Tomphot Dec 6, 00, 5:11 pm I got the Doubletree for $89 last year. I've even gotten the Hilton for under $100. You have to call and keep pressing the res. agent for a better rate. Hilton usually seems to find something better if you ask enough questions. Jon Toner Dec 6, 00, 5:55 pm I've stayed at the Holiday Inn off I-10. $79/night I believe. I'd jump at the Double Tree though - the Holiday Inn was OK at best. ------------------ "I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own." Sheryl Dec 6, 00, 6:31 pm All depends on what's going on in New Orleans at the time. Rates vary considerably depending whether or not there are major events or conventions. Have you checked rates yet for your dates? Priceline has worked very well in New Orleans. If you are interested in bidding, there's plenty of help at the message board I host at http://pub4.ezboard.com/bpricelineandexpediabidding stealthflier Dec 6, 00, 7:13 pm low rates are mostly gone...there's a big scuba diving trade show in town. shadow Dec 6, 00, 7:25 pm If you choose not to try Priceline, you may want to check nearer the airport (assuming you have wheels). Another choice is the Ramada on Chef Menteur Highway. I've stayed there a few times for $79-89. You'd need a car for that one too... Sheryl Dec 6, 00, 7:31 pm Not sure where you are checking, but I just checked Expedia only, and for New Orleans, rates are not high at all for your dates. You certainly should be able to get something very nice in your price range through Priceline. Why don't you read through the New Orleans category on the message board linked above? By the way, lots of FlyerTalkers are regulars there as well. Dudster Dec 6, 00, 9:22 pm Of course, it will certainly depend on what part of the city you would like to be in. Try www.quikbook.com (http://www.quikbook.com) and www.hoteldiscounts.com (http://www.hoteldiscounts.com) Altaflyer Dec 6, 00, 11:51 pm Booked a web rate at the Radisson for $59 in late December. This was surprisingly cheap. Fairmont also had rooms for $99. Sheryl Dec 7, 00, 12:17 pm Late December, until New Years, is historically a very slow time in New Orleans, just like the summer months when there is no convention business. The Radisson on Canal St. has received very mixed reviews. It is not recommended to walk between there and the French Quarter at night. Unlike what I've read in some places, it is not in the heart of the Central Business District. stealthflier Dec 7, 00, 1:59 pm i will be car-less,but there are shuttle buses to and from the convention center where i will be spending all my time, that stop at 3 different routes: route 1: hampton inn downtown (sold out i think); le meridian, sheraton, marriott courtyard, marriott, doubletree; route 2: w hotel; intercontinental; le pavilion, hyatt regency, days inn; rte 3: omni royal orleans, bourbon orleans monteleone, holiday inn french quarter, iberville suite, wyndhan canal place. during the day i'll be at the convention center. i'm a new gold HHilton honors member (thanks to the buzz; but few points. i will be spending almost no time in my room, so the less expensive the better, since amenities will be lost on me... thanks JayBrian Dec 7, 00, 2:11 pm My parents stayed at LeMeridian on Canal St in Nov for $98/night. They said the room was a bit small but otherwise liked the Hotel. Jay anthonyanthony Dec 9, 00, 2:23 am . And is typical, it has a web special of $89 for those dates. No need to go through a so-called discounter that has hefty cancellation penalties when there are no penalties when booking directly through Radisson's website. anthonyanthony Dec 9, 00, 2:58 pm Originally posted by Sheryl: NO NO NO. The information on Travelocity site says, and I quote, "-Walking Distance To Bourbon Street, Riverwalk, Convention Center, Aquarium Of The Americas". Is Travelocity just plain wrong or is there more than one convention center? I've never stayed there so I can't say for sure, so I defer to you... Sheryl Dec 9, 00, 3:31 pm Not the first time a travel agency website has had incorrect info. and not the last. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif The Radisson is located at 1500 Canal St. The Morial Convention Center's official address is 900 Convention Center Blvd. Mapping that on Yahoo says 1.4 miles. Granted, the Convention Center is several hundred yards long, so the official address may be at the far end, but the Wyndham Riverfront, located at 701 Convention Center Blvd. maps at 1.2 miles from 1500 Canal St. Please refer back to my earlier post on this thread which I made on 12/7 at 11:17 a.m. The Riverwalk is right next to the Convention Center. Aquarium of the Americas is equally distant from the Radisson as the Radisson is from the Riverwalk. Bourbon St. is about 4-5 blocks closer. There are *no* areas that would be of interest to a tourist that would allow a safe walk to the Radisson at night. stealthflier Dec 9, 00, 4:07 pm i'm sorry...i thought i posted this in generaltalk. i do know better.if one of you wizards can move this topic to generaltalk, i'd be grateful. i made a reservation at days inn for those four days just to have something. it was 105 without tax, and i was told that was the last room at the hotel for those dates and they were not accepting any discounts. i know not to walk around alone there, so i need to be at one of the hotels on the shuttle route, or virtually next door. for dinner in the french quarter, i can take a cab. my plans are still a bit fluid...i probably will reduce my stay by one night but nor sure at start or end. it depends on whether i use miles or pay to fly. if i use priceline (which i never have) can i cancel one of the nights? bbinchi Dec 9, 00, 11:10 pm stealthflier: Hope you can get another hotel. Sheryl is right about the location of the Radisson and I would not want to stay at the Days Inn either (located at 1630 Canal Street, just at the point where I-10 crosses Canal Street, it's about a block or so further out than the Ramada). You might try the service called "turbotrip" (formerly Roomfinders). This is the web site where I found a great deal on the International House earlier this year and everything went off without a hitch. Just make and sure and note turbotrip's cancellation policy for the hotel in question. http://www.turbotrip.com They are currently