Miles & More (Lufthansa, Austrian, Swiss, and other partners) - Shocking LH Luggage Handling -- All True

I swear to you that every detail in the following story is true.

This past weekend, I attended a wedding in Bad Iburg, Germany. The nearest airport to Bad Iburg is Muenster/Osnabruck (FMO). Not wanting to drive and finding the train connections from Frankfurt inconvenient (at least two transfers and a bus), I decided the easiest option would be to fly LH from FRA to FMO. I booked the ticket using some soon to expire United miles I had (at 590 Euros, it seemed like a good use of orphaned miles).

I arrived in FRA on Friday, Aug. 13 on Continental from Newark and, owing to a delay leaving EWR, had just over two hours to make my connection. No big deal, I made it fine with plenty of time to spare. I checked my bag through to FMO in EWR.

When our bus arrived at the Eurowings operated ATR-72 that would be LH 2092 to FMO, I noticed the ground crew removing luggage from the plane, but did not think anything of it, as I figured they must be unloading from the incoming flight.

When I got to FMO, only fifteen bags materialized for a nearly full flight. I was not too concerned as I figured my bag did not make the connection in FRA. I gave the baggage info to the Eurowings "lost & found" office in FMO and headed to my hotel in Bad Iburg. I was told that my bag would likely arrive on the next flight and, as the wedding was the next day, did not worry about my suit not arriving on time.

When I called Eurowings in FMO later in the day, I was told my bag had not arrived on the next flight, but that it was in LH's possesstion and that it would arrive later in the day and be delivered to my hotel. Once again, no worries.

This pattern continued all day Friday and Saturday. I would call Eurowings in FMO and they would tell me they had received a telex from FRA that the bag was loaded, only for it not to show-up. Calls to LH's main lost luggage numbered confirmed this information. Both FMO and FRA were aware of my need for the bag for the wedding and assured me it would arrive in time.

Apparently, owing to the Germany school holiday, the flights were quite full and they could not accomidate all the checked luggage.

By Saturday morning, I was getting quite upset and, after being told that about 50 people were affected, reccomended that they dispatch a courrier from FRA to deliver the luggage. FMO is barely over 100 miles straight line distance from FRA and is a three hour drive. I was told this was not possible.

Of course, my bag did not arrive and I had to attend the wedding in shorts and a t-shirt. Germans are wonderful people, but are not known for being informal, so I felt very much out of place and like the dumb American who did not know to wear a suit to a wedding. Fortunately, everyone was understanding and made me feel quite welcome despite the clothing snafu.

I ended up telling them not to even bother sending the bag as I was scheduled to overnight in Frankfurt and I could pick it up there. Frankly, I did not trust them with it.

My specifc complaints are as follows:

1. This seems like a pretty common occurance, or at least one that was entirely forseeable. LH could have looked at the loads for the upcoming flights and determined that it was unlikely that they could accomidate extra luggage. At the end of the day on Friday, they could have sent a courier with the extra luggage. I went to school in a small city in Indiana and, during school holidays, not all the luggage would make it onto the small planes flying to the city from Chicago. The baggage always arrived the next day. The city was only marginally closer to Chicago than FMO is to FRA.

2. Had I been told upfront that the luggage would not get there in time, I could have taken corrective action by getting another suit. By the time it became clear the bag would not arrive, it was too late for that.

Basically, I expected much better from LH. You don't fly LH for its comfort or graceful inflight service (at least in Economy), you fly it because it is efficent and gets you there on time with your luggage. It would have been one thing had the bag been mistakenly loaded onto a flight to HKG or something, mistakes happen. But for it to be sitting in FRA for two full days when it was needed only three hours away by car is totally unacceptable.

I am not the type to ask for compensation, but in this case, I feel that LH's performance was so sub par that I should be entitled to something.

A free ticket is not going to cut it, I would rather walk than fly LH again.

I am flying FRA-FMO frequently (without luggage). Before this season, it was operated by Eurowings AvroJets, which were never full. They told me that they need the Avro because 99% of the people come from connecting flights, so they need the weight capacity of the Avro to accomodate the luggage and cannot change to a smaller aircraft. Now they did, and it seems the prop plane cannot lift enough weight as it should on this route. very sad.

