This is the earliest I have ever done it. Went over with my LGW-CLT segment on Sunday. Of course they declared bankruptcy during my next segment, CLT-LGA. But I did qualify. Time to hope for the best at this point. I am booking tickets on US for next week and have already booked some for mid October. Ill credit the miles to UA but that is a function of still needing 48K miles to renew my 1K. I think the next 4-6 weeks will be telling. Hang in there US!

Congrats GadgetFreak. I will qualify for CP for the 1st time once my 10K preferred bonus for the Sig Visa posts. Anyone know how long it takes after spending the requisite $25K? That 10K will put me at 104000. I'm debating where to put my miles for the rest of the year -- UA or US. I might be able to hit 2P on UA, but doubtful as I don't travel much in the 4th quarter.

I understand it takes 4-8 weeks for the BOA miles to get transferred. The USAir desk has nothing to do with it.

Thanks JanePond. I never really paid attention before as they didn't affect my status like they will now. I really hope they post quickly as I would like to be a CP if anything happens at US. But, whatever will be will be.....

Doh! The BofA reference reminds me of my to do list:

1. Hit CP just in case - done
2. Pick new airline - not done
3. Get new affinity card - not done
4. Get status match from 2 above - not done

:(

Well, Im way ahead of you on #2 and #4. ;)

In early 2003 as a CP on US and a 1K on UA while both were in Ch 11 I got a status match on AA and flew at the Platinum level on them last year. Im planning on doing the same this year. I do need to get a good deal on an AA Mastercharge though, thanks for reminding me!

Like any airline, AA has it's ups and downs, but overall I think you'll be pleased with AA. I admit that I am biased, but hey, I like US too. :D

The only downside to AA IMHO, is their lack of a really solid domestic alliance like the one between US/UA other than their deal with AS. Great if you're on the west coast, not so great on the east.

Without a doubt. Considering US' precarious financial situation, I Challenged over to AA a couple of months ago as a backup airline and got Platinum status, equiv to US Gold, by flying 10,000 miles on selected fares within 90 days.

AA's route network on the East Coast is nowhere near as extensive as that of US, but since I fly mostly transcons (IAD-LAX in particular, which AA serves nonstop) the cities served suit me just fine. Lately I've been taking advantage of the dirt-cheap JFK-LHR fares on Site59.com, combined with an even cheaper IAD-JFK r/t on Independence Air, for budget weekend jaunts to London and lots of miles (close to 14,000 total for each roundtrip including 100% Platinum bonus).

And the First Class experience on AA's domestic routes is a zillion times better than F on US...hot meals even on 2-hour flights, real glass and cloth napkins, and more comfortable seats with adjustable headrests. Don't know how international J compares to Envoy as I've never flown US to Europe, but the "flagship" service from NY to London certainly lives up to its name. Was even op-upgraded on the return from LHR last Sunday as the flight was oversold...looked like most elites in coach were bumped up to business class.

Also of note: domestic upgrades on AA are not unlimited for Gold (low tier) and Platinum (midtier)---only for Executive Platinum (100,000 EQM+ per year) flyers. As a Platinum, you earn four 500-mile upgrades for every 10,000 miles flown. You can buy 500-milers for $25 each, though, which is a great deal compared to the $50 they cost on UA. I have been upgraded on all 12 AA segments I've requested an upgrade on so far this year...probably helps not to be based in a hub, as there aren't all that many AA elites in the Washington area.

So...go for the dAArk side. I think you'll enjoy it. See the sticky note on the AA forum for more info about the challenges offered.

I have also had a very positive experience with AA as a Platinum. Given the caveats in the above post which lay out the differences well I am pleased with AA. I have only done flagship business to Europe once on AA but I would say it compares bery favorably with Envoy. The Envoy seats are a little nicer but the food, wine etc on AA business is much better. In AA first it is no contest, better seats, better food, just completely superior. Also, flown first a fair amount domestically on AA and it is far above the US domestic first product. Even get decent hot meal on routes like ORD-LGA on AA. As a Plat the service on the phone is good (it is the regular CS bank) but nothing like typical CP phone line service.

I got my 10k preferred bonus 2 week ago (right after close of the latest statement) which was 8 week after I hit the 25k threshold.

I thought about AA, but you don't get full tier mileage/EQM credit for every flown mile. Isn't that the case.

Out of principal, i won't fly any airline that won't give me 1 tier mile for every flown mile. So I fly UA and US

Thanks for the answer. Hopefully they will post a little sooner -- 8 weeks will put me into mid-November. I knew I should have used my Sig Visa more than my Amex earlier in the year as I am well over $25K on AMEX.

Actually many people are confused by this but basically you are not correct. You can qualify for elite on AA using either miles or points (not a combination). You get one mile for every mile flown just like on US. In addition you get points based on fare class. So, if like me you fly mostly on cheap fares, the points arent of value to you. But they dont hurt you either. You still get one mile for every mile flown. So if you fly 50K miles all on the cheapest fares, you will be a Platinum. On the other hand. If you fly like 30K or a bit more miles all on full fares you will be a Platinum based on 50K points, even if you have fewer than 50K miles. It is really a good system. United is a little better in that you get bonus EQM miles and can hence mix and match cheap fares and expensive fares. That will help me this year on UA. On AA points are useless to me so I will qualify on miles only, but it counts. One advantage (no pun intended) of AA is that you can upgrade on any fare class on international flights. You cant do that on US or UA. The way of doing upgrades on AA is a little more cumbersome than UA though. Hope this clarifies things. You do get a mile for a mile, no matter what the fare.

I requalified for CP a month ago--have 3 trips with 16 segments booked for the next 2 weeks---

I could not possibly spend the miles in my account right now--no time!!

I have a feeling US will survive in one form or another.

Time will tell....

I requalified CP on 1/1/04 (again, w carryover)

I have too many miles, too many years, and too much loyalty with this airline to jump ship now.

However, I do see a fat lady approaching the microphone.

If and when she begins to sing, I will be off to find new canvasses on the back of another carriers FC seats. (probably UA).

According to this thread, http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=352032 someone was able to get a challenge by requesting it in writing, whereas others who called had been told no. You might want to read the thread, it will provide you with some information on how to request a challenge.

Congrats on the renewed status. Now if we could see those magic words on the September statement telling us about the carry over.

I re-qualified very early this year and had I not been cross ways with them earlier in the year, I would have made CP in early May. I've basically made PLT on DL through the late spring and early summer and so I will be giving US all the remaining business that makes sense. BTW, how were the Capra Hircus in London?

I must confess that as comfortable as I might be in London in general, I find that some, er, predilections are best not pursued on unfamiliar turf, as it were. I spent my time at the Brit Museum instead. Baa, humbug! ;)
