Do HH members get the car rental bonus at Embassy Suites? How about other members of the Hilton family besides Hilton itself? I haven't been getting them at Embassy Suites and they tell me that they don't participate in the car rental bonus?
Any one out there have any experience with this issue?

TrojanHorse,
I have been getting my car bonuses for Hilton Garden Inns, but I don't see why Embassy Suites wouldn't give you these either.
Now, I doubt if Hampton Inns would be as willing, however.

Don't doubt it - every HHonors hotel (including Hampton Inns) gives car rental bonuses. Unfortunately, you almost always have to tell a front desk clerk how to do it - they need to put your car rental company's 2-letter code (e.g., NA for National) in the "CR" box on their screen.

I almost always have to explain the airline bonus (as distinguished from the double dip) to the front desk staff as well.

Yeah, you both are correct; at times my statements don't have the car rental bonus in them. (you could tell whether they put in the bonus by looking for the 'CR:' notation on the bottom of your charges; and for the airline, it should have your FF# printed on it)
For example, a good/solid posting is when you see the following line on your statement (each hotel may have slightly different format):
HH:xxxxxxxxx AL:yy A#:zzzzzzzz R:a CR:bb
Where
xxxxxxxxx is your HHonors number
yy is the airline code (UA for United, DL for Delta, AA for American, etc)
zzzzzzzz is your Frequent Flyer # (for Double Dip posting
a is (I think) the number of rooms
bb is the car rental code (NA for National RentACar, AV for Avis, HZ for Hertz, etc)
Most of the time when any of the above fields are blank and I'm already miles away from the hotel, I managed to get some help from the Great Adam Burke himself, by emailing him the hotel stay dates and the breakdown bonus amount I believe I'm entitled to. He may be found lurking anywhere on this board, where you may also find his e-mail address.

I believe that the Avis bonus is no longer available at the hotel. This changed sometime over the past year. I think that now you must provide Avis with your HHonors number and thus can't receive airline miles from them (Avis) if you go this route.

Also, don't forget the "AB" block - 250 bonus points for a flight taken within 24 hours of the stay on one of HHonors partner airlines (if applicable). Your "preferred" airline for double dip (in "AL") doen't have to match the one you were actually flying (in "AB").

A simple call to the HHonors Customer Service (800-548-8690) always (at least in my experience) fixes little problems (e.g., no CR bonus) right over the phone.

You get both. But you only get the former if you ask for it during check-in. The latter should be automatic, but I always ask them to double-check all the time.

Although Hertz was mentioned in a previous post, I don't think you can get miles with them either. I know Alamo was dropped also. The National key chain I carry quit working for me at one Hilton...they demanded to see the contract. I gave the previous week's National contract since I knew they would ask and they actually checked the date on the contract. I had an Alamo that week and mumbled that I thought it was a National. This was the Southfield, MI Hilton Inn...they know all my ploys now...sheesh.

Somewhere in the Hilton forum, there was a discussion about points and a brief mention of getting extra points for rental cars. I was under the impression that if you have a car rented while staying at the hotel, you will get extra hotel points for your stay. Is this correct?
I was just at the College Station Hilton, but when I told the Front Desk Supervisor that I had a national car rental, she just told me that if it was in my profile, then it would be taken care of. I told her that I thought I was supposed to mention it at check in or check out, so she did write something on my receipt. This stay did just post, but I noticed that nothing was under the section for car rental.
Can anyone clear the confusion for me and tell me how to get those extra points if they do exist?
Also do a search using "car rental" in the Hilton forum and you will get many responses!

ziptravel -- You're entitled to 250 bonus HH points. Unfortunately, very few check-in clerks know much about it. They were supposed to fill the "Car:" block on the reservation screen with "NA" (code for National car rental). Apparently, that didn't take place in your case. A quick call to the HHonors customer service should easily rectify the problem, though.

Most Hampton Inn desk personnel don't know about this nor do they verify. They have to scroll down to page 2 where they see the field for CR (Car Rental). Just tell them to put the letters NA in that field. Some Hiltons do verify...Southfield, MI Hilton Inn desk personnel are wise to me. Asked for my National Rental Agreement. I brought one because I knew they would ask. They then checked the date to see it was from a month ago and declined to give me the additional points. Busted!

