I just checked in online for my first HP flight, and the BPs came up and they have no bar code on them, should they? I'm worried that they did not load correctly.

Hi,

When was the last time you had your boarding pass (obtained from any source) scaned at an America West gate ?? (Editited ... I'm sorry ... Just re-read your post after submitting my reply [where's that danged "embarassed" smiley icon]. See that this is your 1st HP (airline lingo for America West ... same as AA = American Airlines) trip. Ignore my cynical question above and read on......

HP (IMHO) is the "little airline that could". They've come a long ways in the past few years. And they have a long ways to go. America West doesn't scan boarding passes. They tear off a portion when you board. They count them at/after departure. If BP count doesn't match what the computer says then they have to do a manual one-on-one check to determine who's on-board.

That's why on oversold flights they never really know how many pax they have. Why they paid me a $300 voucher once to get off an oversold flight that they eventually put employee non-revs on-oard.Why the Flight Attendants write down the pax count on a slip of paper to give to the Flight Crew.

I'm sorry. I diverted from your questions.
Your boarding passes are a-okay without a bar-code as HP doesn't have a scanner at the gate.

Quite a few times, I have problems getting to the point where my BP's show on my computer screen for printout. But once I've gotten that far, I've never had a problem using them.

A little advice to help you and your Gate Agent....
Go ahead and separate your boarding passes at the dotted line. Have both copies in your hand to show the Agent as you board. He/She will keep one copy and will be thankful that you've taken the time to separate the 2 (remember that an "official" BP from an agent or HP kiosk will be perforated, something your own printer probably doesn't do).

Once in a Blue Moon (which seriously, happens this month !!!) I've had an agent snap at me for separating my copy of the BP from thiers (Agent says ... How do I know this is an official document if it's been torn in two !!). I blow those comments off, we've all had our bad days and taken them off on someone else. :(

I do this separation for all types of BP's but especially for those I've printed myself. Really assists in slightly speeding up boarding for everyone ^

Have a good trip !!
Steve
