Is this a cab ride from DCA? or real far?
US AIRWAYS FAN

It is about a 15 minute cab ride. But if you want to be a real cockroach you could take the metro from DCA. Get on the yellow line towards Huntington and get off at the Huntington stop. http://www.wmata.com/metrorail/systemmap.cfm
The metro stop is not too far down the road from Kryspy Kreme. One of us can come get you as it is right down the street from the KK store.
Not only is it 4 very short metro stops from DCA. It is probably faster than a cab.
The metro will cost you less than 2 dollars while a cab will cost you around 15 to 18 dollars. Trust me the metro is faster.

Probably 2 miles at tops. But I don't think it is even that. 5 to 7 minute drivve. Not that far by car. But I would not walk it.

Important Update!!!
After the US Airways chat tonight, Barry Biffle and John Reistrup came over and joined the DC FT happy hour gang at the Key Bridge Marriott. They kindly gave me 24 bright yellow GoFares hats to hand out at this event. So the first 24 people who sign up to come to Krispy Kreme will each get a GoFares hat. Sign up today as the 25th person to sign up, unfortunately, will not get a hat.
So Barry, did I do a good job of announcing this?

I'd bring you a donut or two that morning at DCA so you wouldn't feel totally left out but I am actually arriving at BWI at 9 AM after having spent Saturday out in San Francisco (going out there Friday afternoon). This brings up the point that I may be a little tired at Krispy Kreme (sugar will hopefully fix this), which btw, will be my second FlyerTalk-related event of the weekend. magic111, who I've met at a few FT gatherings, has kindly organized a dinner with the San Francisco FT folks for me. I got a CB less than 5 minutes from my house (at Exit 9, WV I-77). Too bad you have to wait an hour to get in that place during peak meal times, since all the northerners going south stop there thinking they're getting "real" Southern food. :p Many of my former students have worked there... Wings are just the tip of the iceburg up there. The Buffalo/Western New York area has one of the country's best Polish, German and Italian populations. For example, a Friday night Buffalo Fish Fry is unmatched anywhere else.
One of the things I miss living below the Mason-Dixon in West by God Virginia is the lack of any good food (I'm not counting Southern CB-style food here). Once you get south of Charleston and into coal country here, I swear the taste buds were removed in the people. I'm not saying there's nothing here (but the usual fast food), but nothing like I'm used to in the north. We do have an excellent authentic Mexican place and a couple of satisfactory Chinese places in our town, and an excellent local seafood place in Wytheville VA 45 minutes away. We don't have a good Italian place however (not counting Pizza the Hut or Cici's), nor a good sub (Subway doesn't count) or other ethnic food place. Good rye bread or real bagels are non-existant.
Also, KKs are imported (back on topic here) from the GSO and/or CRW area and sold at various convenience store outlets, but no Dunkin' Donuts or other northern type bakeries. We've had several come in and try to sell "real" donuts here to them and fail, as the southerners here don't understand the concept since they don't sell biscuits.
I lived in Durham for about 3 years in the late 80s. The only thing I miss from there (food wise) is having a nearby Bojangles. Someone used to have a franchise with 3 stores in Beckley about 10 years ago, but replaced them with Hardees (post fried chicken).
If the timing were right, I'd definitely be game for a weekend meeting in Buffalo. We could do lots of shopping and eating :) !! (Neither really good for me at the moment. :( )

I was in IAD for a fwe hot minutes yesterday--- long enough to remember why IAD is such a pain.
Then went to Shoppers with a friend, where every checkout line had no fewer than 8 people.
Traffic on the beltway surprisingly was a snap. Had very forgettable Mexican food in Reston :p but it was fun to see a couple old friends.
They're trying to talk me into coming to DC again soon. With the weather about to turn, it may be better for them to fly out here. ;)

