Hi,

This is my second trip report. I will post text live - being in Scottsdale now -; photos and updates will follow later.

 I hope you will enjoy it. :)

I am having a great time.

Sunday, 18 July 2004

I am typing this with a view from the 54th floor of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in New York to the Chrysler and Empire State building. The corner room 5420 is just perfect for me, it is not huge, but the interior is very nice and the in-room technology very advanced. From the bathroom one has a great view through the window next to the tub. Two Samsung flat-screen TVs are in the room, three phones, the housekeeping service did set up the room beautifully for both night and day. Yesterdays flight to NYC on Singapore Airlines was awesome as well. Great food, champagne, a very comfortable Skysuite, and the Krisworld entertainment keeps you busy for hours. I wish the flight had been longer than the 8 hours 15 minutes.

Departure at 0835 from FRA, Arrival at JFK at 1050 – local times of course.

Unfortunately my bag came out almost last and I had to wait for my arranged transportation because I was late coming from the baggage claim, so I missed a meeting for Lunch with “Catman”. In the evening I dined with 5 nice Flyertalk members at La Rosa Mexicana, which is just 2 blocks from the Mandarin Oriental.

This morning it is clouded, foggy and I even see light rain through the windows. I hope the weather gets better by the time I am finished with breakfast. An commercial air-travel related book from a very friendly Bostonian Lady arrived here at the hotel. Thanks for that. Overall I can be very grateful for what I experienced so far.

Monday, 19 July 2004

Breakfast at the famed Asiate Restaurant was good albeit the choices were rather expensive, even for 5 Diamond properties. I took the All American breakfast which was good and enough. Then I headed to the very busy Concierge to talk about what I should do for sightseeing. Of course the Metropolitan Museum of Art is the first museum to take a look at in NYC. I walk about 20 blocks up north and then see that the Metropolitan museum is closed. Great advice from the Concierge, who also told me to go to the Guggenheim Museum which is open on Mondays – thankfully. From there I proceeded down Fifth Avenue down until the 33rd street. A long walk but there is plenty to see. Many famous shops and hotels. I did go inside the Peninsula which looked rather unimpressive compared with the MO at Time Warner Center. From the 33rd Street I walked up the Broadway and I did buy a new Ralph Lauren dress shirt at Macy’s, a rather horrible shopping complex. I grabbed a slice of pizza at an Italian Restaurant on the way up to the 60th street where the Columbus Circle is. Afterwards I did use the fitness and swimming facilities on the 36th floor which feature state-of-the-art equipment and were empty. I was the only guests on the whole floor for more than an hour I would guess. The Spa person present even gave me some “toys” to play with in the pool like a noodle, a swimming platform and he offered some goggles. I really didn’t need it but the attentiveness of this young gentlemen was outstanding. Then I wanted to get a brochure from the sales office of the MO Residence and there I was told, no only with an appointment you will get any information about the apartments which are sold here. There were three persons just standing behind the reception area of the sales office doing nothing and they weren’t willing to give me a brochure. This sales office has nothing to do with the hotel which is a separate entity. I am distracted by the awesome view of Midtown Manhattan at night I have to add. The lights, the buildings and the movement of people in the adjacent tower is diverting my attention. I noticed that the TVs are on in almost every apartment that is lighted and that I can look into. What a view of the busy Big Apple. I will return to this place, already looking forward to my return now that I face tomorrows departure.

Tuesday, 20 July 2004

After another full American breakfast at Asiate I walked through Central Park to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The sculptures and the modern art wasn’t fascinating, but the classic paintings have a spectacular aura. I loved the Monet, Cezanne and especially Paul Signac’s “Port de Marseille” paintings, the weather is good today, it is rather hot at 89 degrees Fahrenheit. A scenic boat tour I did not pursue because it takes too long. I will have my complimentary lunch at Asiate in an hour, after that I will relax a little more at the pool and enjoy the skyline views from the South Tower of the Time Warner Center. Then I have to pack my bags and take the Shuttle back to the airport. I will stay at the Holiday Inn JFK because my flight tomorrow leaves fairly early and this hotel will be just a fourth of the cost of the Mandarin Oriental.

