MilesBuzz! - upgrade AA or NW

I have an oppotunity to go to Hawaii in Feb.and have enough miles to upgrade one class on both AA and NW. The AA flight is PVD and connects in ORD. The NW connects in DTW and then nonstop or flights through LAX or SEA. Any thoughts or comments. Thanx

Since you can upgrade on NW, why don't you try CO's business first to Hawaii?

American has switched to 76x on the route from ORD repalcing the old DC10. have been on the prior piece of equipment and the route is find if HNL is final if Maui i suggest going thru DFW: mahalo

I thought BizFirst was considered as Fclass when upgrading...or is that just for the trans-pac routes?

CO flies 2-class planes, NW and AA are 3-class planes. CO's BizFrist is pretty nice if you can get with them, probably better than biz class on the 3-class airlines.

I do not believe that either AA or NW flies 3 class planes to Hawaii. Look on the AA board and you will see a lot of posts complaining about AA's first class service on Hawaii routes -- the cramped seating is most often mentioned. I've only flown coach on AA to Hawaii, but can concur that the first class cabin looked pretty abysmal (in comparison to other long-haul first class cabins; it looked like heaven compared to AA's coach seating).

I have personally flown NW first class to Hawaii, and the first class cabins on their DC-10s were not exactly state of the art, but quite spacious and nice. Very generous recline and pitch on the seats, good food, and friendly service -- I thought it roughly equivalent to a middling international business class experience.

Out of these two, I'd recommend NW.

I'm flying CO in BusinessFirst when I move to Hawaii in January. Posts on the CO board indicate that it's better than either NW or AA first to Hawaii, but I can't yet confirm that from personal experience.

Thanx to all for the replies. I did try to locate a CO flight on their web site, but the only flights that came up were the NW flights. Is there abetter way to locate CO flights??

CO has one daily nonstop from Newark and one daily nonstop from Houston. You can probably easily connect from PVD, BOS, and BDL to both of those hubs on CO though I would have to research the timing of the flights to be sure. They also fly between LAX and Hawaii but it would probably not suit you since it would require 2 changes of planes. Business First has an outstanding reputation but I have only flown in it on a domestic flight with regular first class service. The big problem of course is upgrading. Just search the CO forum and find out how difficult it is. Hawaii is considered an international destination which means you can only upgrade a qualifying fare and only within 30 days of departure. Most definitely not! For upgrading, as well as purchase, it's considered Business Class! I'm flying upgraded to BF on a CO flight next week...LAX-HNL, HNL-GUM, and GUM-CNS. And both the LAX-HNL and HNL-GUM are BusinessFirst flights.

On CO, you can get free Elite upgrades on domestic First, but not on intl. BF flights. On BF intl. flights you must upgrade using miles...but it is considered Biz Class for upgrade purposes! And, from what I understand it really is a cut above regular Biz or domestic First, although it does fall short of intl. FC on a 3 class aircraft.
