I'd imagine that this person will be "fined" some of his miles or even terminated from the DM program because of this auction. It's of course against the rules to sell miles.

that person may receive the money for the miles, however, he'll NEVER get them transferred from his account to another account.
hmmm, there IS a way he could get this done legally but i won't go into details. i think i'll forward the ebay bid to someone who works in DM.
thanks for posting this! ^

Like maybe offer tickets anywhere US flies based on award availability. Once auction is complete, book DM tickets in winning bidders name...

I would never auction miles but I AM curious why you feel obligated to forward the information to someone who works in DM. Are you a US Airways employee?
Although I do not approve of the auction, I would be of the position - Don't ask, don't tell. Since the auction does not affect me personally, I would leave it to the corporate world to resolve any issues that they may have.
What would other people do?

I wouldn't turn that person in. It's also kinda hypocritical considering the trades we do here...however we justify it. I have no issues at all with our CC, I find it a valuable resource, as I do the information on this forum that allows us to buy $60 return airfares to Greenland, GBP1 (or whatever) TG F tickets from London to BKK and SGD2000 LH F tickets from SIN to LHR...Miles outstanding are a known and calculated liability of the individual airlines, those deals we pass around aren't (thereby probably negatively impacting the airline's P&L, however minimal).
Anyway, the point is that we should keep a perspective on things.

It seems to me that there are a lot more people attempting to sell their US miles on eBay than there have been in the past. I guess that some are trying to get rid of their miles by whatever means possible. A current search of "US Airways Miles" returns two active auctions, and a search of completed auctions returns 12 results, of which eight auctions were actually successful.

Gotta agree with RunawayNFly on this one - why do you feel obligated to forward this to someone who works in DM? Unless you personally are affected by this or you work for US, why bother reporting someone who is just trying to look out for themselves in a time of need? That's just sort of adding insult to injury, IMHO.
Editted to add - I just read a bunch of your other posts & it seems like you may be an employee or a res agent - in which case I understand your interest in reporting this - but I would wish you'd reconsider - your attitude could isolate you on this board - I know my opinion of you is tainted now & I'm sure others are too...live & let live, right?

If the poster works for US Air, she has an obligation to report incidents such as the E-bay auction that are clearly against the rules of the Dividend Miles program. We may not like the rules that some of the FF programs have, but most of us are aware of them and agreed to them when we sign-up. Frankly, if the poster is a US employee, then I respect her action far more than if she had turned a blind eye to the situation.

And don't worry, they lurk on ebay, just like they do here and take a very dim few on the selling of miles.

I totally agree with this. I am a federal gov't employee and I know there is a number we are supposed to call should we be aware of fraudulent activities in or affecting the agency.

Well I hope no one turns us in here...or have they already?
I guess it's not ok to violate T&C on eBay but it's ok here.

If someone is violating the rules somewhere on FT let Randy know. Although the House of Miles seems to be pretty proactive about such stuff they could always use a "heads up".
FWIW I, personally, haven't seen any attempts to do such stuff in this forum last much longer than the 2 minutes it takes for the moderators to shut it down.

What do you mean? the bartering of miles and tickets? other non-transferrable, non-saleable and non-barter items? go take a look at the CC. Almost every other item violates the T&Cs (in spirit if not letter) of most airlines, hotels or other issuer.
As for me, as I mentioned before, I think CC is a valuable resource, etc., but I wanted to bring up the double standards alot of FTers hold.

Buying cheap airline tickets is not a violation of the terms and conditions of an airline program that you've signed up for. Selling of miles and buying cheap tickets are two different things that shouldn't even be compared.

Of course this was going to happen...
I wrote that in to show how those particular instances had a heavier financial impact on the bottom line of the airlines whereas the private sale of miles, which had an accounted for liability, did not.
Ok whatever, go report. Report the frequent violations that happen on this forum. If you are really concerned with rules and T&Cs being followed and enforced, this is what you need to do.
We have made our beds and have to sleep in it. That's ok with me.

I don't see how a low fare would have a bigger impact on the bottom line than mile redemption.
US would much rather someone buy a low fare for a seat that would have otherwise gone empty, than have someone redeem miles for it. US makes no money off of award redemption, but does make some money off of fares, even low ones.

these fares were mistakes/glitches in the system that people took advantage of. ..GBP1 (or whatever) fares in F from London to Bangkok, US60 from the States to Greenland, etc...

While miles sales have increased it seems that the price people are willing to bid for upgrades has significantly decreased.