Thursday, 22 July 2004

At JFK check-in was quick and efficient, I got the seats reserved, headed airside, upstairs to the RCC where I was pleasantly surprised when the check-in agent directed me to the International First Class Lounge although I just had a Y cabin BP for JFK-IAD. The Lounge was small, dark, but well stocked with respect to food (like a continental breakfast plus sweets, chocolate, etc.) and drinks (Moet & Chandon, Minute Made, etc.). Lots of newspapers and golf magazines made the 90 minutes I had to spend there pass quickly, the flight to IAD departed late because, arrival at IAD had to be postponed due to severe traffic at IAD according to the captain. At IAD, the worst airport I have seen in my life in the U.S. and Canada, I had to take a shuttle from the T to the D terminal. After that I took a long walk to the C7 RCC which is the one where the lounge area is downstairs. The warden looked at my BP, which did not show my Star Gold status, and said, only Int. F or C class, not domestic, I told her the ticket was International and showed her my Senator Card, she then said, we are so packed, go the the RCC near your gate, which she noticed on the BP. The D8 RCC which was closest to my D3 departure gate was closed though when I arrived there. This warden seemed to dislike me. Anyway, there were just 20 minutes to boarding so I waited at the gate. When boarding began I stood in the line in 3rd position and a 65 year old man behind me told me to get to the back of the line because he was entitled to board first with his C boarding pass and since he was a 100000 mile flyer. The “important customers” can board first, he reminded me. Then I showed him my F class BP and he saw that I was in seat 1A. Gladly the UA 947 flight had the First Suite installed. Departure was delayed by 50 minutes due to a traffic jam pre-takeoff, because there were 15 planes in front of us the get airborne. Once finally in the air I reclined and was offered a drink. I asked for champagne, and was told there is no champagne at all on the plane, ridiculous for an evening flight of 5+ hours. For Dinner I took pasta with shrimps which was cold and the parmesan cheese that was listed on the menu was missing. Then with the Ice-Cream I wanted a hot or cold chocolate, not available of course. Pathetic. The captain took a southern “sunshine route to LAX”, he was pleasant and we arrived on time because the head wind barely existed going westbound this time. I watched the comedy “Along came Polly” which I enjoyed. I also slept 90 minutes, the F suite is comfortable but not wide enough. Overall UA’s service effort was bad. The FA’s chatted most of the time in the galley and they were so loud laughing that they actually woke me up. My suitcase came out late and I took the shuttle to the airport Hilton. Upgrade granted to tower’s room with club lounge access. Now I will take the hotels shuttle to Manhattan Beach and will meet with another famed Fter named Skiadcock there. The Seafood Pasta at the Beaches restaurant was good but a whole lot too much to eat at lunch. This afternoon I will then fly on UA Express/Skylink to PHX to go to the Westin Kierland Villas.

Friday, 23 July 2004

My flight to PHX from LAX was delayed about an hour due to aircraft availability but in the RCC at LAX near gate 70 I met two wonderful people whose flights were delayed as well and we chatted a long time about divergent topics from business, politics, travel and other genres. Once on the CR 700 jet I settled in seat 1A. All six persons in F class were wonderfully nice and the one female FA did a great job joking around with us although she had a horribly long day serving UA Express customers on six short haul jumps on that day. But she works four days about 16 hours and then has 16 days off. We got no car upgrade at Avis, drove to the Westin Kierland Villas which took us about 30 minutes from the Avis lot at PHX. Once there the service wasn’t great but we received a very nice villa (number 1303, highest floor possible with a very nice view over the pool area and palm court, golf course). But then we recognized there was no table on the balcony although all other balconies have table at which one could enjoy a nice breakfast. We ask front desk and concierge and are told to wait until tomorrow. Now this morning we are told that the Villas are fully booked and there is no spare table. We are just out of luck. Then we attend the Timeshare presentation with a nice guy named Chris for 10000 Starpoints. I know all about the system and impress him more than the other way around. Then I tell him about the table issue, he promises to handle it and we ask once more at the front desk. They cannot help. Although there are plenty of tables in the pool area and at the outdoor lounge area which we would take as well. A balcony without a table just sucks, especially when the weather is great. Chris could not deliver his promise though. I just got a call that we will not get a table. I know it is not a big deal for three more days here before heading for the Four Seasons Scottsdale where such an issue never exists anyway. We got another desperate offer from Starwood Vacation ownership for our money. Basically “preserve the deal available now for the VO Villa which is deeded for life for 30000 US$ and get 50000 incentive Starpoints right away for 1595 $. I think we should accept the offer just for the points, but my parents disagree. Still thinking. The housekeeping is not good, my sheet on my bed had a hole in it which is anything but “Heavanly”, bath amenties are limited to one for the three of us and asking for more we just got one more set. I don’t mind because I have a few better quality ones with me from the Mandarin Spa which sold me a nice set of Aromatherapy products (full 200ml bottles) for just 39 $. The Hermes products at the Mandarin Oriental Hongkong will be even better, already I am looking forward to staying there. The golf course is nothing to write home about which is here at the Westin Kierland, tomorrow we will play a much nicer track at Sedona (www.sevencanyons.com) – it is going to be wonderful in the Oak Creek Canyon.

