Is $45 worth 4200 starpoints. I will be staying at Sheraton Roma using points. I have two options.

1. 7000 points/night for 4 nights = 28000 points + $0
or
2. 2800 points/night for 4 night = 11200 points+ $180 (total)

Which one would you go for?

Well, it depends on how many points you have and what other plans you have for them. Basically, to get 16,800 points (the difference between the two awards,) would take stays worth about $2,000, of course if you are PLT, with the PLT bonus and even less if you are on a promo. Still, I usually get about 650 points per $59 stay, so at that rate, $180 would get you about 2000 points plus maybe some bonuses.

I value Starpoints at between 2 and 3 cents each (based on the redemption value I can get for them).

So, you are spending $45/night to save at least $84/night worth of Starpoints (4200 times .02).

Seems like a good deal to me.

By the way, what is the cheapest available room rate at the hotel on the nights you want?

Cheapest available at Sheraton Roma was 200 Euros. I have enough points for my stay in Rome and Venice, but just wondering if I should save some by using C+P award. I have earned most of my points using my Amex Card.

200 Euros = roughly $240 USD. Even at 7,000 points per night, you are getting a value of more than 3 cents per Starpoint. The C&P award is an even better deal. I would go for it and save some of the hoard of Starpoints for future redemption.
