Totally stupid idea and waste of money to do this. Why would they. One hunch is once you check in, you cant cancel. Either way you wont have room key so you sitll have to check in again at hotel. THe article said you then use self service machines. Why do web checkin at all.. Also what bout upgrades...
Radisson's "Express Yourself" Web check-in will be available to anyone who reserves a room. Seven days before arrival, customers will receive an e-mail inviting them to check in at Radisson.com. Hilton plans to make its online check-in available 24 hours before arrival.

Most certainly this will be an option. However, there will be a cost for the upgrade, count on it.
The direction these hotels are taking is making the stay experience like putting gas in your car. You log in, get assigned a room, a machine in the lobby gives you the key, you stay, you leave. It will be just like Chevron, I pull up to the pump, I put my card in, the machine gives me gas, I leave.
This is exactly what I would want when staying at a four star hotel as a preferred customer.

Sounds like the web version of 1-800-CHECKIN at Hyatt. Not a bad program as I have actually had good experience getting upgrades to preferred floors and even suites as a Hyatt Diamond.

The difference: with Hyatt 1800CheckIn you get a live person to check you in and someone who can talk and make things happen if needed. In other words, you are not "railroaded". ;)
If Starwood introduced this it woiuld be a wonderful advance for anyone who was otherwise no-showing an award reservation . . .
That's about it. I can guarantee you that within a month we will hear people p*ssing and moaning that they checked in for their hotel, went to the airport, found out their flight was cancelled, and were stuck paying for one night + cancellation fee, minimum.
I like the 1800-checkin service much, much better.