My profound apologies for missing the donut festival. I had a minor mishap on my sailboat that prevented me from going anywhere. And for all those inquiring minds, longing4piedmont left DC with three boxes of Tastykakes. Speaking of which, at the Saturday dinner in San Francisco, I mentioned that I was getting together the next day (meaning yesterday) with the US flyers at Krispy Kreme. They said, "Krispy Kreme?" So then I had to explain all about the writings in the US forum of Krispy Kremes and Tastykakes to them. Ok. I was going to give Alysia a chance to post a report first since it was her “do”, but since it is obvious that she is too tired after all the excitement to post, I will start it. You may want to tune in later to get the true and accurate version. ;)
Alysia picked me up after an uneventful flight up from GSO/CLT. I was in coach and did not get upgraded. It is obvious that Barry does read these forums but choose not to have me upgraded. Why I don’t know. I mean after all, I did wear my go fares hat and got lots of odd looks as a result of it, mostly from US employees who have never heard of go fares in GSO or CLT. It may have had something do with the fact it was a free ticket, but hey, who’s keeping score here. :D
Alysia and I then went down and had a great sandwich while watching the planes take off over our heads from DCA. Saw the * alliance 319 again. (The lady gets around as I’ve seen her now about six times.) Then off to the mall and the WWII memorial. Lots of security everywhere due to the IMF conference. Then on to KK. I sure am glad I didn’t walk it. Some folks on here need to learn distances.
Thanks to our friends at US, Alysia had managed to snag about 20 go fare hats for all who showed up. Attending were tribeflyer and friend, thezipper, US Airways Fan, freeflyer, Alysia and a special secret guest. Wahooflyer showed up late and claimed it was traffic. Funny how he smelled of taskykakes and did not eat a single donut. :p
Not sure how much longer tribeflyer is going to have her friend that she suggested to join us. He just looked at us like we were all nuts, and he is a Gold on US. Guess you do have to be certifiable to show up at one of these things. The zipper showed up as well and moderated all the discussions. Threaten to ban me when we started talking about certain people who have posted here before. Freeflyer is an Air Canada guy who came to offer advice on how to get an airline out of BK. Not sure he is going to take a walk on the dark side and join US. US Airways Fan has got to be the biggest supporter of US I have ever met. My guess he will make CP before the end of the year. Then we had a special guest. We all promised not to discuss who it was, what they did, or where they where from, but it was joy to have him/her there. Then there is Alysia. You should have seen the looks from all the families there when she dumped all the rum into her coke glass. Bet you’ve never seen that at a KK before. (Some of the above is true and I’ll let you decide what it is)
We basically just sat around and ate donuts. Then we came up with all the answers to US’s problems these days. Then we solved all of the problems with trolls on FT. Then we ate more donuts. Then we talked about US management. (Deb you came out real well on this one. Sorry Ben, you didn’t). Then we ate more donuts.
Four boxes were taken back to our friends working the gates at DCA and the ladies in the club. We hope you enjoyed them and we think you are the best……..You are the reason we still fly ya…….

Wahooflyer showed up late and claimed it was traffic. Funny how he smelled of taskykakes and did not eat a single donut. :p
That's why I have such a sly looking smirk on my face in l4pi's photos :D

It was a great time. But boy when I got home my stomach was in knots from all those donuts.
That would be something for the AM flights. Coffee and Kryspy Kreme donuts right out of the oven.
US management, maybe you guys could team up with KK? Everyone loves them :p
It was really great to meet all of you. I am looking forward in meeting you all again in the future.

Yep -- so you all, no more blaming SS255 for taking the Tastykakes.
Thank you! I'm vindicated! Enjoyed the pictures. Sorry I couldn't make it to the gathering. I thought it would be best not to "call in sick" :D on my first day w/a new boss so I could fly across the country to eat donuts with a bunch of bright-yellow-hat-wearing mileage nuts!

I just saw all the photos. I can't believe I basically ate an entire box of sugar! :p
Glad to see everyone made it home safely.
Today I am up in Toronto and it's FREEZING UP HERE. I don't know how the Canadians do it.

