I know some here have been looking for the MPX, and well I found a site where you can preorder it for $599.99.... Which I think will be the Retail Price?

Anyway here is the site:

I'm always a little weary of sites that only show stock photos of a device.

The $600 price was the "semi-official" target price Motorola put on the device.

Mobilecityonline.com is a pretty good site, when it comes to Unlocked Phones.... My only problem is their prices.... If you look around you can get a phone somewhat cheaper elsewhere....

I know a few that has used Mobilecityonline.com, and they're happy....

Can anyone tell me what would be the best service provider to use with this phone? It say's GSM 900/1800/1900 and that it may not work properly with GSM 850.

Which provider supports 900-1900?

All GSM provider supports GSM 900/1800/1900.... If you go to Europe and Asia some providers uses 900MHZ But most are using 1800MHZ..... Here in the States, almost all providers use 1800 MHZ.... However is some areas 850MHZ is in use.....

What provider do you have now?

This is all very incorrect.

"All GSM operator supports GSM 900/1800/1900"???

In Europe and Asia almost ALL operators are on 900MHz with only the newer operators working on 1800MHz, in many countries there is hardly any coverage on 1800MHz outside the major residential areas.

In the US there isn't a single 1800MHz operator as they all work on 1900MHz (T-mobile for example) or 850MHz (Cingular for example).

For GSM1900 your best bet would be to go with T-mobile. Cingular/ATT Wireless operates a mixed GSM850/GSM1900 network.

Damn, ... was I thinking.... My head isn't in the right place today.... I should know Att and Tmobile uses 1900MHZ, Since I've ATT...And cingular uses 850mhz, but I thought Cingular only uses 850Mhz is some places.....

And Europe its 900Mhz, as I should know by now, that my 850/1800/1900 will not be good to have.... Damn Elections..... But hey NJ is a Swing State :D

I have one that I have used for a year in Euope. I just buy the pre-paid SIM card for that country and it works great. You have to be careful on AT&T ones as they are sometimes locked to the AT&T system. Mine is unlocked and will work on any network. I have to decided to get rid of it so look on the coupon connection page for my trade offer.

Your 850/1800/1900 will work in most major cities, and complete countries like Holland, UK and Germany that have pretty much 100% GSM1800 coverage.

It's countries like France and Spain that don't offer full coverage on GSM1800.

THe MPX from the above link, is unlocked.... So you will only need a pre-paid Sim, or if you already have A SIM from either T-mobile, ATT, Cingular, just use that....

Isn't Service Providers in the UK using 900MHZ?

Some are.

Orange is GSM1800
O2 is GSM900 AND GSM1800
T-mobile is GSM1800
Vodafone is GSM900 AND GSM1800

Most operators with a dual network (900/1800) only use the 1800 section in dense areas where the GSM900 network has reached it's capacity.

Well thats no good... Hehe :D....

If you're buying the MPX, find out what GSM Provider offers the best service in your area..... Then just get a pre-paid SIM, or port your number from SPrint and swap SIMS....

Well thats no good.

Actually, I've had good experiences with this phone, and Sprint. I've had it for 2+ years now. I just want a new phone with the ability to be used internationally.

My client, Auna (Retevision) has been running a nationwide, all-1800 network for nearly five years. They recently acquired some 900 spectrum in some kind of incestuous swap with other companies that picked the carcass of a failed 3G operator.

I checked, and there are still fairly large parts of their network running on GSM900, plus; theiy didn't reach full coverage till 4 years ago, not 5. Even when they claimed they had "full" coverage it was only a small part of the population, as they didn't go live till Jan 1999 and of course it's impossible to built a full coverage in just a year. With a GSM1800 only phone in Spain there will still be some areas (especially in rural areas) where it will be GSM900 only.

Besdies that, Auna is their fixed network, Internet and TV arm, the wireless division is called Amena (formerly known as Retevision).

Mobile networks are like camcorders, they keep changing names, but at least with mobile networks you can find what they used to be called.

I just noticed that this thread is about the mpx pocket PC, not the mpx220. Oops. I'll leave my initial post below in case anyone is interested in buying the 220 tho. Sorry for being OT.

If you do decide to go with the mpx220, be aware of the sound issues and the lousy camera. I don't say this to discourage you -- I have one and I love it. I think it's a great phone.

The bad things are that unless you set the profile on "outdoor" you can't hear the other person when you're on a call. Also the ring volume is too soft. The camera is absolutely horrid; I can't believe it's 1.2 MP. It seems worse than the camera on my old T616.

All that being said, I had the option of returning it after a 15 day trial which ended on Halloween. I decided to keep it. I love every other feature of the phone, and one great unpublished benefit is the incredibly strong antenna strength. It also fits in my pocket than other comparable phones. I was debating between the mpx220 or a Treo and I'm glad I went with this. I personally prefer Windows Mobile over Palm OS any day, and I like how it syncs with Outlook.

I got mine from Best Buy for $349 on a one year Cingular contract. It would have been less with a $50 rebate but that was only for new Cingular customers and I was just upgrading my phone. Oh, and Cingular is selling the phone unlocked. It's the only phone they have that is unlocked (so I'm told). I'm not sure how much they'll charge you if you don't want Cingular and just buy the phone outright....

ScottC you really are knowledgable on the subject of cellular phones. Is it related to your profession or is it just a super-mega hobby?

50/50.

It's my hobby, and in my job I recommend these devices to my clients, plus I write reviews for several large magazines.
