Hertz can reduce the charges for having problems with a rental, it depends on the nature of the problem, how you ask for the compensation, and what exactly you experienced. Customer Service folks at the rental/return desk used to be able to give you up to $75.00 for problems/general good will if you experience anything that might make you unhappy. City managers for the location can do just about anything, up to and including foregoing all the charges for a particular rental if the conditions warrant it in their opinion. ^ The key here is their opinion. Normally, if the car breaks down, and they bring you a new car, that is the end of it unless you ask for compensation in addition to the replacement. It has been my experience that if you have a problem that leaves you stranded on the side of the road, they will give in pretty quickly to additional compensation when you ask. The key is to ask, and be reasonable with your request. If you rent frequently from the same location, you will likely have an easier time getting what you want. sucker777 Sep 7, 04, 1:53 pm Once my car broke down completely on a 1-day rental and they didn't charge me. I left the car in front of a bar in NYC, and they picked it up. This time, I had repeated engine problems that required me to wait, twice, an hour for a mechanic. Finally, the evening before my 30-mile drive back to the airport, he said, even if the temperature gauge went all the way back to H and the warning light went off, I should just keep going as I would make it. The light went off 10 miles into the drive, and I did make it ok, but it sure was a nervous drive on the autobahn in a country where i didn't speak german, so I've demanded some sort of compensation for this extensive trouble. ajthegreat Nov 25, 04, 1:24 am My family rented a Navigator from Hertz in PHX in October. The car was obv. abused by someone else and had a lot of problems. Well on the drive from scottsdale to Sky harbor we pulled into a space and the thing wouldn't shift in park. My mom turned the car off and well, that was the end of it. You couldn't turn it back on without being in Park or Neutral. After a lot of yelling at Hertz telling them the car was broken and it wasn't gonna start with their idea's we finally took a town car to the airport and there they gave us most of our money back plus cab fees. We still rent from them as they have in my opinion the best luxury suv's and best selection of vehicles at good prices. |