I was really glad I went, I had a great time meeting everyone at my first DC Flyertalk event. Like US Airways Fan, I had more than a few of those delicious treats, but am glad I worked off some of them walking back to the Huntington Metro station!
UAF, that should be "It's FREEZING up here, EH?" :p

OK Alysia has now posted her pictures from this event. Sorry it took so long but, well, lets just say all that rum had a lasting effect.

whew! finally figured out how to use this forum stuff... i think.
i liked the photo caption "future poster?"
... not exactly the same as a poster child! ha!
had a great time meeting you folks, and really enjoyed the discussion.
there are some other friends of tribeflyer (BIG fans of YX - MidwestAirlines)
who think I am nuts for my USAirways enthusiasm - including my 6-segment RT run PHL-MSY in late 2001 because I needed segments to make Chairmans
... and they really thought I was "out there" to go to your get-together at KK.
had a great time!
it was great to meet a group who shared my hobby of airline travel interest
... even if maybe, yes, you are "over the top"... but in a good way!
btw, "bobinspain" comes from my need to build a POP3 mail collector
using hotmail in 2000 to monitor my mail during a trip to Spain (and Morocco).
The name just stuck... and, whenever I use my e-mail, I can fondly recall
my excellent adventures in Spain.
That was my second time w/ KK. They are good, but probably
lots of fat grams... just guessing.
another btw, reading FT forums reminded me that I needed to follow up
on my fly3 get 1free... turned out the e-mail they had on file for me was
WAY old... so, now I have 2 eCerts to use! yea! (hope the website works)
so, yes, you are all WAY cool.
Hasta!

And finally a welcome to FT and the US forum. Hope to see you around on here and feel free to ask any of us a question on here or by Private Message (PM).
I can only hope you learn as much here as I have.

Nah...only people who actually flew up here for the day to eat donuts with us can be considered "out there" :D

I second this. I've gotten much more out of this site that I could ever possibly give back. I've gotten many more points & miles in my accounts, and more importantly, I've made new friends literally around the world and have gotten to go places and do things that I never would have done before.

Hey guys, I just posted a comment at the photos page.
Looks like all of you had fun!! Did KK replace the sign that blew down during last year's hurricane?
US AIRWAYS FAN, you should tell people you flew in from Spain just for the donuts. ;) And of course the US miles/experience.
Aside: DC folks know I was comped gold the other year-- but never experienced Envoy. Between changing work travel patterns, maintaining my other elite status, and relocating to the west, I didn't have occasion to fly US to Europe and I ended up redepositing the Envoy upgrades for 1k each--- yeah, there realy are some folks who have redeposited them. *ducks* But to my credit, I did fly a revenue domestic US flight 2 weeks ago. ;)

Hey Viajero Joven,
I have no idea about the sign. I live in Old Town and have really no reason to venture south on Rte 1 so I hardly ever go by Krispy Kreme.
And how about this...I actually planned an event where the place was open...unlike your going away party at that bar where I planned it on a Monday night only to arrive and find out that the bar is closed on Monday nights.

This photo was sent to me last week by one of the roaches on the left coast. I forgot to post it.
Please refrain from making comments about who resembles who. I am fairly sure however that I have dated the one with the big buns. :D
The 4 year-olds in my school's PreK just returned from a field trip to KK. I'm knocking down the young and weak among the faculty to hoard as many as I possibly can. Of course, it's not like I couldn't just go to KK myself some morning.
It's like the old HBO Ellen DeGenneres routine when she talks about the excitement of getting the bag-o-peanuts (see how old it is!) on the plane--not like they don't have peanuts back down on earth!
(That whole routine on flying was hysterical!! Paula Poundstone used to have a routine on flying that left me in tears as well!)

What is it about school administators and doughnuts? It's not like you don't get enough food at open houses and faculty meetings.
Hey, EB- If you, Geo1005 and Mrs. AtlanticBeach write to SSATB, maybe they'll put KKs on the breakfast menu at the Ritz Carlton next year. :p

We never have donuts actually; thus, the excitement. By the way, food at faculty meetings is boring. Food at faculty parties however... ^ ^
I think I shall drop Melanie a note! <lips smacking> She owes me for hosting it in PHL this year, darn it!

At least you live in areas that have KKs or donut shoppes. In Southern WV, biscuits are still the preferred breakfast food, unless someone stops at Walmart and gets their "pretend" KKs. :( Closest real donut shop is 40 miles away in Beckley (Dunkin Donuts). Any donut shop that's open since I've been here in '91 has closed up with 6 months.
Same goes for coffee. Starbucks on the turnpike, but nothing for the real locals unless you like regular coffee.
