bmi diamond club - Y catering on EDI-LHR 1640 and other trivia

I'm heading down to London on Sunday and was wondering whether the 1640 is a "mediocre sandwich" flight or "peanuts only" - unusually I'm paying, and I might consider using one of my upgrade thingies.

Another random thought as we came in to land at EDI today - has anyone else noticed those large "Archimedes Screw" things near the east end of the terminal building? For drainage purposes I assume, but has anyone ever seen them working?

There was something else BD-related I was going to ask too, but sadly it's now gone completely...

Ahh - remembered:

does anyone happen to know what Mark the Spitfire gate guardian at Edinburgh is?

My guess would be a late-production Mark IX or maybe a Canadian Mark XVI, but I'm no expert...

Peanuts + Drink Service for the 1640.

In Y class:
BD Flights departing before 0930ish get hot breakfast panini.
Cold sandwich during lunchtime (1230-1330ish departures) and dinnertime (1900 onwards) departures.

All other flights Peanuts + Drink Service .

Theoretically yes, just pretzels. But there have been experiments with full sandwich catering on the 1840 recently so you may be in luck (...) Ask nicely at check-in if the flight is full; your supervisor, according to the rota, is Cynthia Cruickshank. She takes no nonsense, but on the other hand she'll know if there are any op-ups to be had. She's got a tight, grey, bob haircut; aim for her at check-in. You're brave surrendering your vouchers - I'd have waited until a transatlantic or a MAN or LIN or summat. Still, good luck to you. What fare class are you in?

As for for the strange thingies at EDI, I'm told by the BAA press office that they are there to provide drainage information to those planning the taxiway extensions (and new rail link, presumably...). Aside from that, I'm in the dark. I will confess that the current work on gates 9, 10 and 11 threw me the other day. I sleepwalked out of the lounge at 0620, joined the usual queue directly opposite at Gate 6, got to the front and was then politely informed that Gate 6 was in fact the Flybe departure for Southampton. I blushed suitably.

The Spitfire is a balsa wood copy. The original Turnhouse gate Gaurdian was sent south many, many years ago. In it's place we got the one that is now locted next to the Police Station.
