I am looking at booking a NYC hotel reservation via Priceline. What type of hotels are in the top category. Can anyone offer examples of hotel chains (i.e. are they FS/RC or Westin/Hilton) based on bids they made in this category for NYC? Thank you.

This link should give you an almost comprehensive idea of the hotels that have been obtained in the past for NYC via Priceline: http://p070.ezboard.com/fpricelineandexpediabiddingnewyorkcitynonewjersey. showMessage?topicID=1974.topic

yanxfann- Thank you. Hope the Yankees hold onto their lead and somehow find get better pitching in the playoffs. Although I'm from Boston, I am a Giant's fan.

Posters on betterbidding.com and on other bidding informaton boards have noted that the sole five-star hotel, the Waldorf Towers, seems to release its rooms at the last moment.

One other thing to keep in mind (not knowing the timing of your proposed trip): The Waldorf Towers is the "official" diplomatic hotel of the United States UN mission, and is also where Bush stays when he's in NYC. Although AFAIK Bush is not scheduled to address the General Assembly this year, the diplomatic activity always seems busiest in latter September-early October.

If you're a true cheapskate, the Jersey City hotels are a pretty good deal on Priceline. Most are a VERY short walk to the PATH train, which is a quick $1.50 ride into Manhattan. And JC hotels can be had for about $40, whereas Manhattan hotels are around $100.

Although the above Radisson offer may be tempting, DO NOT stay out by JFK for a Manhattan trip!

There is nothing out there and transportation to Manhattan will either be 1) expensive ($50 by taxi) or 2) long (1 1/2 hours) by mass transit.

Jersey City is a great deal if you can get the 'cheapie rates' and don't mind a 15 minute commute into NYC.... although you do lose the "NYC Experience".

I used Priceline (Sept 2004) to obtain a room at the Hilton and Towers ($106) and Westin Times Square ($99). Both winning bids were less than half price of the hotel's lowest website price.

My favorite NYC PL hotel is the Courtyard on 3 Av/52-53 Sts. Look on the bidding sites. I remember this property being competitive with Manhattan studio apts!

UN Week is almost upon us. Get ready for gridlock. God help New York. And those of us who live here.

Yes, UN week is that bad. It is the expense account free-for-all for the world's foreign ministries.

Forget discounted rooms. If you can find a room at all, come and enjoy the spectacle.

Actually, there are coach-style busses from all three NYC airports that stop at/within 1 block of Grand Central. Very comfortable, very affordable, and almost as fast a cab. I think I paid $15 or $18 last time, about two years ago. I've taken the shuttle both ways from JFK and EWR. Couldn't be simpler.

I have taken them too... when going to or returning from the airport; i would still not recommend using them as a viable option for staying out at JFK and commuting into Manhattan every day (as was suggested previously in this thread).

Even with the commuter busses it's $36/pp roundtrip and that money would better be applied towards a Manhattan hotel. This becomes even more evident if there is more than one person traveling. Also, in this example, there is also the issue of the time it takes to get to/from your hotel to JFK.

Thanks for the mention about the airport busses, but i think it should be noted that staying out by JFK for a Manhattan vacation is not the way to go.