Sunday, 25 July 2004

Our excursion to Sedona was wonderful. We were treated like royalty on our complementary day visit to the spectacularly beautiful Seven Canyons private golf community. I would love to be an owner there, it is just so beautiful, the service was impeccable, free snacks, drinks, cold towels everywhere. Titleist Pro V1 Practice balls, good food in the restaurant and one of America’s 10 best private golf courses. Great views from pristine fairways and greens. A peaceful world apart from urban hustle and bustle. The 1 hour 40 minute drive home from Sedona to Scottsdale was fairly pleasant because cruising at 80 miles per hour in a 300hp Cadillac DeVille is very comfortable. We arrived just before midnight because we chatted with two very friendly couples who we hopefully will meet again in Scottsdale.
This morning we had breakfast in our villa, called a few friends in Germany and wished the 2002 German Amateur Golf Champion all the best for his 21st birthday. Tomorrow we will play at Troon North’s Pinnacle course and we will move over to the adjacent Four Seasons Scottsdale resort.

Tuesday, 27 July 2004

My two rounds at Troon North’s Pinnacle course, a Tom Weiskopf Masterpiece, were outstanding: 72, 71, one under Par aggregate score after 36 holes of the pro tips. Service at the Four Seasons is very friendly and efficient, we were able to get a better room after going back to the reception because we were not content with a dark room assigned to us. Room 1413 and also room 1414 are nice, facing the pool area and some mountains. Breakfast is a disgrace at the given prices though. Both dinner at Café Isabelle in North Scottsdale and lunch at the Troon North clubhouse were good, but at the clubhouse they charge a fixed 20% tip which I find steep and there is no way to choose the tip amount yourself without the hassle of getting a second bill and explaining the reasons to the waiters. I prefer a “tip at personal discretion” with a 15% suggestion in mind. Sadly there is only a la carte breakfast and no buffet. We will play very early tomorrow morning once more with Will Rice, who joined us on Monday morning as well. He hits a good ball but does not even come close to my pure ball striking. The Cadillac we rented from Avis needs an oil change, we just hate being given cars that need service. I’ll leave it with that statement. The holidays are overall very nice, both relaxing and challenging, and I am glad for that fact. Unfortunately time is limited, therefore please excuse my short daily reviews.

Wednesday, 28 July 2004

The Monument course has a rock on the 3rd fairway, a monument on the courses signature hole. I lost two balls left of the fairway in the desert on the back nine and shot 36-39=75 on this Par 72 course which had airified greens on the front nine and fairways that were not the quality of the Pinnacle ones. Nevertheless we enjoyed one more good round with Will Rice who shot a great 81 finishing with 6 straight pars on the last 6 holes. My parents did not play well, striking the ball of the muddy fairways was fairly difficult. The sun is shining and it will reach 108 degrees Fahrenheit today. Luckily the air condition is working properly here. Tomorrow we will play no golf but rather relax and hike up Pinnacle Peak which we can view from our room across the Estancia Private Golf Community.

Continuation of the report:

Wednesday, 28 July 2004

... Tomorrow we will play no golf but rather relax and hike up Pinnacle Peak which we can view from our room across the Estancia Private Golf Community.

