I've heard conflicting information on whether it's typical for Bangkok ATMs to charge fees. Can someone please straighten me out? :o

Please note, I'm only talking about fees imposed by the ATM, not from the "home bank".

Thank you.

I think some do and some don't. Those that do will let you know (via a message on screen) - e.g. for me, it was UOB Radanasin that wanted to charge me a fee. I pressed the Cancel button with alacrity, went over to the next ATM (Bangkok Bank) and it did not charge fees. For that matter, my bank at home (BoA) does not charge fees either if you keep under x number of transactions.

I have used my U.S.A. (Fleet now Bank of America) ATM card in Thailand quite a few times at many ATMs (SCB, Bangkok Bank, Thai Military, Krung Thai, Bank of Ayudhya, Thai Farmers ). I have never been charged a local fee, but BofA does charge me $5 USD per withdrawal. I rarely use this option having opened a local account.

I have used my ATM card at almost all the local banks' ATMs and have never been charged a fee from the ATM, just the S$5 fee for each withdrawal from my home bank in SIN.

FWIW, I have not been charged the ATM fee at UOB Radanasin ATMs either, but my ATM card is issued by UOB Singapore, so I don't know whether they charge ATM fees for other banks.

Just some info for those holding the DBS or POSB ATM cards in Singapore and using them to withdraw cash in Indonesia, Thailand and Philippines:

Your POSB ATM card is the only Card you'll need for worldwide access to your bank account. You can use your card overseas at:

Over 900,000 Cirrus ATMs
Over 10 million Maestro retail outlets

Please note:
1. There’s a charge of S$5 per cash withdrawal on overseas Cirrus ATMs. You will enjoy a preferential flat service fee of S$2 if you use your new ATM Card at the ATMs of Bank Internasional Indonesia and Bank Danamon (Indonesia), Bank of Philippines Island (Philippines) and Thai Danu Bank (Thailand).

2. The amount withdrawn in foreign currency at overseas Cirrus ATMs or purchases made in foreign currency at Maestro terminals will be converted to S$ equivalent using the bank's preferential rate of exchange.
