American Express Membership Rewards - Have 250,000+ points not worth anything at AMEX any ideas

One caveat I heard that dinners might be giving Amex a run this year for members and this might be the need for Amex to give something of value.

Barring that, any suggestions on how to switch these points to something more valuable. I don't need airmiles unless it was a great deal like 25% bonus. Could use hotel points, cruises, any ideas?

Regards,
Robert

I just received something from Amex regarding transferring AMEX MRs into SPG points (or whatever they are called). Unfortunately I just shredded and tossed the paper yesterday or else I would give you the exact wording. But it involved a bonus of some kind, either a 25% or 50% bonus when transferring or using Amex to SPG.

Hope that helps ya.

If not, you could always just buy a lot of Gift Cards and use them as gifts. I like gifts. :D ;)

I have never done the program where they let you choose your own reward, but maybe that is worth looking into.

I believe the program is called "Your Reward." They book flights/rooms like a travel agent (no blackouts, etc.) and price it out for you in MR points. I priced a coach roundtrip from Boston to Manchester England a couple of months ago for August on AA, it was 65,000 points plus $75 to join "Your Reward." Considering you can't convert MR to AA and no award seats were open through AA, I didn't think it was a bad deal.

You can always transfer them through HA for 500K+ Hilton points.

You can move them to Delta and then for double the amount of miles you can fly on what Delta calls Sky Choice which is any flight or class of service if they have a seat to sell. No blackouts or inventory limits other than a seat to sell. I did europe this summer using double miles last minute for a party of five.

Holy Moley. That burned a few points. Did you book before or after the "point" price increases for business class tickets in March?

250,000 points? You can have (2) FREE, round-trip, international, First Class tickets on Air France, via Delta, and have 50,000 points left over.

Since ANA is a *A member:
2 First Class awards via ANA on UA or ANZ between US and NZ/OZ.
2 First Class awards via ANA on LH, UA, or others between US and Europe

A Space Adventures award using US miles.

A 25% bonus promotion for t/f'ing point to CO ended 7/15 (see other thread in this forum). There may have been a maximum for bonus. Don't know if others are forthcoming, although it seems like there have been frequent 15% bonus offers for transferring miles to Delta this year.

Move half of them to Southwest. That will get you 100 points, good for 6 free tickets and change, plus the 100 allows you to get a companion pass for your significant other, who can then fly for free along with you, even if you're on a free ticket. Almost like getting 12 free tickets at a maximum. Trouble is, you have to use them within a year, and you have to fly Southwest. But as service on the majors has gone downhill, and they've dropped a lot of first class seats, Southwest isn't as bad, relatively speaking, as it used to be.

I just used 200000 for 2 first class Virgin air tickets (80000 each) and then burned the other 40000 (10000x4) for 4 limo (actually sedan) rides.
Worth it for San Diego to LAX, not so much in London, but what the heck.

Those tickets would have cost $$$$. Send them to me!

How far in advance did you have to book your Virgin UC rewards? I'm looking to book Virgin UC rewards with MR points for LGW/MCO return later this year, but don't have dates yet and am worried about not being able to get reward availability.

Thanks,
Susan

One of the best value of AMEX points is to transfer to Marriott. 235,000 points get you 120,000 miles (on many airlines, include AA and UA) plus 7 nights hotel. But you have do it quick. I believe AEMX is ending the transfer by the end of this year.
If you go AMEX- HA- Hilton, you will get the 500,000 Hilton points. You can use 250,000 points to spend 6 nights at Kenya Safari or 350,000 points to spend 7 nights to visit Cairo and Luxor (the one in Egypt, not Las Vegas). There is also a package using 500,000 points to spend 4 nights at Cyprus than cruise 3 days to Egypt. It's quite a treat.

2 Free First Class on ANA from US to OZ...I take it thru NRT with a stopover, all for 200,000 AMEX points?

I like the 2:1 into SPG, so 250,000 MRs = 125,000 SPG's, which is a nice vacation at a category 5/6!

1 FC ticket on ANZ from US to OZ using ANA miles is 120,000. (2 would be 240,000). I don't know what doing it on ANA metal with a stopover in NRT would cost, but I think it would be more.

Why not get $2500 worth of gift cards. You'd be shopping free for a while. Keep your cruises and miles ... give me some real money!

I would take the $20,000+ in free airfare before I would take the gift cards.
