US Airways Dividend Miles (Pre-FlightFund Merger) - Seeking Fortune Teller, Crystal Ball... Will my vacation be liquidated?

I have read just about all of the 1 million+ posts about the US Air Chaper 11 filing. I know the airline could liquidate at any time and it is impossible to tell if or when this may happen.

During a big spring air sale I purchased 5 r-t tickets on US for BOS-PHL-STT to leave February 16, 2005 and return March 2, 2005 (if I had only known!) This is just barely in the 6 month window. I bought the tix through the US website and put them on my credit card. I am not a frequent flyer (I only fly about twice per year) so I am seeking your opinion.

If you were going to put money on it would guess that my flight would be safe (either US will still be running or another carrier will buy my route) or do you think I will lose it all? The 60 days will be up on my credit card and the provision in the law offering protection expires in November.

This is a family vacation that my 3 children are looking forward to and I am considering buying tickets on another, non-bankrupt, carrier if I see a good sale. So tell me, what would you do?

I am a medium-scale flyer and am liquidating (using) my miles soon and not investing any more cash into paid tickets. I seriously think their time has come and I predict just after the holidays that the sh11t starts to hit the fan and it is all over. I am suggesting all my friends/family do the same. I am serious here and am not just trying to scare you.

Thanks for the advice. Problem is I already purchased the tickets - and they were nonrefundable. Would you just assume the airline was going to liquidate and go forward and purchase new tickets on another, more solvent carrier? My reasoning would be to try to find a reasonable fare and not have to pay top dollar at the last minute. I really don't want to cancel the whole trip. :(

My only hope is that someone may pick up the Caribbean route - is this just a pipe dream?

It's great being able to vent on this forum!

If you bought your ticket with a Credit Card. Most CC companies will refund your money if US were to go to Ch 7. Call yours to find out.

Thanks US Air Fan.

I will give them a call. It would be great to get a refund if they go Chapter 7.

Any predictions about 6 months out? Do you think the Caribbean route will be saved?

In the event of liquidation, another airline may buy the route(s). However, outside of a US buyout, they would be under no obligation to honor your US ticket. They would be merely purchasing the rights to fly between the cities involved.

Unfortunately, timing could still work against you. If US goes Ch 7 close to your departure date, any refund received by the credit card may not cover the costs of reticketing your vacation.

If you see a good sale, you may want to protect yourself by purchasing the tickets on a more stable airline. The cost of a short notice fare, in the event of a US liquidation may exceed the original ticket cost and credit card refund combined.

An option that would be cheaper than buying new tickets would be to pay the change fee and move your vacation to early Dec. US will likely still be flying and you wouldn't have to throw away your existing tickets to ensure you get there.

Predictions are like opinions are like... well, you know. :)

Nobody - even US and any airline interested in their assets and routes - has any real clue what the future will bring. The only concrete thing that you can base a decision on is your own personal sense of risk. If you think they can make it, then act accordingly. Same if you think they can't. We're all just whizzing into the wind, here. Some of us have more experience or insight that might lend more credence or weight to our opinions, but even the pundits and the analysts are contradicting themselves daily. *shrug*

My understanding is that the federal Fair Credit Act only protects purchases made for flights no longer than 60 days out.

Lots of different answers out there on this - and lots of good info on the many US Air threads. Some of it seems to depend on the credit card.

There is really nothing I can do at this point - I guess I will just continue with my plans (jeep rental etc...) and hope for the best. Luckily most of my resvervations can be cancelled up to 24 hours in advance - let's just hope they don't decide to liquidate on the eve of my depature - or while I am in the caribbean with 3 kids!

I just keep trying to remember there are bigger problems in the world besides *my* vacation!