I need help understanding the Hilton Car Rental Bonus. It is my understanding that if I present the keys to my rental car from a participating car rental partner (i.e. National) to the front desk staff upon check in I will receive an additional 250 bonus points on top of any airline or bonus miles I am earning directly through National??? Is this correct?
That being the case, let's say I rent the car for a week but check into different Hilton Family hotels during the time which I have the rental car. Do I receive 250 points with each check-in or just my initial check-in?
Finally, is there any way to get the points if I forgot to request them during my stay?
Thanks!

The answer is yes to all three questions.
In fact most times they dont ask for the keys just request that National be added to you folio at checkin or checkout ( so you can cheat a little by asking even if you have no rental or if your rental is with a different company)
If not added at time of the stay you can call Honors tell them you had National and they will add the points manually over the phone. Sometimes if the CSR is in a bad mood they might ask you to fax them a copy of the rental agreement.

The Avis bonus looks like it's only 500 miles per rental, not stay. Too bad it's not good at the hotel desk - that would be awesome for a 5 night, multi-hotel, road trip.

It is 250 HHonors points. The 500 was only from Avis, but it was set to expire on 12/31. But who knows if it has been extended, with how poor HH communication has been. If it is still in effect, in order to get the 500 Avis, you must give your HH number to both Avis and the Hotel. This is not clear from the T&C, but something I learned here (from Eugene).
Here is the T&C (scroll or click down to the respective sections for Avis, National, Thrifty and Sixt [Europe]):

Actually, here is how it works.
You need to choose at the Avis counter whether you want airline miles or HH points (with Avis, it's "either or" deal, while with the rest of HH car rental partners you can get both). If you rent from Avis not in conjunction with a HH stay, you'll get 250 HH points per rental, no matter how long. If your Avis rental is in conjunction with a HH stay, you'll get extra 250 HH bonus points (to the total of 500 HH points). As long as your HH stay is eligible for points and is in your name, you do not have to mention Avis at the hotel.
When renting from other HH car rental partners (e.g., Thrifty), you can request airline miles at the Thrifty counter, then show your keys or rental agreement at check-in at Hilton and get 250 bonus HH points.

At the top right-hand side of the statement in any Hilton property is an area where the airline and car rental is supposed to be credited. I find that many times I initially do not receive credit for renting from a car rental company that is a partner of Hilton HHonors despite handing the front desk clerk my car rental membership card and proof of renting a car from that company during my stay.
By the way, is it erroneous of me to believe that car rental credit cannot be earned at Hampton Inns, as I usually do not give them the car rental information? I wonder this because I see an area on every one of my Hampton Inn statements which show the area where car rental credit can be given.
I eventually do get it resolved (whether at the property itself or through Hilton HHonors) and ultimately get credit for the car rental, but I find this has been happening often lately.
Has anyone else been having this problem?

Yes Hampton desk personal all have to be told exactly where to put the rental car credit since that has to placed manually ( your preffered airline is already in the system)
One thing I notice is the narrow form that Hamptons use very often cuts off just at far right where the car is to be inserted so I often have to make sure at check-out, that said I have always got my National points.

You will get the 250 bonus points for each stay where you had a car. I stopped renting with National earlier this year, but prior to that the extra points only ever showed up about half the time -- most front desk folks never seemed to know how to enter it in their computers!
Somewhat frustrating, as I ended up having to call every few months to get the Diamond desk to rectify the missing points. I will say that I always received credit from them after the call. A hassle, but it is worth the extra effort since the points can add up.
Now if only National's service wasn't so crappy...

Used to be you just told them who your rental car company was and they just posted it.
From now on if you do not have it placed on the folio you WILL BE REQUIRED to fax it in, no more manually postings..
This used to be the modus operandi many years ago which they seem to be reverting to. Its only 250 points might not be worth the hassle.

