Just got another platinum invite - (get them about twice a year - this one came about 3 weeks after the last one though). This time (for first time for me) they are throwing in 25000 MR points after first purchase.

Since I am not traveling much these days the perks and math don't work for me for the Plat. Still, thought it was interesting that they were offering me MRs for the first time.

Now - for 50K or 75K I might consider it :)

Back in January they were offering 25K for new green charge card accounts.

$395. I also got 2 invites recently. Rawhide, I am curious- Did you have the Platinum Card at any point? I did. I dropped it back in 1989 or 1990.

I never did any business with Amex until November 2003. At that point, I got the Delta Skymiles Platinum card. Later, in January, when they offered the 25K MR for the green card, I got the green card. In March, I called and upgraded the green to platinum.

Why upgrade to platinum?

Why upgrade to platinum?

The platinum has some really nice travel perks. I for one make good use out of the DL/CO/NW lounge access.

I debated long and hard. For years, I paid for the WC membership and my green card.

The platinum is cheaper than the both combined, has other travel perks. So far, I have had no problems using it at WCs.

We used the currency exchange service (delivered to your door--I used to have run downtown to the one bank that did it.) The travel insurance and medical evacuation appear decent.

Now, they have offered to let me add another adult for $175 (linked to my account) so my sister is considering it. (It better be someone you TRUST--it's linked to your account *grins*)

So far, we have felt it was worth it--but now I'm bummed I didn't get the 25000 MMs :)

gretchendz,

Do you hold a US-issued Platinum AmEx? If so, are you covered for medical and dental treatment when traveling WITHIN the United States?

Thanks,
Susan

Yes--I hold a US-issued Platinum AmEx.

According to the site information:

500,000 Travel Accident Insurance
Receive insurance coverage when you're traveling anywhere in the world, with up to $500,000 in accidental death and dismemberment coverage at no additional cost. Enrollment is automatic when you purchase Common Carrier Conveyance-plane, train, helicopter, ship, or bus-tickets with the Platinum Card.3

AND

24-hour emergency referrals through Premium Global Assist®
For security and peace of mind, rely on Premium Global Assist 24/7 in the event of an emergency when traveling. You can get help almost anywhere in the world, anytime you need it. You can reach us by calling 1-800-345-2639. Outside the U.S., call 715-343-7979

5. Premium Global Assist (PGA) must arrange all medical and visitor transportation. Because PGA is an assistance service and not an insurance plan, we cannot reimburse you for expenses you incur on your own.

Then--to be sure I was correct I pulled out "the fine print." It says you must be 100 miles away from home for coverage to be effective.(and not be traveiling against medical advice); it covers cardholder and their family members. It is not medical or dental insurance If you arrange it through them (and not on your own), it covers:

*emergency information
*medical transport and evacuation at no cost to a "more appropriate medical facility" (will also pay for one family member to accompnay you)
*medical assessment, coordination and monitoring

there's more fine print, but that's the gist of it :)

Hope to never use it :)

I got (and accepted) the 25K offer. I received the card and booklet today. I'm curious about the Platnium travel agency (or whatever acronym it uses). I'm generally a control freak and can't imagine entrusting my arrangements to someone else, but I'll give it a shot.

I recently received an invite to sign up for Platinum, but no such 25k offer....any recommendations on how I could go about getting it? Is there a special reference code or phone #? Thanks!

I didn't notice a special code or anything else. It was, however, the third solicitation I received within the past two months or so, and I ignored the previous two. My suspicion is that the 25k offer was a last gasp enticement. Of course, it worked.

How long do you have to keep the Plat card to be able to hold on to the MR points....?