Saturday, 31 July 2004

Yesterdays round at Grayhawk golf club, the famed home course of Masters Champion Phil Mickelson, on the Raptor course was so disappointing that we decided to cancel our tee-time for today on the Talon course. The courses at Grayhawk were in bad shape, burned fairways and greens that varied in speed, and it is a track through a residential area without much of a view. Troon North is a lot better golfing community in my opinion. Instead of our round today we hiked up Pinnacle Peak early in the morning, there were at least 100 other wannabe mountaineers on the path around the hill. The views of the valley were great, I took some nice pictures of the private courses called Estancia as well as Desert Highlands. A person we met at Seven Canyons is very fortunate to be a member at both courses to say the least. Tonight we will eat at an Italian restaurant, I would prefer a pizza. Tomorrow we will have to pack and get ready for our departure to Cabo San Lucas. On Monday we will make a one day stop at Los Angeles and drive to the Four Seasons Aviara and Rancho Santa Fe Estate to take a closer look at the FS residence club and the Tiger/Kuehne – Mickelson/daily golf match at Phil’s other home course: The Bridges at Rancho Santa Fe.

Tuesday, 03 August 2004

First of all I will report about two unimaginable bad stays at Sheraton Airport hotels:

Sheraton PHX at Tempe: Piece of Sh*t. No bell-staff to help with bags, check-in guy was friendly but lied about the breakfast at the club lounge which was closed during our entire stay. No vouchers given out. And although the stay was prepaid we saw an additional room charge of 109 $ on our bill consuming nothing at a hotel I will never see again!

Actually we were probably charged an incorrect amount on our credit card. I will contact Starwood after this trip with all my complaints. Internet service here in Los Cabos (Right now!) is too bad to do my banking activities.

Then we stayed at the Sheraton Gateway LAX.

- Airport pickup took 1 hour, buses from all other hotels passed by us and another waiting family about 10 times.
- Club lounge closed on Monday – bad luck again
- Cue at check-in, nobody there to take care of Platinum Preferred Guest at SPG check-in.
- No upgrade, same as at PHX.
- Took room service one hour to deliver a knife to open a TSA screened bag, thus we had restricted access to our luggage.
- Called front desk and I am asked to hold for a moment. After holding for 30 !!! minutes I hung up because I was so frustrated. I ask the operator for the concierge to find out about my flight departure time and it takes him an hour to get the correct answer from the Mexicana Airline.
- Breakfast ok in club lounge, service awful in the whole hotel, airport shuttle not leaving every 15 minutes.

Then we have to wait 30 minutes in a cue to check in for MX 939 LAX-SJD. Bags must be carried by ourselves to TSA screening, another 30 minutes in cue with all 6 bags. Then we are asked to move to a different line almost 50 yards away without help crushing thru the masses at LAX with 60 50+lbs bags. TSA checks bags in front of our eyes carefully. Finally put on belt to the plane. We make it just in time to the plane after two horrible hours at LAX being treated like cattle. MX – never again. I am glad they are no longer in Star Alliance, what a shame, this airline.

Arrival on time and bags came out earlier than we made it thru immigration. I find it ridiculous that a country like Mexico whose inhabitants flee to the US have such strict immigration procedures and forms. It is not a country where I would want to stay longer than 14 days. Avis staff is friend though we get no upgrade but rather have to pay 650$ for a Dodge Stratus for 11 days, for that much we got a Cadillac DeVille V8 in PHX for the same amount of time. We drive to the hotel, our luggage is brought by an Avis guy for 20$. Finally we are lucky:

An upgrade to a gorgeous duplex ocean view two-bedroom suite with Jacuzzi. One of the nicest rooms I have seen so far – I like the architecture, the colours and the design of the whole hotel property. Very recommendable, service ok so far, just the mini-bar fridge is not working and the air-condition is loud. We drove to town for dinner at the Tower restaurant which is a total rip-off: 25$ for 4 king-prawns. View of Los Cabos yacht harbour is nice. Lots of people in Los Cabos around the town center and the harbour, Mediterranean flair and prices. Portofino and Puerto Banus are a lot closer for us. But we are here to play golf, enjoy the pool area and beach. We saw the Vision of the Seas, a Royal Caribbean ship passing by today. Great view from balcony and pool area. Nice courtyard of the hotel, very well maintained. Tomorrow we will play the Cabo Del Sol Desert Course, one of the worlds top 100 courses. Temperature about 100 degrees Fahrenheit, medium humidity, pool almost too warm.