What a pain in the ...!!!
It happens quite a lot of times to me, that my luggage is not arriving in time. But at least they delivered it a few hours or ONE day later...
I'm sorry to hear about the headache you had with LH, you should definitely contact LH and tell them that you are very disappointed about the way they acted at the lost luggage in FRA!

Thanks alot for the excellent and interesting story. I fly quite alot from FMO to FRA or MUC and it happens very, very often (at least in the last few months) that a flight is cancelled. I was so often put into a taxi from FMO to BRE or FRA. The taxi driver told me that this happens quite often. On the way back the luggage is missing also very often. Now I know why...
I have to say that the people at the FMO are, so far to me, at least very friendly and try to find a good solution. Booking you onto another plane of different airline or driving you by taxi to another airport. When the luggage is missing, it is delivered also by taxi very fast to my home address within 24h.
But this is happening quite often not only to me also to friends of mine flying from FMO. Especially last winter was a real pain. If I would have to fly to my own wedding, I would definetely avoid FMO - Flights... ;)

Did they substitute the Avro with an ATR72 (or the next smaller ATR) as they did on the FDH-FRA connection? The FDH-FRA can get very full but I never missed any luggage for more than a day .. so maybe I am lucky for once.
Generally, despite my habit to curse anything LH does post the M&M 'upgrade', I must say that their lost baggae handling has always been excellent - it is fast, reliable, and very uncomplicated. Compared to the days when I flew SR and BA - the latter ones took 6 weeks to deliver the suitcase. Also, I had much worse experience with UA which in contrast to their most excellent customer service in other areas.
So, sorry to hear that even LH manages to fail in this aspect on rare occasions.

i am flying FMO-FRA about 11 times a year, never a flight was cancelled. most times i take the early flight FRA FMO then FMO FRA at 14:40.
weekdays only.

the Avro was substitued by the ATR when they decided to switch most of the flights for tranfer folks to MUC, so now the freuquencies to MUC are very high, to FRA very low. And now they also changed to smaller place to FRA and to bigger ones to MUC. this is a side effect of FRA not building its runways fast enough -- LH just shifts the connecting traffic to MUC.

Indeed LH is trying to move more traffic through MUC, which is a smart move.DTM has no flights to FRA anymore, only to Munich. As for EW and the ATR , it is ( unfortunately ) a long known problem dating back to the KLM days of Eurowings with more or less the same situation, but less excuses from the staff.

It simply comes dowen to the fact that the cargo department of the ATR 72 was simply not designed to accomodate the luggage it has to.The plane was built for short european commuter routes, where people normally travel with light luggage, but not for tourists coming from overseas piece concept flights.

KLM/EW staff at DUS told me a couple of times back in the good old days, that they have to leave luggage on the ground, cause there is not enough space, likely to be the same scenario on the FRA-FMO routes.

Don`t think that weigh limitations come into play on a route barely longer than 150 miles for a plane capable of flying a distance 6 or 7 times as long.

Beside that certainly a subpar performance of LH/EW, but FMO is actually a nice airport to fly from, especially the Relax lounge and the cheap parking options right opposite the terminal.

First of all, sorry to hear about your bad experience, PresDRC.
I am also a regular on FMO-FRA flights (living close to FMO), usually connecting to and from overseas flights in FRA.
It has occured to me from time to time that my luggage didn't make it on the leg from FRA to FMO, but it was always on the next flight and has been delivered to my home. Luckily it never happened on the way to FRA when I started my trip.
I believe every word you say is true, but also think that this is a (admittedly totally unacceptable) exception.

IMHO you should complain strongly to LH and please keep us up-to-date with their replies.

Cheers,
Torsten

On the MUC-NUE (only 160 km)
we have the same problems.
(ATR operated by Eurowings).
When the plane is nearly full, and they have a lot of connecting Pax with heavy luggage, they often have to send the luggage with a taxi!

They also have lots of problems with the ATR in general.
What i figured out is: From MUC they have some routes with the ATR at nearly the same time. If there are technical problems they cancel the MUC-NUE fligth, because it is the shortest! Bad luck!
