bmi diamond club - Back to the important things in life...

Everyone seems to be getting very het up at the moment about silly little things like missing 20K bonuses, reductions in LH earning and absent star upgrade certificates. While I appreciate that this chitter chatter may be of limited interest to a minority, it's been months since we've had a good grumble about the important things in life. I refer, of course, to in-flight catering...

The sausages and mash they knock out at lunchtime aren't bad. The cooked breakfast is a pleasant return to the good old days (although it could be a little more consistent across the network... yes I understand it's a selling point on the commuter routes, but if you're sat up front on the tourist routes would it really cost that much more than a panino?). The sherry trifle is frankly heavenly (when waiting an hour for a gate at 2am the other week, I got through half a dozen).

However...

Vegetable Cobbler? Vegetable bloody Cobbler? Absolutely disgusting. Inedible. (For those of you surprised at my acceptance of the vegetarian option, suffice to say the alternative was salmon...). I had to send down to the back for a cheese and pickle sandwich.

Oh for a warm scone...

The vegetable and hummous sandwiches I do not understand. Usually I'll eat anything (fried egg and mushrooms aside) but a hummous sandwich? Not inedible, just a bit odd.

Favourites in Y: sausage and cheese pannini (no stringy, fatty bacon), chicken sandwich.

I found the sherry trifles in C rather sickening and reminiscent of school dinners but I guess after 5+ hours on the Bombay Sapphire in the lounge I'd probably eat the bento box it came in...

I rather like SK's catering boxes in Y. You know what you're getting, and the huge salmon salad I had on a recent ARN-EDI was actually very tasty.

Much though I hate to admit it (and I only fly them when I end up with a full fare ticket from work) but the catering on the BA EDI-LHR is much better than the bmi offerings (in my opinion) and BA offer it to everyone.

The terrace's domestic lounge is also superior to the bmi lounge.

Why don't BD ditch the Diamond Club v Business lounge distinction (there is little difference anyway) and instead make the whole lounge into a single, but varied lounge concept as BA have done?

And it would be nice if they popped in computers with Internet access and printers, etc.

And no doubt that "fresh food" is a bit lacking.

But I must say I don't mind the paninis either. The toastie they service in Y is not that great though...

Well now! As the flight I was booked on was late and I was early I asked if I could take an earlier flight (BRU-LHR Biz Class). No problem sir, but you may not get a "meal"! No problem says I, the G&T will compensate!
Including me, only 6 pax at the pointy end.
Sure enough polite CA says "Sorry no meal for you" but hands me a small tray with a packet of biscuits and cup! Tea duly arrives but where the G&T? Drinks Trolley never appears but eventually CA says "Anything else?", G&T requested and eventually appears from behind curtain on small tray. Very individual service.
So, with flexible ticket no guarantee of box of goodies!
In flight catering? What in flight catering?

The catering on BD is certainly not the best and I would have to agree that BA do it better on the LHR EDI run. That said the BA lounge at EDI is often packed and although they have nice finger sandwiches there is usually none left.

As far as C class on BD, its just not worth paying extra for.

It depends on your size, as a big-boned person, I certainly appreciate the extra elbow room in the A/C seats and the reduced chance of getting stuck in the dreaded middle seat - knowing that if I did, it would at least be wider than BA.

And let the great unwashed in to drink my freepour single malt? Never!

Well I have to say I love the food on LBA-EDI in C. Morning means cooked breakfast and afternoon means cream tea and a lump of fine tasting cheese (too much cheese would be bad for you anyway).

The paninis are not bad. Tried that omelette wrap thing recently - God - it was like a white hot Gregg's pasty but made from carpet and bathroom sealant. Gross...

The lounge in LHR really ought to do something about the cheese/biccies thing. At least in BA you get a couple of curled up egg & cress sarnies and Walkers(!) crisps - all much appreciated if you've been doing the bluebottle in a jamjar thing in London half the day and missed lunch.

Mind you.... better coffee now in BD

Why do these things seem important at the time?? I'm sure most of us would sooner eat our own hair if we had to actually buy them..

Sherry trifle at school dinners ??!!! Must be a Scottish thing. Obviously something we poor denizens at the teetotallers-founded Bristol Grammar School never even got a whiff of !