Wednesday, 04 August 2004

We had a wonderful round of golf on the Desert course at Cabo Del Sol. It took us only 3h 30 minutes and I shot a 1 over Par 73 with 3 Birdies and four Bogeys which were results of dumb course management and bad execution of shots to the green. Good weather. After the round I walked on the beach to the holes on the ocean of the properties Ocean Course which took me 30 minutes until I returned to my room. Then I checked out the gym which is complementary for Gold and Platinum Preferred Guests but otherwise costs 11 dollars per visit. Tomorrow we will play the Arroyo and Mountain nines of the Palmilla resort which surrounds the One & Only hotel. The Ocean nine there is closed – like the Ocean course at Cabo Del Sol – for maintenance. Courses undergo major renovations taking three months here.

Thursday, 05 August 2004

Palmilla Golf is located in the canyons about 3 miles from the beach. It was a lot hotter than on the other course and also than at our hotel. The course is a canyon layout, fairways are ok, but there are too many bunkers and I had a bad day being in the sand 14 times. Greens were not letting to ball roll on an obvious line. Deceptive Greens made me make 4 three putts and shoot a 78. The par threes are all over 200 yards, three of the four are over 220 yards. I am proud that I hit the ball on every green on the “short” holes. Day off tomorrow. We will try to see Cabo’s famous arch and lighthouse.

Saturday, 07 August 2004

I just witnessed on TV how Andre Agassi beat Andy Roddick 7:5 6:7 7:6 at Cincinnati in an epic match. Both players showed their best tennis, Agassi was amazing. My 76 at the Desert Course at Cabo Del Sol was not as spectacular but it was acceptable. Somehow my putting was off. The staff at the Sheraton here is not able to communicate in English on a level which is necessary in the hospitality business. The skill level of English I expect is not high, but what I hear here and the words (simple prepositions like “within”) that are not understood is hardly imaginable. Then there is the elevator next to my bedroom which is loud and prevents me from sleeping in the early morning hours. When I recently asked for new towels I was told “no”. When I asked for a second beach towel I got another “no”. Not even a friendly excuse. Here you have to give away a towel-card in exchange for a towel to be used at the pool. They must have big towel-theft problems here. Tomorrow we will change to the Westin Los Cabos, the Grand-Canyon coloured oceanfront arch.

Sunday, 08 August 2004

The courteous and efficient front desk staff followed my upgrade request and we were given a wonderful partial ocean view deluxe suite with Jacuzzi on the balcony and at least 80 m2 of living space. All marble floors, great bath, bed, TV, etc. Just the internet connection for 20 $ per day plus tax is IMO outrageously expensive. The Royal Beach Club Lounge on the third floor is closed. But instead Platinum SPG members get buffet breakfast and drinks and snacks from 5-7pm. An acceptable replacement for a lounge I would have loved to see. Food and drink selection was good. Valet parking is free as far as I have heard and it was free at the Sheraton as well. Overall the Westin Regina is a stunning hotel in a location which is like desert hills on the beach. Air-conditioning is very loud, the lock of the balcony did not work but we sorted it out because it is necessary on the ground floor.

Internet service from my room in the Westin Regina is too bad to do online banking and sign up for my university courses. This costs me real effort, time and money. I always see:

The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.

And my browser is configured perfectly!

Service at Mexican Starwoods: Two examples (which I intend to send to Starwood headquarters):

The door to the balcony cannot be closed and we are in a ground floor suite in Mexico. I call the “service express” (ironic name, because everything takes ages here! The clock caused the staff to be late, I guess!) and am told how to close it, I already did make the right moves trying to lock the door, the lock is just stuck, not moving, I am told somebody will come by. Three hours, nobody comes, I walk up to the front desk, finally someone comes within an hour. The person can’t help. Door open overnight and always when we are away for food, sports, etc. Computer and gadgets in room, safe too small. Door still open. Day two, 3 calls, nobody helps, no secure lock on the easily accessible balcony caused my mother not to sleep well. Now, after two days someone comes and tells us he will have to come back to install a new lock. Hope this helps, 36 hours, 4 calls, two visits to the front desk to close the balcony door. New world record!!!

