For members of IcelandAir's FFP, several US and European destinations. Any experience with this airline?

One of my colleagues flew them in business class last year BOS-ARN because it had the shortest travel time. He said the experience was "spartan" and compared more to domestic F than international service.

He didn't have any comments about coach, but I would expect everything to be scaled back accordingly.

Will you earn miles on these tickets? I can see that you must be a member of Customer Club Frequent Flyer but can you choose to put the miles elsewhere? Or dont you make any miles at all? SK EuroBonus will give you miles when you fly from BWI,BOS,MSP to KEF,OSL,ARN or CPH.

On the website it says no FF miles (not suprising given the extremely low price).

No miles are provided by Iceland Air but then again where would you go with them anyways- they only to Europe. You can mabye get miles on partner TWA but the service and seating would be roughly the same- just more blonde flight attendants around. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

I wonder if you would be able to get EuroBonus points for this trip. Afterall BOS-REK-ARN for instance is 7800miles RT.

Has anyone ever tried to redeem an award from any of Iceland Air's partners i.e. TWA and SAS? Is the award ticket reasonably priced as far as miles go? To me it seems that paying 20,000 miles and $225 for a one way(???) Iceland Air flight from the U.S. to select European destinations is a bit steep.

BTW, has anyone else noticed that Iceland Air's website is REALLY slow?

Some would even call it glacial!

I bought one of their 2 tickets for $380 Lucky Fare promotion that I think ends tonight... I didn't see much difference between this offer and the 2 tickets for $399.

I am hoping that TWA is still around when I complete my flight in late March so I can try to get Aviators/Advantage credit for the trip...

when i went to iceland last year, i gave them my aviators number, but didn't get any miles as it was on a lucky fare.

I HAVE FLOWN ICELAND AIR

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I flew on Iceland Air on my first-ever-transatlantic trip last summer.

The experience (in coach) was less than enjoyable. They use Keflavik Airport (in Reykjavik the capital of Iceland) as their hub. Flights come in from different European points of origin - then refuel - and head of on their merry way to different US destinations. I flew CPH-KEF (if Keflavik is called that, not sure) and than KEF-JFK.

The service was like on SAS with the difference that they spoke a ... hmm ... questionable quality of English. Several Swedes and Danes flew on both flights and many - like I, although I never admitted as much - gave up trying to understand the pseudo-English words coming from the cockpit and the FAs.

Points are earned for all flights if you member of their FF club. As a member of EuroBonus you get points on flights between select cities (e.g. CPH-KEF) but NEVER between Iceland and any US cities. The points earned on Iceland Air in EuroBonus are extra points and thus do not count toward status.

A side comment: On my return I had a six hour gab between the arrival of the flight from the US (about 6am) and the flight to CPH. I spent this at the marvelous Blue Laguna - quite relaxing. The taxi cost about 100 USD return but actually it's worth it! (entrance costs about 10 USD).

A final remark: I find that the Iceland Air FAs are very strange. I do not understand them - they remind me of something taken out of a SAGA from around 1000 A.D. The people of Iceland are likewise strange - stranger than the people of Norway and perhaps even stranger than the people of Finland. (As you might gather now I find all people from the North strange except Danes and Swedes - I am half Dane and half Swede...) http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

This is not correct. Flying IcelandAir(FI) from REK you earn points to Minneapolis(MSP),Boston(BOS),Orlando(MCO) and Washington(BWI). You are correct that you dont earn any EuroBonus points to JFK with IcelandAir.

I have flown to Iceland with them to and from BOS and found they were very high standard. Iceland is one of the world's wealthiest countries per capita due to the massive revenues from North Sea fishing and their 200 mile zone. The cities and airline are to that standard. The COST of doing anything in Iceland is terrifying. A cab for 5 minutes costs about $25! A meal with wine in a restaurant needs an overdraft to pay for it. Wonderful friendly people I found at least.

As to:

This is not strictly correct ... they fly to Greenland, (which I guess is in "Europe" but is more accurately the Arctic!) which was one of THE most fascinating trips of my life. They also fly this from the downtown Rejykavik airport - so not only Keflavik as quoted above which is WAY out of town. They also of course fly domestically from city airport ..... a trip to the southerly Westermann Islands is a MUST.

You can use the points for Hotel stays in Iceland or all over Europe .... which cost a fortune otherwise, so the points are not useless if kept in Icelandair.

I'm glad that somebody has had a different experience with Icelandair than I did. However, I take it that you flew in C? Coach was terrible and I cannot imagine anyone disagreeing - the headphones were ancient for crying out loud!

Goldlust. 50/50 .. talked my way somehow into an upgrade on one of the transatlantic legs, other was coach. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

They seem to offer THE cheapest fares to Europe pretty often, and a stopover at an interesting place like Iceland is a massive bonus to a LEISURE traveller who enjoys visiting the world as I do. For a business traveller, I can see these fares are not worth considering, but around $200 each is pretty darn good, and they used to fly out of some wacky places like Minneapolis as well, making the deal even more attractive.

First of all - I am a leisure traveller myself, and I always enjoy new places - as I thought my post showed, I really liked to stop in Keflavik:

A side comment: On my return I had a six hour gab between the arrival of the flight

In other words I do think we agree pretty much. Why do you think I flew them in the first place? Suddenly I wanted to leave for a month of improvised US vacation and their fare was the cheapest my agent could find.

However, I don't want to use them again if I don't have to due to 1) My above stated opinion on their service etc. 2) I cannot get any status points from them into * or OW.

Secondly - and much more important - how did you get the upgrade? Please tell!

Mind explaining why you refer to my hometown so perjoratively? My guess is that you haven't been here.

Goldlust - Asked sweetly, and was prety persuading. We both got it, and had never flown them before. (Didn't work on way back tho.) http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

BoSoxFan ... so no offence intended about MSP itself. (We flew there once on mileage run from here just to shop the Mall when Gold on NW!) Was saying that seeing ICE (?) only flew to a VERY few places in the USA it was a less than obvious one (if in fact they still do) and as there is limited It'l direct choice ex MSP to Europe it was a darn good deal for those there. Like you. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
