Other Middle East and Africa Frequent Flyer Programs - Sun D'Or Cancels Flights to TurkeyView Full Version : Sun D'Or Cancels Flights to Turkey Bretteee Sep 10, 04, 9:03 am http://www.haaretzdaily.com/hasen/spages/476453.html themicah Sep 10, 04, 10:38 am Thanks for posting this, Bretteee. This is a truly bizarre article. Sun D'or (which is owned by El Al, right?) is cancelling its turkey flights because of security disagreements with the turkish gov't. But the company's director general is promising pax will be "unaffected"--by reaccommodating them on turkish charter airlines instead! Are the turkish carriers somehow able to provide a HIGHER level of security than the Israeli carriers? Is the perceived security threat only against Sun D'or's planes and not its passengers? Very strange.... Bretteee Sep 10, 04, 11:53 am [QUOTE=themicah]Thanks for posting this, Bretteee. Antalya is a small airport; mostly charters. apirchik Sep 10, 04, 3:02 pm Are the turkish carriers somehow able to provide a HIGHER level of security than the Israeli carriers? Is the perceived security threat only against Sun D'or's planes and not its passengers? Very strange.... Turkish charters are not subject to Israel's "Shabak" (secret service) orders. These orders do not allow any Israeli airline to fly without Israeli trained guards following the whole process of the plane at the airport and in-air. They (Shabak) cannot force this on foreign carriers. I'm actually scheduled to go to Antalya on Sun D'or next Saturday ... themicah Sep 10, 04, 4:35 pm I'm actually scheduled to go to Antalya on Sun D'or next Saturday ... Will you go if they reaccommodate you on a turkish charter? Bretteee Sep 10, 04, 6:08 pm >>I'm actually scheduled to go to Antalya on Sun D'or next Saturday ...>> Mmmmm I don't think so. Just pulling your leg. Anyway I really like Antalya. apirchik Sep 10, 04, 7:44 pm Will you go if they reaccommodate you on a turkish charter? The flights were arranged by a club we are going to on vacation. Sun D'or was picked just as it could have been any other charter airline, Turkish or Israeli. Anyway, I have no problem taking a Turkish charter plane for the short ride to Antalya. I once did this route with Air Alfa and it was quite an experience (they somehow squeezed a 9th seat in a row on an A300 making it a 2-5-2 configuration with like 29" pitch). Bretteee Sep 11, 04, 3:31 am TheMicah here is an interesting trip report I found from Beirut to Bodrum, Turkey. It may be "off-topic" though as we are discussing Tel Aviv to Antalya on Sun D'Or and this is MegaJet. I hope this will not result in another meschuggene outburst / rukus. http://www.airliners.net/discussions/trip_reports/read.main/49205/ apirchik Sep 26, 04, 8:20 am So, the outgoing flight was indeed on a Turkish charter, but the actual plane was not looking like a charter. It was an A310 that belongs to Saga airlines. Very confortable plane with 2-4-2 seating and 32-33" (estimate) pitch. The plane had a 2 row, 2-2-2 seating premium cabin and seems like it's a long-haul configured plane. This flight was oprated by Fly Air. The return last night was on a Sun D'or plane with an LY flight number. It seems like LY have worked a deal with the Turks that they will fly under their permit and not under the name of Sun D'or. The plane was an all coach 757 with very lousy pitch (not more than 30"). There were 10 rows of coach between the front 2 doors. Club Med - Palmyie, Turkey - ^ ^ ^ |