Then the slow internet access. 20$/day, hotel obviously has network problems, but does not tell me when I asked yesterday for a stable and relatively quick 256kb connection in the room for my 2AM business – banking, FX, signup for my new University courses. Connection is ok for two minutes, then two minutes off again. I ask the lady in the business center, she can’t help, tells me it will be better during the night, well, it was even worse, I could not do what was necessary. I ask the Service Express for help, am told to contact the business center, I call the bc, nobody there, then walk over, bc empty, I call the Service Express again, am told to wait for a computer expert to call me. I am called within 10 minutes and am told to delete my cookies, this doesn’t help, the expert says, it must be my computer not the connection. My IBM T40 worked flawless for a year now! I wait 2 hours in the room instead of going to the pool, no call, no expert in my suite as promised. Boy this service sucks. Connection is now, after 20 hours still the same, although I also complained at the front desk. I am not even able to check my e-mail properly, being not able to send and receive data, although everything is connected, every 3 minutes for about 3 minutes. Back at the front desk now I am told about minor network problems, which actually caused me to loose money on the markets. At least I could have conserved more in the downward spiral of the DAX. Awful connection, my laptop always works great at the Four Seasons 10$/day connections!

Furthermore the access to the Fitness Center here is 10$ per person per day, regardless of SPG level and room booked, every guest has to pay. Well, at the Sheraton Hacienda we did not have to pay due to our SPG Platinum status. On the other hand they make up for the closed Royal Beach club with free Buffet breakfast and pre-dinner drinks, at least something.

Tomorrow we will play the El Dorado golf course, on the adjacent property (further west in direction of Los Cabos), where George W. Bush played when he also stayed here during an important (G8?) economic summit.

The course was definitely worth playing. 6 oceanfront holes were as spectacular as those at Pebble, Kiawah or Bandon. The condition was fine for the summer. 12 desert styles holes were tugged into canyons with three artificial lakes making a delightful contrast to the dry surroundings. I shot 3 over Par 75 on a course with 5 Par 5 and 5 Par 3 holes, four of them over 200 yards and all requiring a carry all the way onto the green. There is a shuttle service to the El Dorado and Cabo Real courses from the Westin.

Sunday, August 15, 2004

-Los Cabos Airport was a mess – MX 938 SJD-LAX on time, nothing fancy
-Westin bill was 150$ too high, taken off quickly, check-out was efficient.
-The car was costly at 730 $ for a small Dodge Stratus for 11 days.
-Sheraton LAX upgraded us to a nice Corner Suite 1576. Great 900 Sq. Ft. room
-Lounge had decent continental breakfast
-Now I watch the final round of the PGA Championship

Wednesday, August 18, 2004

Flights UA 996 and SQ1 were both very good, but of course no comparison. I met very friendly JP Morgan employee Kevin Clare on UA 996 LAX-SFO which is his weekly commute. SQ1 is Singapore Airlines premium route, Suite 1B was great for 8 hours sleep and 5 hours of good entertainment and fine dining. Lots of lobster. First Class disembarked first, then the curtains were opened for Raffles Class. First class bags came out first, the Raffles then economy class bags. What a great distinction of class this airline manages to maintain. Was met by MO man at the MO hotel counter, shuttle “Hotel Link” bus was waiting, departed with just three passengers on board, a bus that could seat at least 50. 40 minutes to the hotel. Early check-in granted into Connought Suite 2126 Corner Harbour front suite. Club suite 2110 has a better view east to Statue Square and the Bank of China and Citigroup Buildings. I face North across Victoria harbour and west to the new Four Seasons Tower. Salisbury Gradens, Museums, Intercontinental, Sheraton and Peninsula Hotels are right across the Harbour. Can almost peek into the rooms with the courtesy binoculars. Went to the Hang Hin Mansion Hankow road 38 to meet my tailor Sandy Cheng, a real professional 5 minutes north of Pen hotel. I will get two suits done in the 4 days I am here. Today was the second fitting. Tomorrow is the third. First afternoon here I went up Victoria peak with the tram and was astonished about the commercial shopping center on top of the peak. Unfortunately there was so much smog the last two days here I could not make really nice pictures. 30/85 degrees and 90 percent humidity, at least, feels hot and wet. Pool at the MO, HK’s only hotel with balconies on all rooms, is very refreshing. In the evening I attended a birthday party of Sean and Graeme, two very nice gentlemen, from Britain, working here. They hosted their party at the Crow’s Nest, a restaurant / bar establishment on D’Aguilar road, where all the multinational bars are and lots of folks hang out after work. Nice mix of people from all over the world at the festivities. Got back to my room at 2245, woken up by a call from my parents at 0630. Then got up at 0910 and had breakfast at the Mandarin grill until almost 11 o’clock. Best breakfast buffet since I was in the Beau-Rivage Palace in Lausanne – maybe my best breakfast ever – poached eggs on toast with bacon, all fruits, juices, bakery products one can imagine and a great European selection of hams and cheese. Wonderful preparation, nice aquariums and fish in the restaurant. Then I went off again to Kowloon (pronounce in German: Kaulun) to my tailor. Tonight is a run up and around Victoria peak with Rupert Chamberlain, KPMG Director, scheduled. I hope I am fit enough to run 1h 30 minutes. I need to get water, a torch and a backpack.

