Most Hiltons slip a bill under your door in the wee hours of the morning before check-out. Sometimes I've left real early without going to the desk to check out (e.g., 4AM) and don't really want a bill stuck under my door that the cleaning personnel can pick up. Or worse, I've come back to my room early in the morning and there's the bill -- not stuck under the door INTO the room, but hanging out in the hallway for anyone passing to pick up!
What's the best way to get properties not to do this but still get a copy of the folio for my records? (I've asked them to not do this at several places, they just keep doing it)

Duct tape between the bottom of the door and the floor.

The hotels do not seem to be concerned about leaving the bills for everyone to see. I guess your address is there, otherwise not much that could be used against you...unless you watched one of those movies. ;)

Ask at the desk to hold your bill for you.

My husband recently stayed at 9 different hotels this summer and requested that the Bill not be placed under the door.
Only 1 hotel did not do it. According to the hotels they are not set up to acomodate this request there rules are such that a bill is to go under everyones door. The front desk clerk that managed to accomplish this did so with great effort.
He was staying at 8 Hampton's and 1 Fairfield on a trip with our son. It was a Hampton that successfully witheld the Bill at the desk for pick up.

I usually don't mind the bill under the door, although it sometimes startles me. What I don't like is they started putting that sticker, specifically Hampton Inn, to keep it closed. That stupid sticker sticks to all my other receipts in my folder and just ticks me off. I know fold it over but you have to do it perfect.

how about booking for one extra night and then "check out early" on the day you really want to leave?

That Hampton sticker has a special gummy stick-um. if you take just a few extra seconds it peels right off without tearing the receipt. :) I'm 8 for 8 in the last month!
I like the bill-under-door so i can just take off after breakfast, and avoid a potential line of people.

Even then, why sweat it? Nobody will know if you watched Dirty Nymphos 8 or something much more demure. We all know that actual titles don't appear on the bill. ;)

Its not so much the ones under the door that are the problem, but rather the ones left on the floor outside the door or hanging on the door. :td:

:)I thought it was now routine for a hotel to charge a penalty (a significant fraction of the daily rate) if you check out early... :(

From my experience this only occurs on significantly discounted rates, such as those made through a convention housing office. I’ve never had this happen at a Hilton property with a standard booking.

The Toronto Airport Hilton tried very hard to charge me $50.00 for leaving a day earlier than my reservation stated. I had to speak with the manager to get it waved, and she was very uppity about it. That was about 5 years ago, so they might be nicer now?
With regards to the bill under the door, I totally agree that they shouldn't do it. The bill has your home address. Anyone can grab it and see that you are away from home, and target your house for theft. It is totally amazing that hotels still do this.
And I am equally amazed at the number of hotels where the maid will let you in the room while they are cleaning without making you prove that it is your room by putting your key in the door. It is amazing that the hotels still allow this to happen.
At least the front desk clerks are finally requiring ID to issue a new room key. It was amazing that they didn't used to do that!

Well, I'm usually pretty aware of these things but the bill under the door with the address never occured to me.
I think changing the billing address from my home to my work address would solve this.
And to think that I was really annoyed with another hotel (Comfort Inn) when they would NOT put a bill under my door and expected me to wait in line for 10 minutes each time I tried to check out.

Just my opinion, but I'd bet that the sorts who are cruising the hotel corridors for hotel receipts aren't the type with easy access to long-distance transportation. And I don't believe that there's some nefarious underworld of ne'er-do-wells who will transmit my out-of-town status to their PA brethren so they can drop in on my wife while I'm away...

Obviously suffering from a case of hypo-paranoia. I totally agree with you. For someone to pick up you adreess at 5 am and get someone to your house seems a lot of work for a cheap stereo.

You have far more to be worried about if you place a 'name and address' tag on your luggage. The risk that a baggage handler at your local airport passes on your details to a local buddy, knowing you are leaving town, is 100x greater than the risk of someone in a town a long way away getting your address, passing it to a buddy in your town and then taking the risk that he can clean you out before you get home.

You could always cruise down the hall as you're headed down to check-out, and peruse all the rates other people are paying. If you find a good one that's lower than yours, make a mental note of the guest's name and go to the front desk and say, "I'm a friend of Joe Blow who's also staying here, and I'm ticked he got a much better rate than me. I think you should change mine to that rate too, especially since we're here together." ;)
I wonder if that's every been tried before? :)

LOL I love this idea!! I think I will head out soon as I would guess the bills will be delivered within the next hour or so. :)

I always set the alarm for 2am so I can squinch down at the door and when the bill comes I flick it right back out at 'em..... :D
Roll up one of your bathroom towels and place it along the crack at the bottom of the door, just like you would if there were a fire and there was smoke coming into your room. I have done this before and it makes it impossible for them to stick the bill under the door. In my experience you will find the bill waiting at the front desk for you in the morning.

I never use my home address for anything public, such as hotels, etc. I use a PO box. The world doesn't need a path to my door, just a way to contact me. About a year ago I was in the hospital and had a run-in with a nurse. I complained big-time to the administration. I was certainly glad that I didn't give my home address on any of my hospital papers, just the PO box. Otherwise, the nurse would have had a direct path to my door. He was fired, so he would have had reason to seek me out. Not saying he would, just best he didn't have my address. After all, I don't have his address. I'm not paranoid, just cautious in a oftentimes crazy world.
Off-topic but I couldn't resist replying that I went to the hospital for an outpatient procedure once. The staff absolutely, positively refused to accept a PO Box. I explained I was between apartments, but the clerk insisted that she could not go forward with the paperwork unless I supplied an actual street address.

If you go to http://people.yahoo.com and enter your name and the city and state of your PO Box, does it show your home address? If it does, you are in trouble.

Give your work address. Or if you don't have one, just make something up (the illegal aliens coming into public county hospitals to get free care routinely typically do that, e.g., something like 123 4th Street, Los Angeles -- no one bothers to check the validity of the address at check-in, it's just something to satisfy the clerks and bureaucrats). Then when you leave ask to have the bill mailed to your P.O. box.

The premise of the original post on this thread is just too bizarre for me. I can't believe there are people actually trying to AVOID getting their bill under the door. As far as I'm concerned, not having to check out in person is one of the great innovations of modern travel.

I agree many people do like this feauture. Some people however do not. For whatever reason it may be. It would be nice if people who asked that it not appear, have their wishes respected.
I always like to get it as I can check over the bill to ensure it is correct. However, my husband when he is travelling alone prefers not to get it (If I'm travelling with him I get my way).
To you and I, it might be a small thing but to him it is something that bothers him, especially when he asks that it not be delivered and the next morning it is under his door.
I do not think he has tried the towel trick yet. I'll have to mention it to him, wonder if the bill would be waiting at the front desk or in the hall. :)
