I'm trying to find a cheap airfare for an early morning flight departing Cape Town for Windhoek on 30-August-04 and continuing to Johannesburg on an early-morning flight on 07-September-04. Any advise?

Where are you buying the ticket from? If you are in CPT, you should be able to get flights on SA for around R2282 (~$304). It's not going to get much cheaper than that as the flights are one-ways. Or go to one of the bucket-shops in CPT.
If you want to buy from outside of RSA - have you checked www.flysaa.com or www.airnamibia.com?

I'd be purchasing the ticket from outside the States.

If I wait to get to Cape Town on the 26th of August and I try to purchase my ticket on the 26th for travel on the 30 of August, how much money will it cost. Right now, I'm getting an airfare of $440.00 roundtrip.

I also looked into roundtrips into and out of Windhoek from Cape Town, but the airfares, at least from here, tend to be priced right around the same.

Do you have a number of a bucket shop in Cape Town I could call?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you are flying CPT- WDH - JNB then AFAIK this is not round-trip, but rather 2 one-ways. So the airfare will be higher than a round-trip. Try contacting these people here: http://www.flightcentre.co.za/flights they usually have cheap flights.

Depending on costs, I would consider getting 2 RT tickets CPT-WDH-CPT and WDH - JNB - WDH using only the first segment of each ticket. But check with the travel-agent how this compares to CPT-WDH-JNB.

On www.flysaa.com the cost for CPT-WDH-JNB is: $ USD 419.73

Let me know what price you got.

As it turns out, I contacted the travel agency's Cape Town office, as well as a collegue's associate living in Johannesburg, who put me in contact with her firm's travel agency. I thought this would certainly do the trick. Alas, the roundtrip CPT-WDH-CPT cost the same as the open jaw ticket I was looking at CPT-WDH-JNB.

What I learned from this experience is that it's expensive flying in Africa, even with an advance purchase. A short distance, of about 2 hours flying time - similiar to distances between Washington and Orlando or Frankfurt and Barcelona - is $420 per passenger.

What's frustrating is that I've been looking at this flight since March 2004 and nothing's changed. It goes down $30USD and back up to the standard rate. I guess it says something about the state of competition of aviation in Southern Africa.

In any case, many thanks for your advice. I only wish it had turned out.
