I only travel with carry-on - a 21" roller that fits all AA aircraft (even the MD80) and a computer briefcase. I am planning a J fare from YYZ to BKK on the 343 and then a 747 there and 777 BKK to HKG. Will these two bags be OK as carry on in J?

The rules are here: http://www.cathaypacific.com/intl/pretrip/baggage/0,,,00.html
You are OK on size and number of items. They don't often check the weight, but officially it's 22lbs for the rollaboard and a further 9lbs for the laptop bag. Thius is where you might have a problem. In principle you would be allowed a further 9lb if carried separately as a "briefcase".

Generally ex-Canada flights' carry-on allowance is not dictated by CX but rather the respective airports' security. Ex-YVR security are pretty strict at times and even when I carried the same bag from HKG to YVR without any problems, I have had terse comments between YVR Sceurity staff and meself about the size of carry on luggage. They finally let me on....

I guess leaving YYZ then would mean not a lot of contact with YVR security.

I did say ex-Canada.
I was only giving ex-YVR as an example because I don't live in YYZ but you do. You'd be the best person to gauge whether ex-YYZ security will let you through with your bags. If you flew ex-T3 in YYZ on AA and security there let you through for your last flights, maybe when you fly on CX which also departs from T3, that the security there *might* let you through too?

I don't think the security at T3 cares one way or the other judging by the canoe-sized carry-on I see ahead of me sometimes. Of course that is the post USA pre-clearance security, I haven't flown via regular security, but my daughter has for Westjet and her backpack, computer bag and large purse and din't get a sideways glance.
