My understanding is that you have to fly direct when a direct flight is available. In your case, I suspect that NZ would sting you for two awards and treat your flights as two sectors. I know that UA let me make a redemption booking SYD-AKL-CHC, though that was a couple of years ago (before the new *A chart).
