I'll be going to Hong Kong and Manila for the first time early next month and have no idea what kinds of clothes to pack. Are jeans too casual for a woman? Are casual slacks OK? Or should I pack skirts?

Any and all advice gratefully accepted.

Hong Kong will have no problems for jeans and t-shirt for women. Although being a Chinese city, Hong Kong people are deeply influenced by the West in terms of openness. So, you don't have to worry about dress code that much, unless you're in a fine hotel restuarant, then you'll need a lot more formal clothing.

Hong Kong is generally a dressier city than most US cities. You won't offend anyone if you wear jeans. However, you are likely to get more attentive service in shops and hotels if you are wearing smart-casual clothes as opposed to Gap jeans and a nondescript top. Slacks are perfectly ok, but you'll be happier when they're nice slacks with a well-coordinated top. People in HK will notice what how you look (not just clothing, but accessories and make-up as well).

Make sure to bring plenty of cool clothes, especially for Manila. It is quite hot and humid.

Thanks for the help. Although I live in jeans except when it's necessary to dress up (working from home has its advantages!), I don't want to stand out in the wrong way.

Leaving for Hong Kong tomorrow, then on to Manila next week. Since the tendonitis in my feet is acting up again, the only shoes I can wear comfortably for walking around are my white Etonic runners. Will I be out of place if I wear these with casual slacks or jeans? I have a pair of black Reebok walking shoes, but they're not as comfortable when my feet hurt.

Hong Kong should be cool right now so being a sweater or two.
Manila is always HOT and HUMID, so bring comfy clothes. In terms of jeans vs. dresses, depends if you are going for work or vacation. If you are on vacation, Jeans are just fine with running shoes unless of course you plan on visiting some fancy night clubs. I would say pack a dress or two especially for going out during evenings....Have a safe trip..

Thanks, Retired FF. Prediction for Hong Kong is low 80s, not what I call cool. :-)