Thursday, August 19, 2004

The run with the fading light of a bad torch was very dangerous but I survived the adventure. Quite an experience to be down at the lower Aberdeen Reservoir at night without light and hard to find back to the right side of the hill. My last night at the Oriental was great, the Breakfast at the Mandarin Grill spectacular once more and the at 1 I asked the MO Concierge to call the Pen to ask about the hotels check-in time, and I was told 2pm which is also stated in the Peninsula guide here on my room. I arrive at 2:10 and am told my room will be ready in 20 minutes, a lie, after twenty minutes I was asked to wait another 40 minutes, had to wait a total of an hour and was told, no late check-out granted, although the Amex Cent. Package includes it. At least afternoon tea and breakfast are included. When I reserved the room I thought I had reserved a Deluxe Harbor View room. Well, there was none available at check-in and I was given a Kowloon View room in the Tower which has a horrible view, well, I am so spoiled. I keep the shades closed. So no Amex FHR/Centurion upgrade, rather a downgrade, no late check-out, late check-in. I will ask for the manager tomorrow. My two small bags took 15 minutes to get up to my room, I should have insisted to carry them myself. Mandarin Oriental staff was friendlier in my opinion. The famous afternoon tea is overrun, crowded with people on cell-phones, in army shorts and tank tops, of course this group of folks make up only 5 percent, but they create an image that is not in congruence with my expectation of the Peninsula Hongkong. Gladly my new friend Peter from Amsterdam got the right room. He is a great new Flyertalk member. We saw a good laser/light show from his room 2409. I have 1801 which is facing the other side, strange since we both have odd numbers. Actually my room is next to the elevator which is not loud at all. The pool and gym at the Pen have a fantastic pool, Felix is an overpriced bar/restaurant with the best view in town. I guess that is what you pay for. I keep my large bags at the MO and just went across the harbor on the Star Ferry. Tomorrow I will get back over and take the MO limousine which is only 1/5th the price of the Pen's Rolls-Royce back to the airport from where I will fly to Singapore and then the day after to Jakarta.

All I can write is that South-East Asia is strikingly beautiful, different, intriguing, full of nice people and some who want to screw you. After Jakarta I was in Bangkok where I met both my old school-friend Uschi who is on her way to Denpasar for her studies and a very successful businessman called Larry from Denver. Bangkok’s Grand and Royal Palace, the Wat Arun, the Chao Praya River, the Oriental Hotel, the night market, the food, the dining style without shoes on, this is all overwhelming. I loved it and will definitely return. The same is valid for Singapore. So different from BKK, yet also very appealing, especially to the law-and-order loving German I am. I am blessed to have met Professor Konstantinos Stergiopolous in the Ritz Carlton Club. He is my newest friend and I am in for a free consultation on Bintan at the Banyan Tree where he will invite me to. I am looking forward to seeing him there tomorrow evening. Prof. Stergiololous always stays in Suite 3106 at the Ritz Carlton Millenia and at the Jim Thompson Suite at the Oriental. Great choices. I hope the Sea-Front Jacuzzi Villa is equally appealing to us. Yesterdays dinner at Senso, Singapore’s best Italian restaurant was stunning and expensive due to his Barolo from 1997 which alone cost 248 SGD. Food was another 500 SGD for our party. Afterwards we went up to the New Asia Bar in the Swisshotel. Floor 72, but the view from the Ritz Carlton across the Marina is better. Unfortunately I was not able to call Mathis Wilke in the evening, I regret it. We spent a wonderful day sight-seeing thru Singapore’s different districts. He gave me a nice tour. Due to tropical downpour we were not able to take advantage of the Botanical Gardens. I will do this after the Bintan weekend when I return once more to Singapore. I apologize to Mathis herewith sincerely for not thanking and getting back to him. This morning he did not pick his cellphone up. Hopefully the Ferry tomorrow to Bintan will take everything I have with me at no charge.

