have additional details. Also, are different points required for weekdays and weekends?

By the way, we did not get our airport pickup, and another FT member was at the hotel and he asked the GM about it. She told him that we were in a standard room, not an Exec Club. I don't care, but I want to make sure that we are using the correct points for what we actually received. That will be part of another thread about this hotel, once I sort my laundry. :)

Same here. Twice the standard award points and you can get a suite (in Bangalore). From the description of the suite and amenities that come with it, seemed well worth the points so I was happy to go with it. Hyderabad - you can get an upgraded room for more points - again seems worth the extra points (comes with breakfast).

I have had success getting standard rewards in Agra and Jaipur.

3,000 Starpoints = one free night during the weekend
4,000 Starpoints = one free night during the week

6,000 + 12,000 = 18,000 for a combination of two weekend nights + three weekday nights.

Hi William.

I was charged:
4000 per weekend night x 2 = 8,000
5000 per weekday night x 3 = 15,000
Total = 23,000

I was told that we had a specialty room. I've contacted SPG Customer Care about the lack of airport pickup. (seems to be a recurring problem with this hotel... :( )

I think this is correct...?

Thank you!

A Specialty Select room upgrade award at this property would be 1,000 extra Starpoints per night, so 5,000 + 18,000 = 23,000 is correct. The numbers I gave were for a standard room.

I happen to have called yesterday to book two weeknights in January, and could only get an executive club room for 5,000 points per night. Still beats $300, though.

I had decent award availability at Indian Sheratons. Sometimes you have to pony up the extra points for executive rooms as the standard rooms are sold out. Dec-Mar is busy season. Despite the Tsunami effect and related travel cancellations, many hotels are booked full and starwood properities here are no exception.
