US Airways Dividend Miles (Pre-FlightFund Merger) - Would US flight on UA metal be safer if US goes belly-up?

I'm trying to book a trip from SFO to Orlando around Thanksgiving. On the trip out I can either take a redeye on US metal via CLT, or take a non-stop on UA metal. On the return I'd take the nonstop on UA metal. I prefer the redeye logistically, but am concerned about what happens if US goes bankrupt. Would I be more protected by taking UA metal both ways since we'd already have a seat, and hence UA would be obliged to carry us?

Thanks!

Bill

I'd go w/ UA if I were in your shoes right now...But then again that's just my opinion...

If I were you, I would book the flights through UA, on UA ticket stock (starting with 016). It doesn't matter if the flights are operated by US, as long as they have a UA flight number. That way, if US did go under, UA would still get you where you want to go, since any US operated flights would still technically be UA flights, and they would just reaccomodate you on a UA operated flight.

The problem is if I book this through UA the fare on the same flights is about $160/ticket higher. So the question is, is the risk that US Air will stop flying *and* United won't honor my seat even though it's booked on their flight worth $320?
