 I've had the Plat. Amex for over a year & everytime I call there is an annoying beeping in the background.
Is this standard for all calls to Amex. Or am I on the watch list @ Amex? My account has been current every month since I rec'd the card?
Side note: Amex sent me a mail gram asking to call regarding some recent charges. I made several phone toll calls & charged to the Amex. So I called & there's that beep again.
Look forward to your ...beep...responses.

Beep means it's recording the call
to help improve customer service, no doubt.
Annoying. Just like when you call AMEX and you have to punch in your account number just to listen to the voicemail options. Then when you get a customer service rep they ask you for your account number all over again.

RitaLots of companies seem to have moronic systems like this.
As far as the beeps are concerned, this is a relatively new thing. I don't call Amex too often but the beep wasn't there a year or so ago.

I agree. That's why I just skip the system and go straight to the rep. The beep has been there since at least last summer, I remember asking about it. The agent jokingly indicated the call was being recorded, she wasn't sure. It is annoying.

It just started here in Singapore - wasn't there a week ago. Irritating.

It is against federal law for any phone conversation to be recorded without both parties knowing. Exceptions are for criminal investigations.
In order for you to explicitly acknowledge that the phone conversation is being recorded, the company must do one of two things: tell you specifically before the conversation begins that the phone call is being recorded, or play a beeping sound every fifteen seconds (some small set time interval).
I believe federal law only requires one party to consent to taping a telephone conversation. State laws, however, may require both parties to consent.

There is a US law that requires you to make the beeping sound if recording. I recall this from years ago, but I don't know if it has changed or been superceded by state laws.
