How concerned exactly?
Judi and I had taken many trips to the Caribbean during the fall months and had never had a problem. We were attracted by the good hurricane season rates. One trip over Thanksgiving on Grand Cayman, a hurricane was 150-200 miles away, yet the wind and predominantly grey skies during our trip have made us not want to go during this season again and we have not.
Aruba is supposed to be far enough south in the Caribbean that it has never/rarely been ravaged by a hurricane, something to do with the typical development/travel path of hurricanes.
If you are truly that concerned, for a few extra bucks, purchase travel insurance that would allow you to cancel w/o penalty.

September is still pretty much peak hurricane season. You might try Aruba. It is out of the hurricane belt so might be a good choice.

We love Cayman Islands and Virgin Islands and travel to both during the so-called hurricane season numerous times. Here's a website that shows you historically when storms are more likely to peak and wane: http://stormcarib.com but, again, this is simply a compilation of historical experience. We typically purchase the travel insurance; relatively inexpensive and gives us peace of mind should plans be cut short unexpectedly.

There is a great palce at the Westin Rio Mar Beach / Golf Country Club - ner the EL Yunque Rain Forest! and Fajardo Marina areas, Great Beaches nice restaurant and richt now they have offers that range in around 150 per night.
The Westin Rio Mar Beach Resort, nestled in a lush hideaway on the "Isle of Enchantment," was created to pamper and impress. Its breathtaking ocean views are rivaled only by the elegant tropical décor of its 600 guest rooms and superbly appointed suites. Each room and suite surrounds you in the comforts of home — with the added convenience of an award-winning staff at your beck and call.

don't know what is an spg dollar.
There are not a whole lot of starwood in the caribbean.
Huricanes in heavy brick and morter are not a big deal, although the storm surge can be a problem.
I think ABC has never had a hurricane, and there is a starwood on one of them. Cayman does not get hit often, either & has a starwood. I don't know what the starwood resort on St. John's is like, but it is on the sheltered side of the island. It's an old rock-resort.
BVI and PR seem to get frequent hits, and unmentioned in the US, are all the "troughs" that come through. They can provide 35-50mph wind for many days as they slowly trundle through.
I like sailing in BVI in August-Sept, as the rates for charter are very low, and the wind usually really blows.

Cat 4 and 5 Hurricanes are the one that causes more damages in PR, most of the building commercial and privates are Concrte desing for to sustain winds of 140 + mph so dont worry. Storm surges12 30 not a big deal. I've been thru 2 mayors hurricanes in 33 years living in Puerto Rico, so its not true that they hit the island very often. Only Hugo in 89' and Georges in 98' and the main problem is the electrical grid, and of course the water and sewer system.
October is one of the busiest month in the caribbean, and in Puerto Rico they are monitoring these systems days before the arrival, and in most of the cases you have more than 48hrs to flee the island!

This is a great tool to monitor the systems in the Atlantic, you can get it at download.com ^
just booked to cayman next week. concerned? ah, not so much. bought cheap travel insurance just in case.... so it gets cut short or delayed, bummer, but not the end of the world.
guess it depends how risk adverse you are. definitely some good deals out there. we went to cayman last april and it was cloudy/stormy/rainy a few days so you never know what you'll get. plus, water is very nice and warm in the fall. :)
as for starwood - nice westin on cayman. great spa, large beach in great area (by the new ritz opening shortly).
