Travel Technology - Hotmail - delays in relaying emails?

I thought emails were sent out immediately or...? I was supposed to get a couple of email from a hotmail account some 3-4 hours back, and they only started coming in about 5 minutes ago. Is there any way to find out if my hotmail server was down or something...?

SMTP, the protocol responsible for the delivery of e-mail, doesn't say anything about a real-time delivery. Yes, usually e-mails are sent out right away, but it's not a must.

Moreover, I think Hotmail has some issues right now because of their implementing the bigger mailbox. This has been going on since yesterday.

I think sometimes would be a better description but yes, there are faster ways to send and receive email. Once Google Mail offers POP access (so I can access with my Blackberry) I will probably use that as my main email account instead of Hotmail.

I have rarely seen the sending delays with Hotmail, but have receiving delays sometimes of a day or more with mails. I'll send to two accounts, one will get it now, sometimes the hotmail one won't get it until the next day.

2GB? I have 2 Megabytes in my account. They're threatening to increase that sometime in the fall. And yes, I think I've gotten mail delayed by as much as a day or two.

Nah, I know of several folks, including some FT'ers and two family members who were not upgraded as of yesterday!

FWIW, I have heard, from an MS contact, that the occassional delays observed in hotmail are likely the result of their new SPAM filters.

Incidentally, I have not yet had any problem in this regard.

Well my junk email box gets about three messages a day and the format of the subject lines and from addresses shows what can only be described as desperation on the part of the spammers.

I'm still at 2 MB on my hotmail account and am waiting for the upgrade too.

Gaucho, the delays may have to do with the latest weapon in the war against spam, called "greylisting (http://greylisting.org/)".

The one that got upgraded is seven years old. The other two are about three years old. Wonder if age of the account is related to how soon the upgrades occur?

I regularly move mail in and out of the three accounts, from all kinds of different domains for archiving purposes. I almost never see replication delays beyond ten or fifteen minutes. 90% of this frequent activity occurs within 30 seconds.

My Hotmail account is over 7 years old and hasn't been upgraded, so at least anecdotally, I don't think that's the case.
