Hurricane Frances Advisory - Hertz Car Rental Policies
The Hertz Corporation has taken the following actions in the State of Florida in anticipation of Hurricane Frances. The Company may take similar action in other states as conditions warrant.

All prices are frozen for car rentals commencing from any Florida location until further notice.

Special one-way rates are in effect for rentals, commencing from any Florida location, beginning 4:00 p.m. Thursday, September 2, 2004 through 11:59 p.m. Friday, September 10, 2004 for return to any Hertz location in the United States. (If the vehicle is returned in Florida, the lower of the special rate or the regular one-way rate will apply.) A rate between $47.99 and $55.99 per day will apply for rentals of subcompact, compact, mid-size, and full-size cars (Car Classes A, B, C, D, and F). For all other vehicle classes, the price in effect on Wednesday, September 1, 2004 will apply to one-way rentals for pick-up in Florida and return to any location in the United States.

All customers who rent a vehicle in the State of Florida through 11:59 p.m. Friday, September 10, 2004 who originally contracted for a local return (i.e., generally same pick-up and drop-off location) may drop the vehicle at any other location in the United States at no additional one-way charge. Such customers will be charged the rate shown on the rental contract for the entire length of the rental.

A nice gesture, to be sure, and good p.r., too. However, Hertz is probably just as happy to get the cars out of the way of the storm (especially if the locations they're rented from get trashed and there won't be any vacationers heading there for a while), and most of the 2004s will be hitting the used car lots in the near future anyway.

...just as happy to get the cars out of the way of the storm...

Yep, my cynical side says they basically reduced the logistics and expense involved in getting tons of cars out of there. Probably wouldn't have been possible otherwise.

After Hurricane Charley, I couldn't find a gas station with any gas to sell. When I returned my car to Hertz I let the lady checking me in know this. She was sympathic and only charged me for a 1/2 tank, but that still amounted to $47 for a mid sized car. I suggest anyone renting a car in FL anytime between now and Nov. 1 buy the fuel option.