Hilton awards 250 bonus points if you have a rental car at the same time as your stay. I have always just showed the keys at checkin and usually the clerk just enters the appropriate code. Many times, they don't know what you are talking about however, so you have to explain that if you rent from Alamo, for instance, that you get an additonal 250 points from Hilton. this was very nice during the recent double/triple rental car points promotions.
I think the op meant that if the points didn't post (maybe because the clerk didn't know how to enter the code) that you could call Hilton customer setvice and Hilton would manually enter the points. fwiw, I only called once when points didn't post for a rental car. 250 points seems like a bit of a waste of time (oh I am so sorry to offend all you obsessed Fters ;) ).

It is worth a try for summer stays, especially if you have your car rental paper work, but I think Mikesilv says it pretty well.
For those who might not know HH gives 250 point/stay for any car rentals in conjunction with a (paid) stay.
I find most of the time the desk CSRs have no idea where to enter the code or even what the code is, I have to tell them NA ( for National ) in the "car" box.
So rather than going through this most of the times I usually wait till I have to speak to the HH desk on another matter and then I will give them the missing ones and up to now they just insert it manually.
I had about 8 going back to early April missing, so they posted them ( they post instantly) " as a courtesy " ..I was told. :)
Up until now they did not ask for any proof regarding the rentals, that is what I suspect is changing.

A quote from the Hilton website:National Car Rental
Earn 250 HHonors bonus points whenever you rent from National in conjunction with your qualifying stay at any HHonors hotel.
Just present your National Car Rental agreement or keys when you check in at the hotel. This seems to apply to Avis, Alamo, and Thrifty also... maybe some others as well.
So, if I rent a car for a duration of 3 days, and during those 3 days, I'm staying at two different Hilton family hotels, does this mean I can present my rental agreement at both hotels? And thus earn the 250 points twice?
Just thought I'd check before attempting... ;)

YES. :)
The line of "250 points" is added to your folio by each hotel that sees your keys or rental contract. Plus, you can get it even on an award stay that earns 0 other points.

6*21.95=131.70, if you bought the same it would cost you $150.00 (12000*.0125) or that same 150 would net you 2250 points(assuming fixed points and points option)

When you check in, just tell the desk clerk that you have an Alamo/National/Thrifty rental car and ask if they will put the car rental bonus code in your reservation. Some don't know what it is, so just be patient as they may have to ask. Sometimes, not often, they will ask to see the rental agreement. Whenever I check in — or sometimes when I check out — I ensure that there is an “NA” next to the area where it reads “CAR:” in the upper-right portion of the receipt.

So do you get the car rental points IN ADDITION to the Hilton points or is it one or the other only?

So do you get the car rental points IN ADDITION to the Hilton points or is it one or the other only?In addition to the base Hilton HHonors points you earn with every stay — as well as bonus Hilton HHonors points if you have Hilton HHonors VIP status — with every qualifying car rental and airline partner, you also receive: Miles added to your frequent flier account — 500 or 100 miles, depending on the Hilton HHonors property at which you stay, and Hilton HHonors points for renting a car — in my case, 250 Hilton HHonors points for renting from National Car Rental.I believe that Hilton HHonors is the only frequent guest program awards all of the above for every qualifying stay.

I totally forgot that you could get HH points for car rentals. I usually use National, 17 times this year already, and occasionally Hertz. Do you just mention what rental you have and also what other rentals are good for points?
For National...Just tell them the code is NA

I've had very good success with getting Hilton to retroactively apply National car rental points when I've forgotten to ask for them at check-in or check-out.

when the person at check in seems perplexed about the National Car Rental issue I gently ask them to find out and they usually do it Now the code will be useful :) I have always got the 250 points extra.

I am currently at a Hilton and today asked about this for my Thrifty hire as per the Hilton site - they said they have never heard of it, and that I must contact Hilton Head Office. They gave me a number, and told me that there was a fee to call free numbers from the room.
So I have no idea how to claim these.
I know that I had no issues in Scotland at a Hilton, so wondered if it was exclusive to certain countries.
Anyone know how I can convince reception that they can enter it. I did point out that I could not show my documents to the Head office, but they just shrugged their shoulders.
Many thanks.