Tuesday, August 31, 2004

There was a surcharge for my luggage of about 50 SGD both ways in addition to the 50 SGD ticket. Bintan is lovely, especially the beautiful Banyan Tree Resort with 74 secluded private Villas each with Jacuzzi or pool or both. Golf was not as good as the Spa, Pool, beach and wildlife in the jungle. I had four amazingly relaxing days with the Professor who enlightened me a little more about myself. I am very thankful for his generosity, advice and the pure luck it was to meet him. Now I am back in Singapore at the Ritz Carlton Millenia, the hotel with the “world’s sexiest bathrooms” and a great view of the Singapore skyline. I took a cab to the botanical gardens and saw plenty of orchids. My RTW trip ends tomorrow when I take flight SQ 326 SIN to FRA and the LH 5028 FRA to CGN. It was the best holiday of my life. No doubt, it will be a challenge to beat this amazing cornucopia of tremendous experiences. I am blessed and feel this way. Thank you very much to anyone who contributed a lot or a little to this journey.

Although I had problems with my stomach I arrived safely, because a very smart Professor helped me a lot, in FRA and later CGN where I had to wait 30 minutes to complain about my lost suitcase. I approach the only Lady dealing with 20 disgruntled LH customers and tell her the suitcase was lost, but the golfbag arrived. I ask her about any compensation for LH Senator and SQ PPS member flying in paid First Class and I get the answer, you are at home here, no compensation :td: . Will complain later to LH. Horrible, rude LH service, had to wait 30 minutes until I was first in the line, only one line, nothing for F class. Ridculous service from LH in Germany. So different from SQ. A true pleasure to fly SQ although they messed up my mileage credit. Overall this was the best educational trip/vacation I ever had.

Hope your miles get sorted soon too.

This (http://www.ritz-carlton.com/hotels/singapore/photo_tour/accommodations/butler+drawn+bath_photo+tour.asp) is why.

Good stuff, Sebastian. Makes me want to do one of those F RTWs myself :)

Singapore pictures accessible thru the link above. Rooms shown in order are 1118, 1808 (Deluxe Marina Bay View rooms) and 3106 (Presidential Suite which was occupied by my new friend from Greece). I really enjoyed my time in SIN. Great restaurants, all clean and safe, very nice city to live in.

A magazine like travel and leisure gave the RC in SIN the award for the "world's sexiest bathrooms"!

Will try to upload more images tomorrow or next weekend.

Yes, all bags arrived, although my suitcase was 22 hours late I am happy that at least nothing was missing. Customs in Germany open all bags that miss a connection. Late next week I will upload more pictures. Thanks for all your kind invitations (StarG: I loved the Dharwa... Restaurant; great atmosphere there), comments and suggestions before, during and after my trip.

flamboyant 1 thanks for the trip report and the great photos. I am just planning a SJD visit for April and was deciding bw the Sheraton and the Westin. Which would you recommend (for an SPG Gold who won't get the buffet breakfast at the Westin)?

flamboyant 1
Oct 11, 04, 5:41 am
The Sheraton is more intimate and has a warmer atmosphere, I like the Hacienda style a lot more than the spectacular red/yellow/purple Westin fortress. The Cabo Del Sol (two great golf courses) area around the Sheraton is better than the Westin which stands alone and the Beach is better at the Sheraton which is also marginally closer to Los Cabos. Stay at the Sheraton, nice jacuzzis in every room. Book oceanview or oceanfront or even pay the premium for a junior suite.

Breakfast is equally expensive, on average food at the Sheraton is similar in quality but a little cheaper.
