I'm not sure how this works the Points and Points instead of airline miles. It stated 10 points for base and bonus 5 for dollar spent.
Let's say I have a 300.00 hotel stay without taxes, it comes out 3000 points and If I chose the points and points option, the 5 bonus will be 5x300 = 1500 and the total stay would be 4500 HH points.
Is this correct?

Yes, you are correct.
Only 3000 are considered base points for status.

Yep. That's not counting whatever bonus points you'd earn based on your status (e.g., if you are Gold, you'd earn 300 X 10 = 3,000 base points, plus 1,500 bonus points as 50% on base points for the "points and points" option (in lieu of airline miles), plus 750 bonus points as 25% on base points as Gold, for the total of 5,250 points).

If you're a blue-level member that's correct. If you're Silver, Gold or Diamond there are bonus points calculated as a percentage on the 3000 base points.
Another question that comes up frequently - if you're watching points for elite qualification (in addition to stays or nights, it's possible to qualify on points), only the 3000 base points count toward elite qualification
Usually any incidental charges that go on your room, like bar, spa or restaurant tabs, also earn points.
It's difficult to qualify on points without reaching the stays or nights threshold first, but it's possible, for example if you entertain at the hotel and have a few $500 dinner tabs in addition to your nightly rate.

Thanks for clearing up the confusion. I think I will switch to the points and points. I have a week stay in Mission Valley that will be over 700.00 so it should add up

Last year I made Diamond based on points after 44 nights and this year after only 38 nights. Depends where you stay. I usually stay in expensive properties at $200-250 per nights plus a few meals included. I make past $10,000 in no time. If you stay at $100 properties you will likely make it on stays/nights instead.
BTW, SPG could have my business if they would give me status based on $$$ spent. Instead, HH gets my business. Go figure!

my goal for this year is to make gold again for next year. I have 7 stays so far not counting the next couple of stays til dec. I doubt I'll make diamond.