Ask for manager on duty and try again
If that does not work..tell them to call the Hilton 800 number for you from desk.

I find that I don't get the points about 50% of the time -- even when I do ask at the hotel. Instead of making a big deal of this at the hotel, just call up HH after the stay posts and ask them to fix it. I've never had a problem. It's only 250 points/stay.
Oh -- I was told in Italy that this offer is not valid there. It may only be valid in certain countries.

Only about 2% of the HI or DT front desk people ever heard of this. I get tired of educating them for the crummy 250 points. I did educate them when it was a 3X promo a few months ago (Thrifty I believe). I dont know what I would do for a 2X promo.

The Frequently Asked thread is closed: do you still get extra HH points at the hotel front desk when you present your rental agreement or key in conjunction with stay? If yes, is there a list of rental companies?

Not sure about the number of companies ( I use only National) but its not necessary to show your agreement just inform the CSR at check-in or check-out.
You will find however that a great number of them dont know where to insert the info or the codes for the respective rental companies ( National = NA)
so a call to HH might be required.
I usually wait till have about four missing and then have them do it all at once.

Just told by the Diamond Desk that the Alamo/National Car Rental bonus has changed effective September 1 (they were advised September 16). Even though the hhonors web site still shows a 250 point car rental bonus for stays in conjunction with car rental. The representative seemed to infer that the only bonus will be available directly from the car rental counter when your HHonors number is added to the rental agreement. This is in response to two recent stays that posted without the car rental bonus even though it appears on the folio. Maybe one of the Hilton lurkers would like to enlighten us and shed light on any changes?

From HHonors web page
"National Car Rental
Earn 250 HHonors bonus points whenever you rent from National in conjunction with your qualifying stay at any HHonors hotel. Just present your National Car Rental agreement or keys when you check in at the hotel."
I ask at the front desk when I check in and tell them I have a national car rental and would like the 250 bonus points. Most of the time they have no clue what I am talking about the other half say OK. But I only get the points about 10% of the time.
I am currently at a Hampton and the front desk woman told me to call HHonors and find out how to get them. I told her that she should call and find out how to get them for me.
Does anyone have any better luck. I wish I knew what buttons to push so I could give them exact directions.

Happens about 8 out of 10 times at every type of Hilton property.
Step 1: Tell them that the car rental bonus field is located just below the airline field on their OnQ screen...that usually elicits a "oh wow, I never knew that was there" response.
Step 2: Check that the car rental bonus appears on your folio in the morning; if NA (National) or similar appears, you're OK.
Step 3: If the bonus doesn't appear, go to Front Desk before leaving and repeat Step 1.

Just to elaborate on my post #89 the problem is not adding the car rental bonus to folio. As of September 1 the points did not post to my HHonors account even though they were properly entered at the property level and appeared on the folio under car rental bonus. Thus my multiple calls to the Diamond Desk who (contrary to the web site) stated the program had changed. YMMV

Same here, most times the desk clerks don't know about it. I usually tell them to click on the preferences box where the HH# or FF# is and look for the field for "Bonus Car." Also, as stated above make sure NA shows up before you check out.

Worked for me in late August. Not sure about post Sept 1.

I waited for about two weeks after our three stays in S. Florida last month posted to my HHonors account correctly except for the car rental bonuses to post before emailing HHonors to request them. Noticed that while the correct "CAR NA" showed on my printed folios on checkout, still it didn't show on the folios from the HHonors website. Two days after my email, the correct car bonuses posted. So far this year I've had no problems with the front desks trying to figure out where to insert the information.

Seems silly to me. At the HH properties they don't even put in a reservation number for anything, you don't even have to really rent a car (though I don't cheat the system). And as far as I can tell, car reservations don't put down hotel #'s at all either.

You are one of the honest ones and are to be commended! How many road warriors out there have a National Car or other rental car key chains? Now is this another HH devaluation that you can't give the rental car company your FF number and then show the hotel your rental car keys? It was sometimes 500 points or even more. But 250 points add up too. Now it's either points or miles or National points. Flying out and renting a car tomorrow and I picked the Delta 500 mile bonus but I don't think I can get HH or National points in addition.
