I will be renting at YVR in 10 days and will be travelling with my 13 lbs 3.5 month old daughter. I have not requested carseats for her till now.
1) Does Hertz charge extra for carseats?
2) Is it worth taking your own carseat even if its FREE from Hertz?
Thanks

Contact the location directly and ask - Hertz.com will say "sure, 100% not a problem" but if you call the location directly they may be honest and tell you that the seats they have are garbagy and need replacing - in that case you will be better in bringing your own.

It will probably cost you over $50 for the seat for the 10 days. I decided to travel with my own seat on my trip to PBI next month.
I own a Marriott timeshare through Interval International. They recently sent me a PC code for a free child seat. PC# 945302, CDP# 81957. You may want to try the code, but they may request an Interval International membership card when you get there. Say you left it home??
I didn't use the code because the CDP code for my Amex gives me a bigger discount than the one above.

Hi there,
AAA also has a coupon for a free car seat for weekly (or more) rentals. If you don't use such a coupon, I think Hertz policy in the US is a maximum of 50$ per rental.(8-9$/day). It could be similar in Canada.
In the past, Hertz has given me the best infant seats (compared to Avis and National). 2 months ago, at SJC, Hertz gave me a brand new car-seat.
You'd do well to put the car-seat request in the reservation. They do sometimes run out of them.
One more point: Everytime i requested a car seat, I was given a front-facing one (for toddlers). I had to then request an infant seat, which was arranged in about 10 minutes. I'd suggest calling Hertz CS and making them annotate the reservation with the "infant" seat request.
Good luck...

Yes, it is worth taking your own carseat - no matter what. Don't get the rental car companies the opportunity to screw this up leaving you stranded at an airport trying to figure out where to find a carseat. Or the correct type of carseat for your kid. Or a nonskanky carseat. Or one that isn't broken. Or one that can be installed into the type of car you rented. You get the drift...
We rented a carseat once at MCO. If any agency on Planet Earth has a robust, well-tested, efficient, seamless process for handling carseats, you'd think it would be MCO. I won't tell the long story, but it was a two hour fiasco ending in a couple of car changes, a carseat change, an installation nightmare, and finally - going over to National to rent the car.
Take your own carseat and attempt to rent a car similar to your own, if possible. If you can't rent what you drive at home, rent a generic full-size sedan. Tauri work great with the two types of seats (the under-16-pound seat and the 16-60 pound seat) we've traveled with so far.

Also, if it's going to run 50.00 or more, buying one at Walmart when you get there and leaving it with a friend (or whatever) is also an option.... :)

This thought has crossed my mind before - but the logistics of pulling this off have never been possible on any of my travels. A lot of stuff would have to happen perfectly to make this a time-efficient process.
But if it does - say you were already planning on arriving an hour before your wife/kid, and you know for sure there is a nearby Wal-Mart, and you know the traffic patterns in and around the airport very well - it might be the best option.

Rear-facing seats: I bought the frame stroller so the seat just snaps in. You can leave the stroller in the jetway with the seat or take the seat with you if you bought a seat for the infant on the plane.
Front-facing seats: I've always brought my own because you never know how the rental seat will fit and there's no reason to pay $50 or more extra for the rental.
FYI: This site (http://www.inventiveparent.com/state-laws.htm) lists all state car seat laws.
