My boss is so lucky. Verizon just installed fiber optic up to her driveway so she can get up to 100Mbps Internet when the times call for it. For now, it's limited to 30 Megs download and 5 Megs upload, no doubt so they will have headway to "upgrade" their service. This is in Keller, TX. Here is the letter she got:
--------------[Main letter]---------------
[Verizon logo]

This is the quickest way to tell you about the fastest, most revolutionary Internet service we've ever offered.

[Horizontal Rule]

Dear XXXXX XXXXX,

Life around Keller is about to change in a big way. That's because we've harnessed the power of fiber optics in a way that's going to revolutionize your online experience. It's called Verizon Fios(sm) Internet Service. And you could be one of the first in Keller, not to mention the entire country, to have it.

Now that information travels on light waves, you'll do everything faster.
With Fios fiber optic technology, you'll do everything you do now online, only much faster. You'll also have some new experiences including digital movie downloads, video chat and multiplayer games. Combine that with phone service (and a host of other services yet to be released) and Fios may be the only connection you'll ever need.

It's not only fast, it's just $44.95 a month.
In addition to blazing connection speeds up to 15 Mbps, Fios gives you MSN Premium with virus protection, parental controls, pop-up blocker and more -- all for the great low price of just $44.95 a month with a qualifying Verizon package. And, if you call now, we'll install your new service absolutely free.

Demand will be high. Better reserve your connection date today.
Keller's already buzzing about Fios. And a lot of folks can't wait to get their hands on the new service. That's why it's important you take a moment and call 1 888 xxx-xxxx (Mon.-Fri., 8am-6pm) to reserve your installation date as soon as possible. We'll have specially-trained Verizon technicians come to your home and hook up your router and main computer at no extra cost.

Excited to get going? Call us. We'll take care of everything else.

Sincerely,

[Signature]

Brian Angiolet
Director of Marketing

PS: Switch to Verizon Fios and see broadband in a whole new light. Just call 1 888 xxx-xxxx (Mon.-Fri., 8am-6pm) and reserve an installation time and date.

---------------[End]---------------

I called Verizon and got more information:
-If you don't have a qualifying verizon package, the service is $5 more per month. One qualifying package is local phone service for $25/mo.
-5 Mbps is either $35 or $40 per month.
-Upload is 2/2/5 Mbps for the 5/15/30 Mbps service, respectively.

I'm so jealous.

And here's the website...

http://www22.verizon.com/Foryourhome/fios/fioshome.asp?promotion_code=&variant=

$45 for 2 up/15 down service, or $200 for 5 up/30 down service. Quite the premium for almost double the bandwidth.

My BIL had Fiber ito his development way back when down in the Atlanta area. Nobody ever supported it and they never finished the project. He was stuck in ISDN world until they got copper to his place.

SNET had fiber cable all over my part of Connecticut, the deal was you get your TV and itnernet all over the fiber, one day telephone too. Spent a fortune rolling it out, got sued because it was too heavy for the phone poles, now the system isn't connected to anything.

I wouldn't be the house on Fiber. I think it's great, just it's past history hasn't been great.

cordelli, thanks for the insight. Hopefully the time has finally come for this to become widespread.

I'm pretty sure Verizon considers the small town of Keller a project so they wouldn't lose a ton of money if this didn't work out. I'm pretty sure they removed the old phone lines while they were laying the fiber, so it better work!

Who cares if you get 30MB at home if the pipe to Flyertalk is only 1MB shared?

I hate your boss. :(

In other news, I'm now in my fifth week of waiting for Telefonica to come hook up my $90/month, 256K DSL connection.

As Doris Day used to sing: (8) Que sera, sera...whatever will be, will be! (8)

(FWIW, I'm really enjoying my $44.95/month 4000/400 DSL connection...)

There's an interesting forum on this at broadband reports (http://www.dslreports.com/forum/fiberoptics).

The most compelling feature of this is for $44.99 per month you'll have both the bandwidth and the right in the usage t&c to operate an actual server.

And, the big boys like Comcast will have some competition.

The people on this forum (http://www.dslreports.com/forum/fiberoptics) usually know such things before it becomes public, search for your state and/or city.