showing the New Orleans Sheraton (500 Canal Street) as having "standard" rooms available (with 1 King or 2 Doubles), for the period January 24-29, for $109/night. I know this may seem hard to believe, when Sheraton's web site shows rates >$300/night, but so was my $99/night rate at the International House early last January, yet that is what I paid. See if you can grab the Sheraton deal while it's listed. Good luck! Also shown is a fairly new property, the Ambassador Hotel, that looks intriguing. The rate is $89/night and it is located very near the Convention Center. The hotel's web site can be found at: http://clients.neworleans.com/ambassador/index.html Be sure and click on "Maps & Directions" at the bottom of the page to get a map, which can be enlarged by clicking on the smaller map once it loads. Location looks reasonable...probably about a block "uptown" from Poydras on Tchoupitoulas Street. As a matter of general interest to those of you that are planning a New Orleans trip, you might want to check out these two web sites. The first lists many of the hotels offering "Papa Noel" rates for this month: http://www.frenchquarterfestivals.org/Christmas/PapaNoelRates.html The second one lists the convention calendar published by the New Orleans Metropolitan Convention and Visitors Bureau. It can help you avoid times when the city will be full and, thus, hotel rooms scarce or priced at a premium. http://www.neworleanscvb.com/conventemp.cfm?p=2 Karen2 Dec 11, 00, 1:53 am I have not been to New Orleans in a long time but across the street from the original Emeril's Restaurant is an all-suite hotel only 2 short blocks from the convention center. I stayed there about 8 yrs ago. It was created out of an old warehouse. It was not only cheap but available at an Entertainment Coupon Book rate during a BIG convention I attended. Found it in an old AAA book - it was the Radisson Suite Hotel at 315 Julia Street. It was closer even than the Hilton to the convention center and had complimentary drinks every evening. I think we also had free breakfast. I do not know if it is the same Radisson others are writing about. ozstamps Dec 11, 00, 4:08 am The ONLY place for a tourist without wheels to be in is the Toulouse Street/Burbon Street area. (ie French Quarter) The downtown business area is quite a walk, and no vibe WHATEVER - be warned. Thats where Intercontinental etc are located. The Sugar Bowl football match, Jan 1 sees EVERY hotel crank rates up many times normal and they sell out. MEGA bucks needed - lucky you are late Jan! I spent a NYE few years ago at "The Inn On Bourbon Street" .. a stunning time to be in Norlens I can tell you and this is THE best location with a street balcony room. Forget the rooms, it is LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION you are buying. 300,000 (literally) noisy drunks shoulder to shoulder below, and sipping Moet in the room watching itall like members of the Royal Family with a bunch of College Football Nuts was a hoot! (Alabama Crimson Tide as I recall.) And if bidding on Sheryl's board why not take the $20 Amex discount per room night - has worked for me like crazy with Radissons/Doubletree/Marriott/Starwood/Westin etc at $30-50 a night in expensive big city locations. You have NO idea what to bid unless you read Shery's board FIRST. See it at: http://www.priceline.com/hotels/itinerary.asp?free=amexsave (ps Sheryl, no recent data on JFK airport Hotels on your boards. I need for Fri Jan 5 - I am getting nothing at $50 even down to ** with Amex, and a weekend early Jan should be deadsville surely?!) ------------------ ~ Glen ~ [This message has been edited by ozstamps (edited 12-11-2000).] Sheryl Dec 11, 00, 11:11 am Originally posted by Karen2: Radisson Suite Hotel at 315 Julia Street. The only Radissons in New Orleans are the one mentioned above and one near the airport. Tino Dec 11, 00, 2:39 pm The Hyatt has $89 rates currently, even though it is a bit of a walk to the Quarter. Cheap cab ride, though. The Radisson on Canal Street is not worth the $59 advertised. That property convinced me that "Radisson" means "dead hooker under the bed" in French. Nasty, dilapidated facilities and wretched service. SLCflyer Dec 13, 00, 1:12 pm I just returned from New Orleans yesterday. I was there for a pre-conference meeting for a trade show we are exhibiting at in June. Part of my purpose was to check out the official convention hotels. There's a fairly nice Holiday Inn Select right across from the convention center. A few blocks north is a Courtyard Marriott (a bit small, but not bad) and the aforementioned Embassy Suites (seemed very nice, but also small). About a block down Convention Blvd. from the center is the Wyndham Riverfront. It seemed to have been recently updated and had nice details but didn't get to see a room. On down another block is the Hilton Riverside (where I stayed - it's the official hotel of our convention). I would NOT recommend it. Location-wise it's fine, and the lobby areas are nice, but the rooms are in DIRE need of upgrading and it's quite run-down. I'd say the same thing for the Marriott up on Canal. The Doubletree was average - great location just a block up Canal from the river. My favorite by FAR was the Wyndham at Canal Place. It's connected to an upscale mall, right at the corner of the convention area and the French Quarter. Great location and the hotel itself is beautiful! I realize this may come too late for you, but hopefully others can benefit! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif Greytop Dec 13, 00, 6:12 pm Sorry to hear the Hampton Inn is full. Stayed there in August for $89. Had a very large room with high ceilings. (Nicer than I expected for a Hampton Inn.) It is in a renovated office building and is only two blocks from the French Quarter. ------------------ AS MVP Gold, UA Premier, HHonors Gold FOOLISHRUNNER Dec 15, 00, 7:09 pm I just got back from N.O. and I stayed at the Wyndham-Canal St which is a very nice property across the street from Harrah's Casino and on the riverfront. Very close to everything. We walked to the French Quarter 2-3 times a day. We paid $61/night through Priceline and we didn't even use the American Express $25 coupon. This is a good hotel with a shopping center on the first 3 floors including SAKS. ------------------ |
