I'm coming to Cape Town for a holiday in December and I am looking into hotels. Unfortunately, as can be expected at this time of year, the rates are quite high. I did find one hotel in Lonely Planet, called Townhouse

http://www.townhouse.co.za

Does anyone know anything about this hotel? The rate is good, I jsut wnated to know if it was a nice place. If anyone knows of other places which are worth a look, please let me know, I'm looking at maximum ZAR 700 a night really, although might go higher if a particularly nice place is available.

Does priceline cover Cape Town?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks
PhilH

The Townhouse Hotel is OK, but location is not great as the area around it is not too nice. It's used a lot by politicians as it's close to parliament. If you want to be able to walk around safely at night to say the Waterfront etc. then I would not suggest this hotel. If you are driving then it's perfectly good and the rate is great for that time of year!

As for other hotels, it really depends on what you want to do? If you are on holiday, I would look for hotels at / near the Waterfront. Also, look for B&B / Guesthouses, as these can often be as good as hotels.

Check out www.ananzi.co.za (google for south africa...)

If you find hotels / B&Bs you like, let me know and I can give you the low-down.....

floris_FRA many thanks for your help. That's the trouble with not knowing about a place, you can end up in an undesirable area. I wondered why the rate was so cheap for an otherwise pleasant looking hotel.

Other places I'm looking at are:

- Holiday Inn Waterfront (expensive!)
- Holiday Inn (Strand Street)
- Best Western Cape Suites
- Sontyger Guesthouse

Are any of these any good? Prices seem to be going up by the day, so I'm keen to book something soon!

Best if that selection I would say Holiday Inn Waterfront. Sontyger is way out of town (20+KM).

Have you looked at Protea Hotels? http://www.proteahotels.co.za/

Also, have a look in http://www.portfoliocollection.com/destinations/cape-town/
they have a great listing of guesthouses. On the map try to stick to the left coast from Cape Town to Bakoven. Also look at the other links on the left for Bed & Breakfast.

And remember, you have chosen the most expensive time of year by far for Cape Town. It's Xmas / New Year / Summer / School Holidays all in one! So prices will more than double over that time. And of course availability is tough! Not to mention the strong Rand....but I digress
